  • Somebody loves pentatonic scales lol

  • Did anyone else notice the bug on his amp at 2:43?

  • Maybe the least informative gear demo ever

  • @flinto2002 Watch more demos, you'll do fine.

  • Amazing, switching from 5 watts to 15 and to 30 changes the pitch of your licks. Amazing!

  • How much?

  • I can't decide - lonestar special for it's clean or Bogner Shiva EL34 for it's distortion channel. I can't afford both!

  • how would you compare the lonestar with the supersonic you had before??

    thanks in advance.

  • Turn that sucker up to 11.

  • you didnt play one chord the whole time.

  • @coolcustomer31 You couldn't possibly play a decent chord with all that reverb :) The amp is killer, this demo didn't do it justice at all.

  • What was the song at the very beginning? I love it!

  • @carlosnelson I just went to the guitar store today with my wife to look at the Mesa Boogie Express 5:25 ($1299 for the combo) and thought I'd try the Electra Dyne ($1949 for the 2x12 combo). My wife told me to get the Electra Dyne cause it sounded so good. My wife is pretty cool though.

  • Could not have said that any better, I took my wife with me to purcahse a Boogie & walked out with a Line 6 Spider Jam & feeling like shit about 3 weeks after the purchase!!!!!!!!!

  • @carlosnelson grow a pair!

  • @Mr72seventytwo Your right, I kick my ass frequently behind that decision!

  • this is one amp i am considering, the other being the matchless avalon 30, but it seems for giging this might have more user friendly options, the avalon is only one channel, thats the drawback..if i used it live i woud have to use my volume knob all the time to switch from clean to od, like they did in the 60's & 70's when multi channels were not around..any thoughts on the two amps?

  • @MOSKII58 :

I just can say that I own a mesa lonestar (not a special, but a normal one with 10/50/100 watt) myself and that I have never heard clean and crunch tones that more beautiful than those of the lonestar. And with some adequate booster like the fulldrive or a tubescreamer you can get fantastic high gain sounds.

In addition, it's a beautiful amp in my eyes (looks better than the Matchless Avalon)...so you can't go wrong with a lonestar! brilliant amp!

  • what is the song at the begginning and end?

  • are you using the output and solo function in this or is it bypassed?

  • Just out of curiosity, was everything stock ? Did you change tubes ? My lonestar doesnt sound like this. It's actually very boomy and scratchy, nothing like this.

  • At 2:45 was that an ant crawling around on his amp? At 1:39 it almost sounds like a slide! Very Cool! :)

  • hi man! great video!

how much does this combo weight?

  • @VelhosNovos 112 weighs 60lbs, or about 25kgs. The weight is no too bad, unless you are lifting it over your head. NOt as portable as a Fender PRRI, but more flexible. Great sounding amp, highly versatile. I bought one about two weeks ago.

  • @jjtenhole Really it is not too bad comparing to others Boogie´s amp. I am willing to buy this one. Thanks for replying.

  • @VelhosNovos: Well, It's not cheap, but then it's not cheaply made either. The cab is very well made, the components are all top notch, and it is assembled by hand. Some people decry the PCB board, but its very well made, and any level-headed tech will admit that a well constructed PCB board is just as good as PTP construction. I paid almost $2000(CDN) for mine, and there are a lot of PTP amps that you can buy for the same price. For me flexibility was important: 3 wattages, 2 channels.

  • @jjtenhole I have a DrZ Stangray and I love it. But I would like to have a combo because although I use the Drz Head I think it is very hard to carry head and cabinet around in my gigs. Even the combo is heavier I think it will be easier to carry it around. sorry for my english.

  • @VelhosNovos No worries on the English! 1 12 combos can be heavy, depending on what you need. If you want two good channels, with solid construction, then its going to be heavy. My Fender PRRI is only 30lbs (13kgs), but its a simple amp, and won't fit the bill in a lot of instantces. The Bad Cat, Matchless, and all those other expensive combos are really heavy too, upwards of 70lbs!! I think the Mesa LSS has a lot going for it. I don't find that there is any one amp that does it all for me.

  • @jjtenhole Thanks man! I am going to try it out and I will let you know.

  • @VelhosNovos When you check it out, be sure to play with the controls, they are very sensitive. If you're playing with single coils, the bass can be higher than if you are playing with humbuckers. Similarly, (I think) the mid range repsonds better to singles. There are a wide range of sounds that you can get out of it. Each channel and wattage selection has it's own thing going on. Players often say that they are finding new tones months after buying it. Try it first with the FX loop off.

  • @jjtenhole thanks for the clue!!!

  • Great video, btw, theres a bug on the amp at about 2:43, haha

  • @NicholasBarrios lol well spotted

  • Uhhhhh...........Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh........Uhhhhhhhhhh

    Great Amp Demo

  • too much reverb... hellooo

  • I tried it and a Rivera Venus 6. I prefer the Rivera because it offers more sond possibilities.

  • God -- this amp makes me WEEP! It sounds so F#@KING great!! I've always thought Mesa combos that weren't "Mark I-IV" have been under-appreciated. The vintage lovers avoid them thinking they're all modern, high-gain, and the boutique lovers thumb their noses at them because you can buy one at Guitar Center. But there is no way denying that Mesas are some of the best sounding amps on the planet. Thanks for the tasty demo.

  • nice playing man that amp sounds awsome im thinking bout picking up one my self :)

  • Great demo video man! Have you demoed this amp with any fender guitars? I'm just curious if you're able to get a good funky/blues fenderish tone out of this amp? Also curious if it can get to old Rush kind of gain to a tube screamer-like solo/lead tone which based on this it seems it does?

    Cheers,

    James

  • Is this a 1x12 or 2x12?

  • swiftlessons,

So it does have enough out put at 30 for shows? Thanks. . I was wondering about that. . might be even the 15 watt can play shows?

  • i'm interested in this amp. There is a used one in a local music store. anybody know any albums recorded with the lonestar?

  • @REALCougarsRmales

    Hi, try Andy Timmons

  • @REALCougarsRmales Who cares? It's a beautiful amp. Play through it, and if you like it, buy it -- what albums it's on is irrelevant.

  • @danakerman yes! In the long run thats what it boils down to. Unfortunately the amp was on reserve with another customer and I wasn't able to get it but it was mighty nice! I ended up getting an ADA preamp and a mesa blue angel instead (which needs a retube since the original owner kept his NOS tubes).

  • @REALCougarsRmales Those Blue Angels are sweet too. Nice

  • Comment removed

  • another pentatonic guy;-)

  • @William102582 its impossible you get these amps without trying blues licks !!

  • Great demo. Nicely done.

Lonestar amps are fantastic: warm and rippin'

See my channel for a live demo.

    Cheers.

  • Again, re volume on gigs. Some time back (years) I would play a one man band type show with a drum machine, backing tracks etc. I would go to the club / resturant / sports bar manager when I first set my equipment up. I was using a mixer with a master volume control. I would show the guy that was going to write my check where the master volume slider was, and tell him to put it whereever he wanted it.

That was a big hit with club mgrs, and didn't cause too many issues

    Big Ron

  • Re: Small Amps big shows. If you read the reviews of some of the groups that play big arena shows, many times only a couple of the monster stacks on stage are working, and/or they switch between them for tone changes. If you have any amp and play a really large show, there will be a sound engineer that mikes your amp so that he can control the mix of the band. At which point your amp just becomes your guitar monitor for you to hear.

    Big Ron

  • @Vermillion2176 Good info and true. Stage levels are much lower these days, its easier to hear on stage and for the singers they don't have to scream to be heard. Many big stars these days (and I'm not talking metal, but other stuff, older classic rockers that are back out on tour for example) are using much smaller amps these days. Most smaller bars, 18-22 watts is plenty and even with that I've been told to turn down my 18 watt marshall on several occasions.

  • Check out the sound of this Mesa Boogie Lonestar with Fender Strat. AWESOME!

    buildz911

  • Now what do you think about 81K views...wow! nice man..

  • ive heard this amp live and its super loud even on the 5 watt!

  • Why no chords? wtfh!

  • u still hear the strong tone of the les paul. i wouldn't test that amp with a les paul, coz it tends to take away any amp's tone with it's strong overwelmin tone. in fact, i wouldn't buy that amp to use it with a les paul, coz when u buy a lone star, it's becoz you wanna hear boogie... really great amps

  • It sounds superb.

  • what lp is that

  • studio

  • To anyone who owns this amp, does it work well with a dirty metal pedal? because the clean sounds amazing but I do like to crank to the max every once in a while ^^

  • @Maten123 Yes this amp works well with just about anything you put between your guitar and the input jack. I'm very pleased at the versatility I get from it. I use a Keeley Tube Screamer and a Robin Trower od pedal(just because i like differant sounds) great amp for blues, gospel, rock. And its very conservatively rated at 30 watts. It can get loud when you need to. Feel free to ask me anything about this amp.

  • Will the Lonestar sound warmer than the Lonestar Special?

  • They both sound very simular the only differance being the volume and an additional speaker. But I do think the Special sounds warmer and tighter. Its a great amplifier. Its really a great amp but ultimately we each have our own version of the sweet spot sound in our heads. I recommend you try both amps back to cak and compare but I believe the Special will do the job for you. Stay in touch and let me know how your progress is going.

  • I've noticed that there were quite a few complaints on Harmony Central about the Lonestar Special. Have you had any complaints? I'm thinking about getting the Special after my Electra Dyne sells on eBay.

  • Honestly I have had zero issues with this amp. Just like any company they may have a few bad units that got past final checkpoint. I believe over all this amp will fit most peoples needs.

  • can you naturally crank the sound to get distortion in the clean channel? let's say like a fender deluxe reverb????

  • hey man, nice demo with some great tone. I am currently looking into buying a lonestar but I am undecided between the classic and the special. I am skeptical to go with el84's, as one of the reasons I am buying the lonestar is for the 6l6 headroom. What are your thoughts on the el84's in your amp?

  • Some boogies are switchable between the 84s and the 6l6's. You might want to download the manual at Mesa page. I have a Mark1 and I love the tone. There all great.

  • Dear you, thank you so much for this demo and using a real microphone instead of a camera mic that clips like crazy. Thanks again.

  • WOW

  • Got one of these. Sounds amazing to play classic rock. Not for metal, needs a pedal to get metal sound but it can do anything else perfectly. Never had any quality problem with it. The 5 watts is surprisingly LOUD, you gotta hear it to believe it.

  • Also... if I may add... swiftlessons' demo showed you the difference between the 5/15/30 watt output - he should've mentioned what tubes switch in/out when going between the 3 settings which leads to the "compressor" clipping effects made more obvious when switching to the higher wattage.

This amp is a freak of nature! Will seem very complicated to the new owner. Reading the user guide is challenging. I didn't understand the amp until many months of ownership. VERY LOUD! No surprise here!

  • This is not your typical MB "crunch" amp. Lots of finesse and sweetness. Important points not clarified enough: the multi-stage outputs - they are the basic channel's master & gain controls, and the Solo stage has its own "Output" control. Combine those with the 5/15/30 watt stages makes this a "deep" amp. The "Drive" options include "Normal" "Thick" and "Thicker".

Negatives: Need xtra foot switch to control on/off of reverb. Channel switching creates a reverb cascade effect - annoying.

  • can you hook it up to turn the effects loop on or off like in my triple rec?

  • Hey toppersoppers - to answer your question, on the back of the amp, by the loop send/return jacks is a little note: "With LOOP IN, adjust SEND to match FX. Use OUTPUT for RETURN level and live volume control." This means when you step on the Solo footswitch button your Loop is "in" and live. Unfortunately, the levels you set of the Output and Solo knobs is applied to both ch 1 and 2 when you step on the Solo footswtch button. I don't use the Loop Send/Return feature. Too much effort for me.

  • This guy is a Jimi fan!

  • This is my favorite amp but my 3 favorites are mesa's, MarkV and dual recto. I've had a couple of these and never any power issues though, I've had mine for awhile..maybe it's something in the new ones. There are a handfull of big time country guitarist using these now and Kurt with Jason Aldean has even used the duals that I saw.

  • mines a classic, forgot to mention that, noticed it looked abit different, over look me, ive been battling cancer for over 8 years and been thru 4 chemos so my mind isnt what it used to be, sorry.

  • is this good for meta? any good metal amps?

  • So a 50W tube would be plenty for most to all situations, right?

  • 30 watts is enough for most situations actually.

  • More than enough. All tube is a lot different from a ss amp. WAY louder

  • I heard that tubes are louder then solid state amps, is that true?

Like if you had a 100W tube and a 100W solid the tube would be louder.

    Is this true?

  • That's absolutely true, CrazyLongboard.

  • Yes, that is true!

  • In my experience, yes. I have a 100w tube amp, and before I had a 100w Solidstate. If I put my tube amp's volume on 2 (outta 10) it was already louder than the SS amp cranked.

  • that's a great amp!Really great sound!Did you try the lonestar classic before you buy the special?if u did, can you please tell what are the sound differences?thx

  • Look on their website for all the information you need, frapedi.

  • Well the Special only goes up to 30 watts were the Classic goes up to 100. The classic with it's 6L6's have EPIC cleans with more head room were as the EL84's still have nice cleans but start to break up earlier. Special has a smooth creamy lead channel. The Classic has a smooth lead channel as well but with floor shaking power! It's leads are deep and powerful were the Special's lead is simply nicely voiced.

  • this amp is just too amazing! the sound, the tones, the look.. supurb

  • i got a marshall 15watt amp i swaped it 4 a line6 spider i thought loads of bands use marshall so it must ave great sound minor the effects and i put a wha pedal 2 a line 6 amp what a mess i put it on marshall and wow just wat i need i would rather ave a amp were i buy my effects than ave a amp tht has nearly every think my opinion.

  • Great demo of the amp, a bit heavy on the reverb but your excellent playing showcases the tasty clean tone and the fat blues tone very nicely. My band (Myspace: Blackriverdrive) is now endorsed by 65amps so I'm selling my LSS 1x12 but it's been a great amp. I use a hotcake and BB preamp plus and get great tones with mine - hotcake does a nice AC30 style tone, and the BB for Marshall style stuff. Celestion Gold speakers are recommended for getting the very best out of these amps.

  • Surprising that this amp failed on you twice, was it the tubes or the fuse, considering you said you retubed and it failed again probably the fuse? Mesa has always been known as the most reliable brand out there. By any chance were the failures at the same venue. COuld've been a problem with the place itself, hence why a surge worked. When you say you used a surge protector, you mean you just plugged into one, and didn't plug the amp straight into the wall?

  • I went to The Guitar Center for this only to have my wife talk me out of it due to the price. Settled on a Line 6 Spider Jam that isn't bad, but it no where near a Mesa!

  • Spider instead of a boogie lonestar?!?!?! lol Poor guy!

  • Ya know, I learned a very valuable lesson in The Guitar Center that day. If you want something & you work hard for it the honest way never let no one determine your outcome!!!!!!!!!!!

  • No kidding! After owning a Line6 for a year I seriously could not stand the sound it produced so I broke down and bought a real tube amp instead of a solid state amp trying really REALLY hard to sound like a tube amp. Long story short, Traynor YCV50 + MXR 6 band EQ = WAAAAAAAY better than anything Line6 has and it was about the same price too. Seriously dude, return that spider and check out Traynor amps or any of the other low watt tube amps out there.

  • You know something, you hit it right on the head "trying to get a solid-state amp to sound like a tube amp" and that's where I f@#ked up. My wife is sitting across from while i'm typing this she goes sell the Line 6. Easier said than done although it's pratically new, I would still have to get eat some of the cost of it.

  • Heh, ya. The most important thing I've learnt about amps and guitars is that one should not try to make their gear sound like something else. If an amp likes to growl, then let it growl. If a guitar has bright pickups, then play with a bright sound. I hope I can save you some grief with this. Fortunately there is a whole wack of low watt tube amps that probably cost about as much as you paid for you Spider. I'd suggest going back to the music store and looking at what they've got.

  • @dakrushel I have the spider and agree with you

  • Eww a spider? Take it back and get a cheaper mesa or a vox.

  • I hope everybody learns a lesson from this... NEVER take your wife to the guitar shop with you!

Better yet, sell your wife if you can't afford the amp you want!

  • @tommart123 lol so true. Except Im not married yet XDD

  • Hi, where is the reverb control ?

  • Two reverb control's on the back of the amp, one for each channel and a toggle switch for 'reverb bright' or 'reverb warm'

  • The back I think...

  • it's on the back, and the reverb is the only thing that sucks about this amp.. it seems to cut out while you are playing, especially on the dirty channel -- you only hear it when you stop, even if you have it up right loud.. it also rings for a very long time, without cutting through your sound.. its useless if you ask me.. also, when you switch channels, it cuts out for about 1.5 seconds before kicking in.. besides this the amp is amazing.

  • I think is in the back

  • Thanks to everyone who has watched this video, 29,000 views is way more than I thought it would get. I think I should make a few more.

  • What a great amp! Really underrated as far as amps go.

  • totally bro :D g

    oood job

  • @swiftlessons YES! Your demos are amazing, more would be welcomed

  • @swiftlessons

nearly 86000, how does that make you feel? :D

    Great demo.

  • @swiftlessons how about 65k more haha

  • danylop: it was around 1800-2000 dollars a couple of years ago. Amp is a great amp tho, good tone, enough power. all my friends love to plug into it fer sur.

  • Great. Thanks for the demo.

  • hey dude, cool demo just wondering a few things. how well does the amp take pedals, also have you tried a regular lonestar not the special, if so whats the main sound difference. do you think its worth the money or would you recomend any other amp of this sorta vibe. cheers

  • Whats the Song in the Intro?

  • what surge protector did you buy for it?

  • The "power" problem is really a rectifier tube problem. The ones MESA uses as stock aren't too great, and they blow often. Research it on the Boogie Boards. I blew 3 rectifier tubes before I got a NOS tube, and have had no problems.

  • How do people use small amps like this at gigs, don't they need to be amplified even more some how?

  • I have one and it's LOUD. But beside that, most of the time amps get miced and the PA can do the heavy lifting.

  • Ive played a lot of places and have never needed anything louder than this. In a bar this amp offers more than enough volume. in a larger venue, its getting miced up anyway. Huge Full stacks seem to be just for show.

  • @swiftlessons Most people also have no understanding of how wattage translates to loudness, or that the loudness of an amp has more to do with the speakers than the wattage. It takes an increase in wattage of 10x just to double the volume (+10db). A 100 watt amp is only 5 or 6db louder than a 30 watt amp, given the same speakers. A 30 watt head through a 4x12 stack loaded with Vintage 30s can be WAY louder than a 50 watt head playing through a 2x12 with Greenbacks

  • @danakerman One overlooked aspect in terms of wattage (at least as far as the LoneStar is concerned) I find that the lower watt settings really effect the bass response. I've tried the LoneStar (love it) but I like how the bass response better with the higher watt settings. That's just me. Your results may vary.

  • Do you know that Tube amp have so much power a 20 watt Tube amp can kick a 60 watt Transistor amps ass tubes are very powerfull and can be used at big gigs

  • @mike1jimmypage yeh they put a mic in front of the amp and thats sent to the pa (big speakerss)

  • @mike1jimmypage i often run a 15w zenith head into a vox cab. just mic it or run line out into the system.

  • @mike1jimmypage @swiftlessons Most people also have no understanding of how wattage translates to loudness, or that the loudness of an amp has more to do with the speakers than the wattage.

  • How much cost this amp? Did someone know that ?

  • around 1700-1800 for a 1x12 and 2000 for a 2x12.

  • The difference between lone star and lone star special is the valves used to build these amps. On the lone star there is 6L6 (amp class A/B) and on the lone star special, there is EL84 (amp pure class A) sound amazing !

Sorry for my english, is very bad (i'm french)

    Bye

  • it's not class A

    it's AB1

  • wrong! this is the lonestar special which is all class A, the lonestar classic runs in A/B

  • what's the difference between the Lonestar classic and the special?

  • Can this amp's speaker handle palm muted power chord rhythm with a heavy crunch?I have a peavey classic 30 and when ever i palm mute i get slight speaker rumble.

  • Thx!! Nice demo, great sound :)

  • weird connection: at 1:48 SAME LICK as Landgraff Overdrive Demo at 1:22

  • GREAT MAN

how much was it?it sounds great

  • Hi. Wich version of the amp is it? 1x12 inch speaker or 2x12 ???????

    Thx

  • Great demo. Nice variance of tones, and great playing.

  • thx alot man !!! it's pretty clear... i would love some 6L6's :D!!! thx alot

  • I think he's referring to the LoneStar Classic...

  • hay but what's the diference between the classic LoneStar & the special LoneStar?

  • In general, the Special is class A, running with EL84 poweramp valves, and the Classic is classic A/B, running with 6L6 poweramp valves...

Obviously that means that the wattage on the Special is lower due to the different class power, and sounds different...

  • I did retube the amp, but only with the tubes this amp comes stock with. I have since gotten rid of my mesa. Hint: I was certainly keeping my mids and lows up above my highs, I cant stand high pitched guitar tones.

  • Really great job and one of the reasons I just picked up a used LSS head. I'm having trouble dialing in the drive channel to sound anything at all like yours. Are you using any other pedals and if not could you spell out the settings please. Also did you retube the amp?

  • Great job, all the good amps have one drawback (weight)--I thought the demo was very helpful, thks

  • Great demo!

  • this video is great, thanks a lot. Can you do a demo on a mesa classic?

  • yup. Love the amp. Just put a NOS rectifier tube in and you are all set

  • Great demo, excellent playing. It's a bummer to have these technical difficulties; the 'Specials are prone to quirky things like this. The amp should be dead quiet. You get an awfully good sound out of it, though... almost makes me wish I'd gotten the LSS instead of the LSC -- but not quite ;-) ha ha. Rock on!

  • Great video and great playing ;-))

    best regards ;-)))

    Jean

  • Hey, good stuff, what's a surge protector? Because when I turn up my amp(same as yours) , it seems to like tweak a bit, just out of nowhere, a loud squeeky noise. Will that help get rid of that? Really nice stuff

  • Hey, thanks for your comment. A surge protector plugs into your outlet and by grounding the electrical current, can reduce the amount of noise (hiss, hum and feedback)that your amp is producing. It also reducing the risk of power failures by managing the flow of electricity. Worth a shot, dont get the high end, settle for a small SP, should cost you about 30-40 bucks. Remember to isolate your amp from other electrical equipment.

  • ahhh yeh those things. So if I crank my amp at full volume, there won't be any squeaky noise( not hissing or feedback.. like a tube or something) but anyway, have you tried the classic? if so , wich one do you like more (special or classic)

  • It will reduce a lot of the noise. If you are hearing a squeaky noise, than you may have a grounding issue in either your amp or guitar. still, getting a surge protector is a good investment. As for the classic, I have never owned one, but I know that they sound great- I also know that the lonestar special can achieve that same type of sound. I just got a fender supersonic, its a great amp to check out, it has the sound quality of mesa but with fender reliability.

  • Ahh ok I see, thanks. Yeh the supersonic isn't bad either..

  • I beg to differ.. I've played two supersonics that were touchy.. Probably just a bad stock tube in the V1 position. Also, to the guy getting lots of noise, its can be a cable with bad shieling, or a bad preamp tube in V1. The stock tubes are crap and it will always sound better and be more reliable when replaced.

  • Hi.

Fantastic sound. I have a silverface twin reverb and your clean is like mine. I like a lot your amp. But i read people complain about one tube that is gone very fast.

I also love you drive channel is amazing

Thanks and put more videos of your amp :)

  • Thanks alot, ill be posting videos as much as I can- kind of my new hobby. Im going to do another mesa lonestar vid, I forgot to talk about the amazing reverb possibilities this thing offers; it has two separate reverb knobs, so that each channel can have its own setting, on top of that, it also has the option between bright and warm reverb- those settings are found on the back of the amp. thanks again -Rob Swift
