i really feel for you florence, if it's bad for you, i would hate to think what it's going to be like in the future with this on your record. just when you are starting out ,this employer tarnishes your work record, from day one. this is a sad day for new zealand. but bosses be warned you may get rid of the wrong person one day and like it happens in america they may take your life.
Kia ora Florence keep you head up honey shoutwebdaniel is an egg this is unfair and we need to kick this bill to the curb. I am sorry you had to experience Christianity like this they are obviously a pack of jerks that you can so do without. I am embarrased for you that you had to experience such low life people like this. You are a good girl and keep your head up these people need exposing.
Good luck bub, be strong kia kaha good things will come your way honey
You need to harden up. The employer doesn't owe you anything. You started working for them and they didn't know anything about you. Things obviously didn't work out for them so you were let go, at their discretion. Get over it. Why should employees have the option to give 4 weeks notice at any time, often leaving employers in a difficult position, yet employers have no opportunity to let someone go if it's n ot working for them. 90 day trial wins! (and yes, I'm an employer)
@shoutwebdaniel So you take people on without knowing anything about them? Yes, who bothers with all that interviewing and checking of references stuff? When you employ someone you sign a contract which has certain responsibilities on both sides. You think giving 4 weeks notice is unfair? It's a contract, not bonded slavery. Your business matters to you. Don't you think your employees' jobs matter to them?
@NZCTU No need to patronise me. People can paint quite a different picture of themselves when applying for a job. And you're right, it's a contract, and the employer should have the right to let go of people they don't want working for them. It's their business.
@shoutwebdaniel Last time I looked there was nothing to stop employers setting standards for workers, telling them if they weren't meeting them, warning them they had to step up and sacking them if they didn't. That's fair. The 90 day law says you don't have to bother with that for 3 months. Why is that fair, and how does it encourage employers to recruit and train properly and how does it help poor workers improve? It encourages lazy bad business and legalises unfair dismissal.
@shoutwebdaniel If things weren't working out, then why not supply a reason, it seems illogical to get rid of someone without telling them where they are going wrong.
Thank god, a little sense ric. I had wriiten exactly that but couldn't fit it into the comment. Your right about the fact she may have been incompetant, but if this was true they probably wouldn't have waited until 5 minutes before the effective expiration of the period. Further if she was this bad, they would have been abe to get her out using proper process, which allows employees to understand what they were doing wrong and what employers can do to avoid these types in the future.
@bearofhappiness If you have worked with a bunch of idiots, chances are the person hiring them is an idiot. Its not their fault, they were an idiot before they started.
"cry me a river" - the best way to win a political debate, reduce it to a cliche, and avoid the issue. The major problem with New Zealands productivity levels is lacking employment relations and thin recruitment processes. This policy increases the incentive to do less in this area --> increased levels of transitory workers, less institutional knowledge and more welfare. Unemployment will decrease but this is similar to putting a coat of paint on a rusty vehicle and purporting to have fixed it.
Cline Heine, former ACT on Campus member: how exactly is her political affiliation relevant to her experience? Are you trying to suggest she was fired for being involved with Labour? Or are you simply trying to disenfranchise people who disagree with your particular (and highly unpopular) political views?
The 90 day thing is awesome. I have worked with so many idiots, being able to get them fired before 3 months would have been wonderful.
Although 2 weeks notice should be compulsory.
No one knows what this girl was like at work. She may have been brilliant, but she also may have been a bumbling idiot that was told a thousand times how to do things properly, but just never caught on. The employers may have been too embarrassed to tell her that...
If they don't want to employ you why do you think the government should use force to have them employ you?
If they were not able to fire you there is a good chance you would have never gotten hired. Its also possible you are required to get a raise but the company isn't able to pay that much so they have to continue to hire and fire people because it helps save money.
The argument is sound... "you're only as good as your last job" - but if you got summarily dismissed from that job, there can be no doubt that your reputation becomes tarnished.
OK - the piece may be politically-motivated, and Florence might be a member of some organisation - even if this is/was fiction it would still be an accurate example of how the law is/will be misused.
Geez that background music is annoying. It would have been better if the CTU had placed an ad looking for people and background checked them, but what happened to the girl, happened, her political affiliation doesn't mean she made the whole thing up. That's a bit of a sideshow attack you got going on ryanstev30, heinemeister... you guys don't sound exactly "impartial" yourselves either
Oops, busted. Why didn't the CTU spell her name the way Florence spells it at the Grassroots Labour website... where she has been a member for well over a year?
