I think he was a closet atheist who just used the guise of religion as a way to control his flock. Really nothing more than a 19th century Warren Jeffs. In fact, if he were alive today he would be treated as such. I'm actually thankful for his vocal assertions in the JOD, which he approved as doctrine (not just his opinion--sorry).
