Males are generally larger and may have slightly longer fins and greater slope on their head however, I find its easiest to tell when there is a female around... males tend to pay a lot of attention to them and often they pair up
LOL Yes I do, in fact I have 3 pairs in the tank right now with fry. Life is VERY tense in the aquarium and there are a lot of confrontations. Without the fry, they get along pretty good. No worries though, no injured fish, no eaten fry.
yeah i bet... i have a communal tank i think you call it with lots of different fish, but my cichlids are my pride and joy lilly (female) has laid her eggs and bruiser has fertalided them but in such a weird place she laid them... are they meant to be black? We managed to find out where they were and all the eggs are black... i have never managed to see the eggs before hatching. so im rather excited any day now :)
The eggs usually start out white but as the fry develop inside the eggs get darker. It takes about 3 days for the eggs to hatch once laid. Good luck with yours :)
ok i have a quick ?, i have a parrot cichlid, needlefish, 2black convicts,a small plecostamo, and a dragon goby in a 35 gallon tank, do u thionk i can squeezy another fish in there
Kewl convicts. I have a pair that are breeding at the moment. White male & dark female. Originally i started with four of them, but took the other two out once these two paired off.
I have a convict, and some mpanga(ish) fish. Everything was so peaceful. The convict grew to be about the size of the mpanga and then they got it on. They had eachothers mouths and reefing themselves down into the gravel. I went to go grab the video cam and when i came back they stopped fighting!!!
It was so interesting seeing them fight over alpha male.
the convict had the skinned marks above his mouth and the mpanga had under his mouth torn abit
You can tell the difference because males are generally larger and females, when they are ready to spawn, will change their colouring. Their top fin will be blue, their tail yellow, and their under-belly will have orange/pink spots.
awesome video. i bought 2 of these about 6 months ago and now they've had there 2nd bath of fry so now i have about 60 of these little bastards, but they are brobably the most entertaining fish i've ever had and im not getting rid of any of them until absolutely have to...
i thought you wre being racist by saying "black convict" chiclids.
