This doesn't seem like that good an idea, is it really true? I kind of think it's gonna miss entirely what desmonds was about if theyre not even it for god sake
1) Ram John Holder is Guyanese, you are quite correct but the character of "Porkpie" was born in Jamaica and moved to Guyana when he was four. This was to tie in with an earlier episode where the comedy was supposed to have been based around this fact (this in fact was never aired but is avaliable and confirmed in the original scripts)
2) The "Don't scratch my Sofa" is a play on words, the intro replacing the "Soca" for "Sofa as this was meant to represent the family moving to the area from abroad, i.e. "Don't scratch my sofa", as in being careful unloading my possessions and also making the point that their possessions were all they had when arriving, hence highlighting the vulnerability of themselves as people and their situation.
Why on earth is Porkpie referred to as a mature Jamaican hairdresser? Ram John Holder is GUYANESE, not Jamaican!! The character of Porkpie is also from Guyana. Desmond and Shirley, and the actors who played them were also Guyanese. Whoever wrote this - please get your facts right. This is an insult to the Guyanese contribution to the UK. It is ignorance to assume that all West Indians come from Jamaica. No disrespect to the Jamaicans who have also contributed greatly to society.
@raymondsunspot, when we used to have the subtitles on whilst watching Desmond's the lyrics always used to state don't scratch my soca.
