  • The Red Scare was a modern day version of the Salam Witch Trials.

  • Reminds me the propaganda and the fear in Greece the last two years

  • 40 million + slaughtered in soviet russia, 65 + million slaughtered in communist china (they claim 80 million +), if somebody was a nazi who supported hitlers regime they should have been exposed just like the communists who had the same types of slave labor camps and slaughtered everybody and there familys who dared to speak out against the marxist "utopia"

  • @scottishchap2008 That's not the point. People were being ufairly convicted of being a communist purely based off rhetoric rather than fact, and their lives would be destroyed. Back in the '60's, reputation is what gave you a job. If people thought you were a communist, you would NEVER get a job again in your life. It doesn't matter what the communists did, or what the Nazi's did. This is about unfair conviction based on fear.

  • My favorite movie of 2005. This should have won Best Picture, not that bullshit racial shit Crash.

  • Just watched the movie and it is really intriguing.Great acting as well

  • looks like george clooney really knows how to direct movies :D

  • a 2005 movie in black and white????

  • @r3liable Nothing wrong with Black and white films, it is a good film, i'd recommend it.

  • Quelle honte que le maccarthisme

  • This is my favorite film of 2005. Just awesome. Again, the Oscars screwed this and Munich of Best Picture. Fuck that racist shit Crash.

  • Excellent film. Fuck the Oscars for giving that bullshit film Crash the Oscar for Best Picture. Don'cha just love when the Oscars fuck up?

  • @thelupoistheman1 That's why I pretty much ignore what film gets best picture, the choice is usually fucking stupid. Why, just look at how that POS Hurt Locker won best picture.

  • This movie gives me the chills. Ive seen it so many times. i never get tired of it.

  • David Strathairn was just brilliant in this. I agree Murrow had so much integrity he would not let a runaway train stop him

  • Good night Sandman.

  • no doubt in my mind, David Strathairn was the hands-down winner for the Oscar; it's amazing how political those awards are, and the mediocre actors that end up with the goods when guys like this walk away empty-handed

  • @vindinArges he did a great job >.< i bet u wanted spider-man 3 to win best picture XD

  • @DirectorTurnerable I don't know why you're replying to me. All I said was Strathairn should've won the Academy Award, maybe you should re-read what I wrote.

  • @vindinArges Honestly, i agree that Stratharian did an amazing job, but calling Phillip Seymour Hoffman a "mediocre actor" is just ridiculous. There are certainly some awards that are given as career momentos or gold stars riding a popularity wave, but I think its too easy to criticize from the outside, and too hard to fairly evaluate art. All of the actors in his category did an amazing job, it's like trying to compare which diamond is shinier. My personal choice would've been Heath Ledger.

  • @rh1252 I didn't specify Hoffman, you just assumed. In general, actors are sometimes deserving and sometimes not. In this day and age playing in a holocaust movie as Ricky Gervais pointed out will help a lot. For example, one of the actors who deserved his Oscar is Tommy Lee Jones but a ridiculous amount of people say it was wrong not to give to Ralph Fiennes and of course that's because Schindler's List is worshipped. Now, it's straight guys playing gay guys that are the trend...Penn,Ledger,etc

  • @vindinArges,

Tommy Lee Jones sucked in The Fugitive.

  • @thelupoistheman1 sucks that u live

  • great movie

  • it might had happened decades ago, but the feeling nowadays is not that much different. Anyway, amazing film, amazing cast, and David Strathairn, what a superb actor!

  • Very sophisticated film.

  • Good Choice of Black and White. I can almost see the Red screaming between the film clippings. Awesome.

  • This movie is amazing. George clooney and Robert Downey Jr. are like the best actors ever. This film has made me realize that government is so messed up just like our society and it's showing us that McCarthyism was a completely crap. This whole communist thing was just to make us in fear of being attacked by the communist when actually we were blaming them when their was no real evidence.

  • @Drevilrocks

    Unfortunately this story repeats itself...

  • @Drevilrocks

Unfortunately history keeps repeating itself, those days it was the communists, a few years ago was the Muslims and who knows what will be invented next...

  • @vanessalieghio It seems to me like everyone hates the atheists. I may be biased, but honestly we are an easy target in such a religious country.

  • @blablaidontcarewhour i find that everyone hates theists. We are at loggerheads.

  • This is an effing brilliant masterpiece. I had to watch it again to appreciate the tension delievered through the mere black & white screen!

  • can someone please explain in detail exactly what moment in history this film is about i'd really like to understand it better before i watch it. much appreciated

  • @roloug95

It is in the early 1950s

  • Seriously, how many folks posting here are over the age of 35 & even remember the Berlin Wall coming down - & not by watching video's of it? The Airlifts? 'Nam? Korea? Anything remotely associated w/ "Red Scare"?? Were any of you part of "mock commie attacks & told to get under ur desks at school?" Not many; I don't imagine. Most Americans are products of what they are told in PUBLIC SCHOOL. We weren't stupid, but purposely made ignorant of the facts. Its all part of the Hegelian Dialectic.

  • @genstonewall You are speaking my language! Its absolutely ridiculous how schools give students horrible information just to remain politically correct. Anyone who even tries reading a history textbook in high-school is fed propaganda, or faces information with terrible gaps in it. I guess its a good thing most people dont read them...ha.

  • One of the best movies to come out of this last decade.

  • @outinsider -- Couldn't agree more. Plus, sigh...George, he's so dreamy. :)

  • @1214gaia

Well, that's obvious. He is the intelligent person's hunk.

  • I kept hearing about this movie in History Class, then I kept hearing about it is Sociology, now I'm hearing about it in Film class. I just got it off of Netflix and I cant wait.

  • Great movie we watched it in my college Mass. Com. class. But one problem I had was, what was the point of Robert Downey Jr.'s character? I know the whole married couples couldn't work together back then, but other then that, what did his character do?

  • clever movie, i'm not concerned how authentic it is, because i'm from europe, but it is really made well

  • 1 OF THE MOST OVERRATED MOVIES OF ALL TIME,IT WAS LIKE WATCHING A MOVIE FROM THE 1940'S,IF YOU WANT TO WATCH A GOOD POLITICAL MOVIE WATCH THE GHOST WRITER,JFK,BUT NOT THIS MOVIE

  • @folladordeprostis Aw, didnt like the bwack and white? It was set in the 50s, of course it reflected culture from the 50s. Go watch cartoons.

  • Today's so-called "Journalism" would have true journalists like Edward R. Murrow rolling in their graves! Nuff said!

  • Fuck Hollywood... you know damned well you couldn't count on a fair telling of the Joe McCarthy story from Hollywierd.

  • Good riddance to that monster we call Senator McCarthy.

  • @Airbender222 so was communism good?????

  • i love clooney's choice to make the film black and white. it just adds to the mood so well.

  • Comment removed

  • Something I have to wonder. As if this would even be able to happen anymore.

  • I saw the film last night with Dad. It was amazing. I need to read biographies of McCarthy and Murrow.

  • i want to buy this film - i had no idea the murrow v mccarthy media battle had been made a movie

  • i

    need

    to

    see

    this

    :(

  • everyone talks about the United States and how ignorant we are when doing so is like looking at 1000 years of history and saying people are not animals. Sure we Americans have had our flaws and dumb decisions but how can the world look on to such a diverse and free country saying "Americans" are ignorant. You can't make judgment based on the actions of a few bad leaders. All of us are immigrants here, America is the most accepting and culturally expanding country in the world.

  • @ReallyDisturbing America is the most accepting? What America do you live in?

  • @sphrkilo I think America CAN be accepting, when it wants to be. We have the potential to be so incredible, but sadly it is easily wasted away.

  • @uptownxgirlx so Join up! Stand up and voice the opinion you have. Voice your ideas voice your plan for an incredible society! you know why? because YOU have that right here in the U.S. You can NOT and will NOT do that in many countries. And it is easily wasted but put yourself outside the general populous and remember that vision. Visionaries make it here because we have the freedom to do so.

  • @ReallyDisturbing oh believe me, i voice my opinions plenty =) I also think its important to be understanding, which i try my hardest to be.

  • @ReallyDisturbing In eurpe you can easily express your visions-easier than in usa

  • George & Grant did an amzing job with the script.(: This movie was most definitely amazing.

  • just watched this movie and I can say that it was without a doubt... EPIC.

completely relevant to the situations our country now finds itself in.

anyone who loves liberty and the constitution will love this movie.

  • The only thing I liked in the movie was the sax.

  • i prefer it for the sex

  • theres no sex in this

  • Good nite and good fuck !

  • and I like the amount of smokes here

    As a former smoker.

Hollywood is entirely in the pocket of Phillip.

It is true that in the 50's it was a common place but if they didn't show the smoking nobody would notice today.

  • Classic Journalism...

  • joetaff: what does being black have to do with anything? haha

  • this movie is good, im black btw

  • I do not believe in communism, but the red scare was a perfect example of the United States ignorance

  • Are you saying there were no communist or soviet spies within the US government or US government organizations.

  • There might have been, but the red scare was a purge like the SS looting the poor Jewish People's Houses, Tell me what is Anit-American? So does that mean people who are different are the enemies of this country? America is a land of Imigrants, it is a diverse country and it does not really have a culture of its own, since it adopts every culture's customs.

  • @nextstep333 One day a man shows up on your front lawn with armed bodyguards surrounding him. He tells you not to talk about certain things. He tells you what you can talk about. He was hired to tell you these things by your neighbors. Are you ignorant for doing what he says?

  • @18yardsout The question is would you support a massive witch hunt and be judged by an Inquisition just because your ideas do not fit with the rest of the United States, that is barbaric and wrong!

  • @nextstep333 I don't agree with it, but if I'm honest I think I would comply in order to protect myself and those around me. That was one of the brilliant pitfalls set up by that system; "If one is a communist it is likely their associates are as well." When you defy the system it doesn't hurt just one person. It wasn't ignorance that held people back. Ignorance is what put McCarthy in power. If you feel the need to point a finger, direct it toward Wisconsin for electing him, and the 50s Senate.

  • @nextstep333

Not to mention, the Red Scare was flat out unconstitutional.

  • @nextstep333 "McCarthyism" is really kind of mislabeled if you ask me. As you know, my friend, the Red Scare really started in the days of Woodrow Wilson about 1917. McCarty came in a the tale end of it.

  • @Zachw2007 Yes it is. One of the pioneers of the Second Red Scare is McCarthy.

  • @nextstep333 so true. every person in the united states is ignorant because of the red scare. o wait, that makes no sense. just goes to show ur ignorance :D

  • @mrtretre100 The Red Scare was one of America's contradiction. Talking about the land of the free, at a price! Before you go on and start bashing people's comments on YouTube videos, why don't you pick up a book and read on the Cold War.

  • @nextstep333 Sorry I just don't like when people generalize a trait towards an entire group of people because of the actions of one person, or a smaller group of people, especially at a different time period.

  • @nextstep333 actually, the red scare was not in the 1950s but in the year after the end to ww1 when factory wokers across the U.S. went on strike and many were lablb communist because people thought something like the russian revolution was happening and the U.S. geovernment would be overrun. Obiousley that wasn't the case, but many workers and union leaders had been pointlessley arrested or labled communist. My point is the red scare was in 1919, but it was an honest mistake I could have made.

  • @tromuniapp Yes and it continued on into the 1950s.

  • @nextstep333 what was the red scare???please tell

  • @chand145 Why don't you read and form your own opinion about it. If you read it you might understand it more than the 500 Character comment.

  • @chand145 the red scare is when the US, enveloped by a total fear of communism, went on a sort-of "witch hunt" if you will, and started rounding up "suspected" communists. The "champion" of this movement was a Senator Joseph McCarthy, and this film is about how celebrated news journalist Edward Murrow got tired of this debacle, and fought back.

  • @nextstep333 I always saw it as a perfect example of what fear and a lust for power by a few men can do to people.

  • Where can I find it online?

  • If you have Netflix, it's on "Watch Instantly"

  • in just realized...the 05 Best Picture nominees were all not aimed at children by any means

  • You're an idiot. There is proven cases of peoples lives destroyed by this asshole. Did you know that Nixon was one of his henchman? Douche.

  • A brilliant and brave film nominated for 6 Oscars yet winning none. If this film had won even one Oscar, do you think this would be making some kind of a political statement? Interesting to consider.

  • Sraphael, I just finished watching this movie and I loved it!!! I was stunned it didn't win any Oscars. I was very impresed by the film. I loved Murrow's passion for the truth and how well he presented it. I wonder what political statement would come if this film had won Best Picture. Between the smooth jazz music and the message of delivering the truth and how in news that comes first, it is a great movie: A+

  • (♥_♥)

  • (@_@)

  • awesome movie

  • cool movie =)

  • Great movie, great technique!!

  • Having searched my conscience and my files, I cannot contend that I have always been right or wise. But I have attempted to pursue the truth with some diligence and to report it, even though, as in this case, I had been warned in advance that I would be subjected to the attentions of Senator McCarthy.

    -Murrow

He is now my new hero

  • I have a strange attraction to the black and white movies.

This movie was great, not boring, with brilliant acting

  • " we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home" Great comparison to Bush years.

  • A great film!

    Thanks for the post!

  • "We will not walk in fear of one another..."-Good night , and good luck.-

  • is it good?

  • watch it-excellent film and its only 90mins long so if you dont like it its not like you've missed out on much.

  • Its an excellent film. I bought it on dvd and whenever I get depressed about the state of the world I watch it.

  • THis came on Yesterday and I was stupid enough not to watch it and now I regret it!

  • i saw it yesterday and this is now one of my "BluRay must haves". Awesome movie!

  • i found it quite boring

  • best movie ever!

  • I just saw this movie today and I, for all my facist beliefs, agreed with Murrow. I greatly admired the man's integrity and serious balls he had to go after McCarthy.

  • @PeterBluth How would you define your fascist beliefs?

  • it's a verey great movie !
