i use a small spit motor the type you use in making your own spit in a drum etc..can buy them to run on batteries or power type also..they are dirt cheap. and make perfect speed drying motors..your barbeque store will carry them.. as for wrapping motor i use a singer sewing machine motor and the foot control pedal, you can wire it to resist the current and speeds.. works peerfect.. pick up a cheap sewing machine from a garage sale dirt cheap... great vid thanks for posting it..
Nice idea with the motor. I was lazy and just bought a cheap rod turner! Cracking rod as well, I mostly sea fish but have made a few of the sage rods for friends.
How come you dont do it by hand, I mean the motor is practically useless here as it is moving super slow. Do it by hand, anybody can do it with a motor, doing it by hand takes skill. At least use a motor with a higher rpm, this is brutal.
agreed. this is about as fun as watching paint dry. Looks like u lathed your handle on that motor too, looks pathetic. Take it from someone who builds 300+ rods a year. And, try a knitting needle if u want to apply finish, not a drill bit for Christs sakes.
Not building 300 rod a year if I did I would buy a pro wrapper. This does the Job and puts the thread on under tension, plus it cost next to nothing to build hence keeps the price of the build down for the basic home build.
Plus its ideal as a rod dryer post application of epoxy.
Sure I could put a singer motor on it with foot controle and spin a rod up in an hour but cost goes up!
knitting needle or not it got got the Job Done lighten up and smile
@mulisha6 your a tool.....post some pics or a video of one of your 300 rods you made this year...I also used a microwave motor for my finishing/ drying motor
Yep i built it from a scrap microwave motor and a few bit of timber. The base is the bottom of a garden gate that was cut down. It was for a build project on the graylinghunter web pag
