When we hear him playing just a small fragment of Chopin Scherzo 3, instead of the whole piece, we realize how lucky for the other pianists (specially those that have made the piece a personal "war-horse") and how sad for us that he did not record it...Apart from the fact that we can hear straight away how our standards have dropped! Has everybody heard the beauty he brought out of the chords of the midle section? Just magic! People, be aware! Not everything that shines nowadays is gold!
Horowitz comparison between the chopin scherzo and the beethoven appassionata is wrong. It's actually the end of the chopin ballade no1 that takes the same chords than the appassionata. He's improvising the end of the chopin ballade not a scherzo. But great stuff and great guy!
@ydahmane You're right, it's the Ballade, not the Scherzo, that resembles the Appassionata, and I'm ashamed to say that I never noticed the similarity until Horowitz pointed it out! Now the similarity is so obvious that I can't get over the fact that I never noticed it before, and I've played both pieces!
He recorded it once during his longest retirement (as I remember in 1957). RCA

@volodya2
Scherzos in italiano si traduce come "Scherzi". Lo Scherzo è un genere pianistico inventato da Chopin. :)
