  • this was an awesome way to test out this camera! i feel like all camera tests should be like this and have at least some story/entertainment value!

  • I'm assuming that the slow-mo wasn't in-camera 60 fps?

  • @Nosnibor

Correct. The in camera 60fps looks much better. This is only a FCP speed effect that ended up shifting the fields producing some wonky motion..

  • whats the fps?

  • i thought you enjoy my videos.

  • @FinalCutKing I do :D

  • This video was GREAT. the only thing that ruined it was the music around 1:18

  • @doubledeeder

the music is Doug's favourite song and sums up his feelings of sorrow and heart break to Christian's constant belittling.

  • @MattTrecartin actually doubledeeder is right. the great video otherwise.

  • Great video, just one thing is the focus, all the shots always seem to be out of focus, ESPECIALLY the close up, where the main character is completely blurry and the ground behind him is in full focus, might want to keep that in mind when shooting. Otherwise, great video, keep it up.

  • @thehalflifedude

yes you are absolutely right, the shot with the phone booth in particular is horribly out of focus. thanks for your comment. a bush league mistake.

  • calm down ladies, my comment expresses an opinion, that the content is pants.... what i should add is that i think your camera work is nice and you've done a good job on the colours...chaz, give me a EX1 and i'll smash you together a video

also, leona lewis' bleeding love as an ending track destroys any trace of interest in the video i may have once had.

  • @altsub

    touche

  • @MattTrecartin really nice camera and you have some really nice videos..... just wondering how much is the camera and where did you get it from ??????

p.s. keep up the good work :) SUBSCRIBED

  • this is the worst thing i have ever seen shot on such a great camera

  • @altsub

    really? so sorry

  • @altsub dude fuck off..you re just jealous..Matt Treacartin,you re awesome!! altsub is a moron..good movie!

  • @CODWhySoSerious

    thanks!

  • @MattTrecartin Every time dude ;)..altsub is just an example of stupid haters that just troll your videos for no reason!!.and you seem to be a quite of a nice guy..(you actually respond with a sorry to a guy that wrote a bad comment on your video ://)..and it is a really great movie !

  • @altsub do better you bitch

  • @vdoggyd98 about 5 grand

  • what shutter setting did you use for the slow motion at the end?

  • @JimboAppleseed

the slow motion at the end was done in final cut and was originally shot at regular speed with a 60 shutter speed. Unfortunately the frame blending in FCP is causing some funky motion.

  • @MattTrecartin Final cut really sucks for slow motion, I'd suggest either the optical flow from motion4 or adobe after effects.

  • @loveja1

Yes the FCP slow motion is not great. Thanks for your suggestions, we also use Cinema tools to retime some material.

  • @MattTrecartin Ive never used cinema tools, actually I've never opened it,lol I have enough to edit and learn, if I had to learn another program I just might have to go postal! lol between fcp, motion, after effects, digital juice, sound track pro, and a few other, I might blow!

  • @loveja1 I have and EX-3 and you can overcrank on the camera itself. This slow motion looks software based. If he did on the camera, it would've looked SHHHMooooooth. Just sayin'.

  • @JimboAppleseed

just 60 shutter. It was shot at normal speed and slowed in FCP but the frame blending is causing some ugly motion.

  • first sentence : " what the fuck....."

second sentence : " what the fuck.... "

third sentence : " what the fuck... "

It's what's happen when there is not enought money for pay a scenario writer / dialogist.

  • What encode settings did you use to get this quality???

  • EXCELENTE!!!!

  • Funny! Well done. Did you use a 35mm adapter on this?

  • @fbordez

No adapter, just the fixed EX1 lens

  • hey how do you make sound sound as though it is coming through a cell phone... any tips

  • @gkilgore9

band pass filter in Final Cut Pro. Or any software for that matter..

  • the shot at 0:57 seems to be greening a little bit, it's tough color correcting outoor footage sometimes, but you got plenty of references for the whites and blacks in the shot so take advantage of that and just judge it with your eye, but it might be the mids that's giving it the green tone so try shifting it towards the oppsosite color on the circle. just my 2 cents, nice video

  • How much?

  • That is a beautiful Video that thing takes

  • why the are trails, strobes while slow motion?

  • @BossLelyuk

this is due to the Final Cut Pro 'frame blending' the motion effect. I would suggest UNCHECK Frame Blending option when applying a speed effect.

  • @MattTrecartin

ok, thanks, besides the video quality is great )) good luck)

  • 1:00 "THIS PHONE IS TAPPED"

  • @stavit2

haha, wondering if anyone would notice that. That was actually stuck to the phone already but it works so well in context of this story ha. We shot these test scenes long before the Christian Bale rant happened

  • This footage looks crisp and great. I can't understand why this looks so good, yet some other ex3 footage on here looks cheap, flat and one-dimensional?

  • That EX is about an 8k priced cam, isnt it??

    TC

  • lol, what happens to the guy.

  • @happyfoxproductions

he is sad and alone so he calls back the mean man and they have a conversation about life and love that lasts all night.

  • the musix dont fit at all

  • Did you use some sort of stabilizer like SteadiCam?

  • @VTWHK

No, this was shot handheld and with a tripod

  • @MattTrecartin Wow. Your camera man must be very skillful. I can't see notable shake in the track shot between 0:30 - 0:40

  • @VTWHK

    thanks!

  • did you do color correction?... which format did u shoot it on.. i also have ex1r.. just bought it, trying to get familiar with it... I also have one more question.. the cameras monitor, wen ever i look at it while shooting, its too dark.. but wen i close it and wen i upload the video into vegas the picture is crystal clear... do u kno wat might be da problem.. i will be calling sony first thing in da morning..

  • @ifinefilmz

yes color correction was done in Apple Color. Shot in XDCAM HD 1080i 60. For the monitor, check the monitor display brightness setting.

  • nicee footage... u probably did the color correction den...

  • have u used any lens adapter for this camera?

  • @ifinefilmz

no this was shot only with the stock fixed lens

  • The most entertaining camera test I've seen! Thanks!

  • @newsjarrod Hey thanks!

  • I was trying to figure out why this looked so familiar....

    Cheers from Halifax.

  • the color is not that good

  • I recently bought sony ex1r... and i just finished a project for myself... it doesn't give me the quality of motion picture or even closer... i want my video to seem like its been shot on a film camera... can somebody plz help... are there websites, where i can learn more bout my camera?... plz help... to edit my work i'm using sony vegas pro 9... as u can see da video above, it seems like its been shot on a film camera... but how do u change the settings.. plz help...

  • Comment removed

  • what's the difference between ex1 and ex3? Is the latter just a more updated version or something?

  • That was funny 5 stars.

  • great colors! i really like that

  • I shoot everything on an ex1 as well and I love the footage. Check out some of my slow motion stuff.

  • When going thru the editing process how did u get it to look this good i especially like the realistic color scheme, forgive me im new to this stuff

  • it starts with setting your camera up so you record it pretty much how it looks to your eye. Then you only have to do slight color work in post to achieve the looks you want

  • dude, I've got a ex3 project in fcp6, I'm having trouble getting it to youtube - any suggestions. I'm doing h.264 as usual, but maybe I shouldn't be exporting to quicktime? I'm pulling my hair out of my bald skull!

  • whatever format you are editing in it doesn't matter, make a quicktime reference movie in FCP. no need to embed media, just make a same as source ref movie. Throw it into Streamclip and spit out H.264 at whatever framerate it is and size you want. audio 44.1 khz for youtube. Youtube HD is a bit weird though. This is only 720p.

  • crap, the project is in 1080p 60i, so does that mean I'm screwed for youtube or can I downres it?

  • you can use streamclip to de-interlace but I would keep it interlaced and see how Youtube handles it.

    so try:

    quicktime

    H.264

    1920x1080 framesize

    29.97 framerate

    check 'interlaced scaling'

    Sound Mpeg4 AAC 44.1kHz

  • great quality but this was just plane weird

  • thanks. Speaking of weird planes, check out the Vought V-173

  • when you bought this did it come with a mic?

If not what mic do you use?

    x

  • you can plug an XLR mic into the camera but it does not come with one. We just used the onboard internal camera mic. We were testing the optics more than the audio but it turned out ok for being the default camera mic.

  • I love this cam!!! Look at those sharp thin lines at 0:52 !!! Very high definition...

  • And the audio was recorded by the built in camera mic!

  • HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!

Your Short-Film Was Comic!!!, It Looks Like A Professional Film. Hey Did You Buy The Video Cam From Internet Or A Local Store?

  • ha thanks. Christian Bale helped us... We got the camera from a local store that is a Sony dealer. Try B&H of you want to order over the internet.

  • hey MAn good stuff, but did you edit with mac pro or the imac??? i´ve got an Imac 4gb and very interested to get this cam but not sure that support the HD

  • You will be fine on an iMac. I edited this with a macbook 2GHz model with 2GB of RAM. Good Luck!

  • Good film look.

  • Are you using a film adapter with this shot? or is that the lens that came with the ex 1?

  • no adapter, just the stock fixed EX1 lens.

  • Wow, How did you get it to like like film! It looks amazin!

  • thanks bobby, I did some color grading with Apple Color where I affected the overall color balance and adjusted the contrast. Also added a slight vignette around the edges.

  • Wow, that seems to be a nice lens for a stock fixed EX1 lens!

  • Thats Kool! Do you think I should get the EX 1 as well, or should I just buy a thousand dollar camera and get the Letu 35 mini adapter for the movie feel?

  • I would get an EX1 because it will be much better quality than a cheap camera and more versatile. Unless you don't care about picture quality so much and just want the 'look' of the film lenses... The Letus adapters are ok but if you want to achieve maximum depth of field in your images you should look at the Canon 5D markII.

  • haha, nice video

  • thanks!

  • haha wtf :)

  • hahah is so funny the call XD

  • This looks great!

  • haha that was great!

  • what was the point of the movie?

    great camera btw:P

  • We shot this when the camera first came out, we had the camera to demo for an afternoon. We were just testing the camera. We never knew who was going to be on the other end of the phone at the time.

When the Christian Bale movie set rant thing happened I thought it would be funny to use as the phone voice. I edited it to match the pauses in the live action shots and added an audio filter. Thanks for watching.

  • oh, I didn't hear that it was Bale:P

  • Hi there, you have mimicked film very well, so congrats for doing that, i have just shot a video with the same cam but with the red rock adapter and nikon lenses im planning to edit it in fcp and use color to grade it, this video has given me a lot of confidence :)

  • thanks! this camera is great and with the Redrock adapter and film lenses you will be able to shoot with increased depth of field yielding very cinematic images. Good Luck!

  • Hi Matt that's exactly what i got and im very happy with the footage, just one small q

im planning to edit in fcp in the native compression of the footage and then grad it in color, what compression should i use to send it back to fcp, pro res, or on comp.

becasue in case of original compression i think there would be a recompression NO ?

    thanks

  • use ProRes HQ. I like to turn all my source media into prores on import if I can. If the project is very large and you don't have the time or hard drive space then edit in native format until finishing. Then transcode to ProRes before Color. Color likes this flavor of quicktime and there is no loss due to the recompression.

  • Thanks a Million Matt and best of luck with your future projects

  • No problem. Have fun with the adapter and Apple Color!

  • Great job man. Great camera work
