Stop N Shop and Shop Rite are in markets from basically Hudson and Kingston, NY south. North of there is Price Chopper and Hannaford (formerly Shop N Save).
I haven't heard this name in over 25 years! I forgot about Grand Union. Do they still have Stop N Shop and Shop Rite in that neck of the woods? We moved to CA in 1984, and I haven't been back since.
GU Markets in the Adirondacks of NY and Southern NY. I still work for them. I went through the two changes from Grand Union to TOPS Markets and then to GU Markets.
The other form GU is now known as is Southern Family Markets. That has to be in the southern part of the US.
Wow....Craziness.... Grand Union used to be in Houston as Weingartens stores. Weingartens went out of business and Safeway bought them in the 80's. Safeway left Houston and the owners turned the stores into AppleTree markets. AppleTree closed its doors in 1994, being split all apart. Several stores were bought by Fiesta (local Houston chain)...and still have this look even today!!!! That is crazy.....22 years later...and 4 chains later....
Wait there's still grand unions in CT?!? I haven't seen a grand union in my neck of the woods (New Haven county) since like 94' or 95'. Wow I need to take a trip up to Storrs lol!
I worked at the Elmwood Park, NJ Grand Union from 1987 until they closed in 2001. I don't think Don Vaillancourt was the cause of the company's downfall though he had a part in it, the rat bastard. I know he was sentenced to three years for embezzling 2 million dollars, but I don't know if he actually did any time. I hope so and I hope he rots in hell.
It went out of business in 2001, thanx to some guy name Vailnecourt, who squandered a ton of millions of dollars, with some lavish trip to Brazil, resulting in 3 bankruptcy filings, the last being in November of 2000. They are mostly Price Chopper and Stop And Shop Stores now.
I remember Grand Union and Price Chopper. When I used to go up to Lake George every August, my grandparents had to buy some food from a Grand Union store in Lake George village, which was later replaced by Price Chopper.
I love Grand Union chicken wings!!!
