I managed to get on a post maintenance test flight a couple of years ago in a Boeing 737-300. Went through a controlled stall and missed approach at Bournemouth. Truly fantastic experience but very weird being the only person in the cabin. How did you come across this enthusiasts flight? Are they done often?
I dont understand how the pilot is giving all these technical info, did he leave the microphone on when he was talking with the traffic control tower!
I'd like to take an enthusiast flight. Seems like fun. I experienced a real missed approach once, or at least a landing delay. I think it was due to a busy runway, but we circled Stanford once before ending up going the same way landing on a nearby runway. I noticed about 3/4 into the turn that we were making an unusually long turn, and after we straightened out I saw the same side of Stanford that I saw before the turn.
The only missed approach I have ever had was on an Emirates A380 landing at YSSY. My dad was driving under the plane when it happened, he said it was an amazing sight :)
@thestig747. I Live 20Kms Away from YSSY check out my vids my departure on Jetstar A320 YSSY-YMAV, I would of loved to see the Emirates A380 Missed Aproach......
@LemonMeringuePie444 A missed approach occurs when an aircraft is coming in for a landing and the landing is aborted. This can happen for several reasons: It mainly occurs because of too much traffic (ie. an aircraft is taking off when another is trying to land and the departing plane isn't yet clear of the runway. Also, sometimes if a pilot just isn't comfortable with his lineup to the runway, is still too high, or coming in too hot. I am not a real pilot, but have 100s' of hours with FS2004
@MrBigrobmjca3 I believe there should be more people who at least do simulators so that during something frightful, more people can be under control. You don't ever have to leave the ground to learn how to properly fly a plane, but it's still not a proper replacement for actual training. I almost paid for flight training, but a week before I got ticketed for my headlight not working and had to pay for that instead. I'll always regret not knowing a 3 dollar fuse would cost me my pilot's license.
@Aviationnation10 No it was an enthusiasts charter flight, not schedueled. It was on MyTravel before they were merged into Thomas Cook, hence the orange wing tips.
I had a missed approach once landing in Bogota (maybe it was an Airbus A320, but I don't remember very well); it scared me for a moment, but hearing the noise of all of the engines at full power was immediately reassuring.
I had a missed approach in a a380 once. We were almost about to touch down, then the engines fired up and all of a sudden we were climbing. Makes you wonder what the hells going on. I must say, the landing gear in a a380 can be a flippen loud bang and gives you a fright.
this video is not that extreme. one month back i had experienced something similar. but the plane pulled back really fast and in a loud way. i was little bit nervous actually. engines on full thrust and 2 minutes later we are above the clouds.
Missed approaches aren't something you choose to do.... they're due to uncontrollable circumstances (aircraft/ animal/ obstruction on rwy) or if it isn't safe to continue approach (airspeed is lined up properly, altitude isn't right, winds aren't favorable etc)
been on 3 missed approaches- United in LAX, Delta in ATL & Southwest in RSW. First 2 were basically over the threshold, and they are surprising, but i don't recall a whole lot of G's. Mostly the engine's sudden high rpm's were the biggest clue...
I hear that the gravity of missed approach has a pretty gruesome human effect, given the descent and then sudden ascent. Did you feel anything on the missed approach? i.e. strong gravity, sickness, etc?
@jukepeppu Yes the controller did advise the crew they were cleared for the missed approach. As you can see from the video, the camera is in the passenger cabin but you can still hear the cockpit audio. It is also "clear" outside, not instrument conditions, this indicates a demonstration flight. In normal operations, you declare a missed approach at the "decision height" on approach, but for demonstrations, you advice air traffic control of you intentions in advance so they can plan traffic.
Just wondering, when landing and take off are all electronic devices supposed to be turned off? And aint a video camera an electronic device? Just wondering about that, or are there exceptions to "cameras" Always thought it would be cool to film take off and landing with my video camera. But they say to turn all electronic devices off.
@ttttttfanman it doesn't matter. I always use it anyway and so do alot of people do it. I don't know why they ask you to do that. It's mainly devices that send or recieve signals and stuff like that.
@ttttttfanman You're correct. Electronic devices aren't supposed to be allowed. But that is for the reason of signal interference. Devices that don't interfere with any flight operations aren't dangerous at all. I agree with #UltimateSonicFan0001. I always use my video camera to capture takeoffs and landings, and even the flight attendants don't mind.
@ttttttfanman I asked a retired captain for 744s from Singapore Airlines about this, not sure if he was joking with me, but he said that airlines don't like passengers to film takeoffs and landings because there will be video evidence if a pilot or cabin crew makes a mistake.
@ttttttfanman Video cameras and such don't damage/harm/interfere with the systems on-board aircraft. But, to make it easier for the F/A's the Safety Videos/Announcements just say no electronics to avoid having to explain specifically what can/can't be used.
And you'll never fly alone, neither. Love the cockpit commentary, United has Channel 9 audio for those that enjoy listening in to ATC and cockpit chatter, makes one truly appreciate what goes into seemingly-simple routines.

We also got this in Indonesia but its even more fun. Not only you have the chance to visit the facilities or get full flight commentary or experienced a go around. You will also have the chance to taste a stall, vertical climb, nose dive, 90 degree bank, single engine flight and much more. The best deal is they will pick a lucky passenger to take control of the flight alongside the captain and ask as soon as you land you can ask the stewardess out for a dinner. ;-P
he said it's a behind the scenes day at the airline and they let them use cameras and stuff because it was a special day or something, and I don't think they do that on regular flights
You could smell people`s sweat in the cabin. After the go-around the captain said "think we hit a little squall there, so I`ll have to work for 15 minutes longer today" The secon approach was as bumpy as the first but he did it. I´m not easily scared when flying but this was a crappy experience.
I had to go around on a Lufthansa CRJ 200 going into Stuttgart. In a nightly rainstorm that blew the car mirror of the friends picking me uo at the airport away. We had the worst turbulences I haver ever experienced and I did fly quite a lot because my father used to work for an airline and we could fly cheap. The plane literally rolled into a 90° turn in the final approach.
This happened to me coming into Palma Airport, Mallorca. We got to within 50 feet then shot back up again. we came into a runway used by spanish aircraft only and for some reason we were coming in on it, then i guess we wern't ment to so went ALL THE WAY back up again, took bout 30 mins to get down (on other runway!) but Ryan Air piolet blamed it on wind. Then when we did land we came in to quick and bounced twice!
It happened to me once i was going to madeira from lisbon and it was really windy and rainy, the pilot tryed to land twice and he couldn't land it was to difficult so, we had to go back to lisbon, then about 30 mins later we went back to madeira,we had a more experienced pilot this time and he managed to land!:)
That's all fine and dandy--Try being in this situation for real, and at night--scary as hell--happened to me once in the 90's on an AC A320 in YHZ trying to land in DENSE fog must have been below 200 as the runway lights were VERY close and then the plane just roared and the gear went up--landed at alternate in Montreal..I don't ever want to do that again
The trip was specially organised, so there were 3 captains present on the flightdeck. 2 were flying whilst the third did the commentary over the PA system.
My travel offer experience days for aviation enthusiasts showing what happens behind the scenes at the airline (i.e training) and an experience flight. part of the flight was a planned go-around!
That's great to offer enthusiast flights like that! Are Mytravel the only line to do this? I sense that my national airline (Air Canada)would never consider it.
The camera used for this was a Canon Ixus 55 point and shoot, which has 5mp and a 640x480 recording mode. Apart from the lack of a proper zoom and decent sound, the picture quality isn't that bad. It has been heavily compressed for putting on here though.
It wasn't Easyjet (although it does look like an Easyjet wing tip fence), but was MyTravel before they were taken over by Thomas Cook. And no, they don't usually do commentary like that as this was a special enthusiasts flight.
Yes, it was an intentional part of the trip. We departed from Manchester, flew over to Liverpool where the missed approach took place and then returned to Manchester.
@mustang19ms READ THE DESCRIPTION. How hard is it for people to do that?!

You could smell people`s sweat in the cabin. After the go-around the captain said "think we hit a little squall there, so I`ll have to work for 15 minutes longer today" The secon approach was as bumpy as the first but he did it. I´m not easily scared when flying but this was a crappy experience.

How did you know that the aircraft rolled to 90 degree bank? There is no possible way that someone in a normal passenger cabin can know this.
Jezzbaldwin 3 years ago
I had to go around on a Lufthansa CRJ 200 going into Stuttgart. In a nightly rainstorm that blew the car mirror of the friends picking me uo at the airport away. We had the worst turbulences I haver ever experienced and I did fly quite a lot because my father used to work for an airline and we could fly cheap. The plane literally rolled into a 90° turn in the final approach.

Mine was a real flight by the way Bristol to Palma in August

This happened to me coming into Palma Airport, Mallorca. We got to within 50 feet then shot back up again. we came into a runway used by spanish aircraft only and for some reason we were coming in on it, then i guess we wern't ment to so went ALL THE WAY back up again, took bout 30 mins to get down (on other runway!) but Ryan Air piolet blamed it on wind. Then when we did land we came in to quick and bounced twice!

I think I no what this is, is it a fear of flying course, I saw something similaor on flight level 350, they used a bae 146

That's cool! Now I know what to expect if such an event takes pace.
Boy, those engines really made some noise too!

That is REALLY cool, I would love to have that kind of service, I am sure others would be annoyed.

WOW!! I want to be on one of those flights!! What airline and where? Will they organise a flight like that anytime soon?

Halman2112 3 years ago
It was scary because at the time you probably weren't aware of what was going on...now that you know, it won't be like that anymore :p

The trip was specially organised, so there were 3 captains present on the flightdeck. 2 were flying whilst the third did the commentary over the PA system.
jamesrowson 3 years ago
How do you get the audio of the pilot?
travelplus1 3 years ago
Bah can you not read. The trip was a special trip where the pilot told the passengers over PA what they were doing.

that was great. i was on that plane!!! A321 My travel @ liverpool! great!
tombewick380 3 years ago
why did the plane missed his aproach?
gopussycat 3 years ago
The missed approach was planned....
My travel offer experience days for aviation enthusiasts showing what happens behind the scenes at the airline (i.e training) and an experience flight. part of the flight was a planned go-around!
B757204 3 years ago
That's great to offer enthusiast flights like that! Are Mytravel the only line to do this? I sense that my national airline (Air Canada)would never consider it.

what r the mega pixels of ur cam.? i am thinking of buying 1 5/5 vid
JetlinerXPilotXFSX 3 years ago
The camera used for this was a Canon Ixus 55 point and shoot, which has 5mp and a 640x480 recording mode. Apart from the lack of a proper zoom and decent sound, the picture quality isn't that bad. It has been heavily compressed for putting on here though.
jamesrowson 3 years ago
does easy jet always do the commentary?
mrbeanaswell 3 years ago
It wasn't Easyjet (although it does look like an Easyjet wing tip fence), but was MyTravel before they were taken over by Thomas Cook. And no, they don't usually do commentary like that as this was a special enthusiasts flight.
jamesrowson 3 years ago
Thanks. Was the missed approach intentional or not?
mrbeanaswell 3 years ago
Yes, it was an intentional part of the trip. We departed from Manchester, flew over to Liverpool where the missed approach took place and then returned to Manchester.
jamesrowson 3 years ago
Thanks.

There must still be an airline that still does this how did you book it ?
Were do I go ?

in the USA you are able to tap into air traffic onboard flights. they pipe it into the entertainment headphones.
