@sunderking they didn't volunteer. It was explained in the DLC (Missing Link). They were random people (men too though they aren't seen here) who were abducted by Belltower and taken to an offshore facility where they were experimented on and usually killed. Those that survived and could sync with Hyron were sent to the computers being built around the world. This one being one of them. Even then they often die and the computer runs through them like fuel.

@seberusnet Actually, they did. The drones volunteered to have their spines severed and replaced with cybernetics so they can interface with the quantum computer. As for what the others said, I agree: this really was shocking when I first saw it. Even the part where Hugh Darrow causes augs to go berzerk. My jaw dropped many times during my playthrough. Great game!
