  • i've always loved this song...couldn't believe it was a couple of hot black chics singing it when i 1st saw it...wow, can;t believe i'm this old either!!!

  • Not sure about this, but it seems to me the lesson here is to NEVER sign with WMG. Wankers...

  • love it its funky #

  • Any idea how rare this track is !? Almost impossible.

  • SHE IS BEAUTIFUL!

  • remember stay hip and stay young;)

  • I can hear it. They must have allowed it back.

  • You're a dick.

  • That was the first and (hopefully) last time I hear that.

  • Don't forget the "The Smiths" bite. Let it go good people. This should be free enough for everyone to enjoy. I think these ladies, or this fine group, only had the one hit and are now probably trying to milk it since new ordinances have come forth dealing with the possible prosperity of youtube videos in the past 20 years. They're just scratching for every dollar. No matter. Enjoy while you can...

  • AN UVA 1 i should av remixed!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

  • wmg sucks, think they own the world

  • Great ♫ song ♪

  • Nope. Stick it to The Man.

  • Am I the only person lucky enough to be able to here this song on here?

  • Too bad it's gone but glad i was there in the 80's and 90's going through teenage years and into early 20's. What a time that was!!

  • go fuck yourself WMG - digital rights managment will not work - maybe if you werent so fucking greedy you would soon discover that people are happy to pay for musi - we just object to being ripped off, s you can line your fat cat asshole pockets.

  • To grab this mp3 goto easymp3grab doht cohm.

  • How do you tell when a record company exec is being stupid?

    Theyre breathing.

  • Freaking record label idiots. Why aren't all the labels dead already???

  • Comment removed

  • When I lived in London, Stoke Newington to be exact, I used to see these girls walking along the high street. Great Song and Great Memories. WMG YOU AREN'T SO HIPPY!

  • FUCK WMG.

  • Always loved this song even though back then I was pretty committed to being a guitar totin' rocker. It's simple... but then most brilliant hits ARE simple.... what isn't simple is comin' up with it in the first place!! Thanks to WMG I had to "use my imagination" here. Oh well... that's copyright law I suppose. Nice post regardless!!

  • fuck WMG!

  • If the sounds been removed why not take down the video .. geez. Its keeping crap up that forces youtube to spam us with ads.

  • fuck wmg in tha fkn asssssssss

  • WOW.... WMG...hahahaha talk about dinosaur mentality. All they have to do is get in on the "Google Ads" thing. You know... as the copyright owner, they could EASILY allow you to post this... and then just pound it with ads. That would help alleviate their precious "potential lost revenue" rant. Other copyright owners are doing just that... allowing the posting of copyrighted material... but bombarding the video with ads... which IMO is quite fair. Thanks! ~KK

  • @KennediKingMusic Rave til thy techno beat, ken?

  • So let's see...they will not allow people to post this song on YouTube so that people will go buy the album. Good.

Now we need to ask the question: How many of today's 20 year olds would know what this song sounds like so that they will go buy it? None. How many 40 year olds will buy it today? Again none, most of the people that loved this song back then would have already bought it.

Who is the loser here? Take a guess.

  • I think you've just about summed it up. Can't believe the attitude of WMG. Watch this space when the big 4 become the big 3 or Bill Gates buys them all out with his petty cash. Unbelievable!

  • i just sync'd the utube vid from podmixture's vinyl posted vid to the vid and watched it anyway ,so fuck WMG BUHA HA HA muhfukkas yeeeah boieeee!

  • WMG sucks

  • I quite agree. U think you're doing them a favour as well

  • They jealously guard their music then wonder why it doesn't make money. People need to hear old music to get excited about it. Fools.

  • This video contains an audio track that has not been authorized by WMG. The audio has been disabled. Fuck them....

  • Just FYI, everyone -- WMG puts all their stuff on imeem -- you have to sign up to listen, but it's free -- Not sure if this will post because I mentioned another web site, but it's not exactly a competitor of YouTube. I'm not an agent for imeem or WMG, just found the music I wanted, I can see others are looking for it too, so thought I'd pass this along.

    The Grammar Fairy

  • Allow me to amend what I said two months ago: WMG puts all their stuff on imeem, WHICH THEY OWN A PIECE OF.

    TGF

  • WMG (Wrong, Mostly Gay)

  • LMFAO

  • very very very wrong... UGH. shame on you

  • oh man WMG you idiots!!! what is the point this? there isnt one....kiss my ass

  • they've really not got a clue have they?

  • man - that disabling malarky just about sucks the stains from a tramp's pants

  • Fuck you WMG!

  • This group is about as famous as my penis right now. Disabling audio track = business FAIL.

  • I dont' understand this labels...what the problem in post this video with audio...are they losing money???...WTF

  • Comment removed

  • Great album, great song -- thank you for posting the visuals, even if the audio was removed.

  • fuck you, wmg. if you put up videos, others wouldn't have to.

  • exactly..it's not as tho' I've posted the whole vid. Even members of the band have written in support of me posting it

  • what good is a music video w/out music asswipe!

  • nice job, WMG. Now that you yanked this obscure track from 19 years ago, are you going to post it anywhere?

  • spot on and we know the answer is ...NO

  • @apislapis Yeah exactly how do these idiots think we find the music we have been looking for especially the more obscure stuff from the past. Actually I think this is a plot to keep us focused on the crap music they are pumping out at the present which is over compressed autotuned freaking shit.

  • @bhTDMC Is any track from 20 years ago not obscure?

  • Good job, WMG. Nigh 80,000 YouTube viewers now hate you specifically. It's bullshit like this that really breeds ill will towards record companies. You really wonder why people feel good about file-sharing music? You greedy, petty, DRM-happy bastards. Thank God for the internet and the technological ability for bands to now self-produce. May the digital age grind you to dust.

  • now THAT'S how you curse out wmg assmonkey...popped your thumbs up !!!

  • Amen!

  • "Hippychick" was brilliant, and I`m gutted to see the audio removed. What ARE WMG up to? Cutting off their noses to spite their faces. Dopey dopey dopey.

  • it's quite unbelievable isn't it? It's tantamount to a suicide note

  • Un-fucking-believable! Was this music video broadcast on M-TV? IMO, if a video was broadcast free, then it becomes public domain.

  • YouTube fuck your copyright legal shit

  • fuck everyone..utube sucks with their rules

  • I agree unless it is a movie or full episode I don't see the point its not like the people are selling the music.

  • WMG are a bunch of dumb cunts!!!

A music video is essentially just an advert for the song. I can't believe any sane company removing free advertising in any walk of life. Get a grip you fucking pricks.

  • Just seen this - for what it's worth myself & & the twins, who are still operating as Soho do not approve of the removal of the audio and, in fact, WMG don't own the rights in the UK, so I'm not sure they have the right to ask for its removal at all. It's particularly ridiculous when WMG have just re-released four of our albums around the rest of the world and we need all the promo we can get! Put it back on, youtube!

  • I've had so much positive feedback about hippychick, it's unbelieveable! Also unbelievable that WMG would do such a thing which flies in the face of reason. I'm pleased you feel the way you do, since I loved this song so much I felt it needed including on the global jukebox that is youtube. WMG still fail to see what a marketing opportunity this site is. It's not as tho' this is in HD! I really despair over the quality of judgement of the majors, I remain happy to be UNSIGNED!

  • So WMG wants the audio disabled because it's not "authorized"? Well, WMG can suck it! Great way to build good will for your properties. I already own a copy of the song, so all you've accomplished by disabling the audio is to PISS ME OFF!

  • Pisses me off too mate, as I own a copy of this on 7" single and CD single. Yet again record companies continue to bury their heads in the sand and annoy potential customers. This video is not the complete song and I thought this might encourage others to go and buy a copy of the recording, but oh no. Then the majors wonder why their revenue streams have dried up. As a member of the MU I understand copyright but I've had so many hits on this vid, I thought it might have acted as a flyer for WMG.

  • exactly mate! If i didnt just happen to stumble across you vid....I wouldnt have remembered it as such, or remembered a false impression of it as at the time of release i was young...and thought it was crap....but upon growing up and expanding my horizons i reappraised the song....shame you just alienate your potential customers WMG!

  • Got the 12" single. Great song.

  • "loving you since the miner's strike!" - I love it!

  • One of my all-time favorite songs! I'm probably gonna get flamed for this, but I think it's actually richer than "How Soon Is Now" - which is an important song, but SUCH an emotional drainage I don't really care about it anymore. Thanks for posting this - I had never seen it.

  • hippies FTW

  • CLASSIC

  • Thanks for this video. I have no idea about this song, I heard it on the 80's channel on XM radio one day. Since I know almost every song on there, I was pleasantly surprised to hear this! I absolutely LOVE the chorus! LOL "Won't make love to change your mind, no hippie chick!" Love it! I wish I knew this song "back then"! I had never heard of Soho, any other songs like this?

  • omg.just heard this in matalan and come home to find out who did it,reminds me of trying to pull in the clubs(un-sucesfully)in the 90s.great song.did dee lite do a version?

  • lol

  • wow, this song sounded so much better back then, but back then I was always hammered and trynna pick up girls and dancing at the clubs, it's the only place I ever heard it. yup, it defintely sounded better then :/

    still a cool song!

  • OMFG, haven't heard this song since it was released it feels like LOL

  • Lol. Has anyone noticed how this great song got ripped off by some yank band, to become the base of the theme tune to "Charmed"?

  • Yeah, its total bollox too :(

  • you idiot this song samples how soon is now by the smiths a cover of how soon is now by love spit love is used as the theme from charmed, if you're going to be clever do your homework

  • Comment removed

  • while doing your homework learn to read

  • How about you do your homework. Reading comprehension is a good thing. But to help you out, I will quote gaz for you.

"you idiot this song samples how soon is now by the smiths"

It's the VERY first line in his comment, but you just skipped over it and went straight down the sarcastic smart ass path. He got it right the first time and therefor your failure is epic.

  • Fantastic song great to see it again!

  • For black girls I think they are cool as hell, but are they against hippies? Cause being against a hippy is just wrong, but I do love this song, yhis song reminds me of being much younger, they should have made more songs that were psychedelic sounding.

  • my parents are not against hippies :L

  • how fcking dare they.i know em; the short haired one is kermits sister frm black grape.tried to fight me in town tha dyke loooooooool suuuuuuuuuuuuucks

  • lol, no she's not because she doesn't have a brother called Kermit. She has a brother called George you nitwit.

  • omg i heard this in like 1990 i liked it we used 2 like it i was in a skateboard gang lol the curb crew the days birdie snickers bubba pooky tully riddles erod beast squid sulldogg the pork fried pussy posse lol i dont no why i just spelled this shit but the memories clicked in lol

  • really doesnt get better than this man!

  • Moby - Southside

    sampled

  • This was on The Chart Show (IIRC 2nd February 1991) - and reshown on The Vault in 2009!

  • i could of sworn that some really white "dee-lite" type 90s person was singing it but i guess not. still an awesome song!

  • ....you are thinking of "opus3"...the song was fine day.

  • YOU JUST KEEP GOING.

  • oh yeah, it doesn't get any better than this club jam. AWESOME.

  • THATS what I thinking! I had no idea they were afro-american. In my mind, I totally imagined two caucasian girls with long straight hair dressed like hippies.

  • there not african american, there english lol

one of them stays in scotland now

  • Ohhhhh haha :-D , sorry. Thanks for the correction. BTW So then what is the exact proper terminology? ...Afro-British? Or something else?

  • i dont know but they were born in england :)

  • Shows just how similar our races are...

  • i never new it was a black chick either crazy thats the first thing i said to my gf i thought this was a white singer!

    CRAAAAAAAAAZAAAAAAAAAAAY

  • There were a lot of times where I heard a white person sing and thought they were black, but I have never heard a black person sing and thought they were white.

    ...not until this song.

  • ever hear of Johnny Mathis or Charlie Pride?

  • I was at this video shoot, bull & gate (kentish town) I believe. You can just make out Tanya from Vicious Kiss dancing in the crowd (crazy blonde hair extensions)!

  • 1990 and 15 cutting class at Newtown High School in queens with my asian friends at their house {with"hippy chick" ona loop lol} to go to the village and shop at Rubber sole,UNIQUE,and Andees cheepee always ended up in some other asian kids house or a club in nyc lol.

  • I remember this song! I still have the single cassette ;) It was playing on a preview of '90210' back in 1990 :)

  • The riff you are hearing is otherwise known as "the Bo Diddly beat". Its a 1:4:5 blues progression found in such songs as Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin, Desire by U2, Who Do You Love by George Thoroughgood, etc. In fact, both Hippychick and How Soon is Now sound like samples from the original opening of Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones. This is ones of the most widely used riffs in American Music. The Smiths didn't invent it and don't own it.

  • Good. Finally someone gives the due credit to Mr. Bo Diddly who did this sound back in the 1950s when rock and roll was quite different from what people consider "rock" today.

  • Wow! That bass line is really something!

  • I've heard way more complex and enchanting basslines than this; this ain't nothin. LOL

  • good song.

  • Cheers - Forgot about this 1!!Saw them support JESUS JONES in Glasgow QMC 1990ish.. that was a night...

  • Oh, man. Thank you very much for this! I had forgotten how simple but effective this was. Indeed never a better use of a Smiths song. If possible could you please upload the rest of the ITV Chart Show Top Ten to which this clip belongs? Also have you got the specialist chart as well to upload? Massive thanks if you have. This clip belongs to either 26 Jan 1991 or 2 Feb 1991 edition.

  • I saw these pair of muppets being interviewed. When asked "was this your favourite Smiths song that's being sampled?" they replied "Who are The Smiths?"

    Incredible but true.

  • ooooooooooo i just love song ... xx

  • My favorite part is when they sing, "No hiip, hiip, hiip, hip, hip!"

  • saw them playing live at kingston poly surrey, when promoting this, it was really good. Been glad to hear it again. cheers apislapis

  • Yeah, I admit I found this annoying when it came out ('cause I LOVE that Smiths song) . . . but this really is one of the best examples of sampling put to good use -- and a great song!

  • great band live.they supported jesus jones at rock city in 91.

  • ohhhh jesus jones, gawd i used to fancy that lead singer summin rotten lol

  • So glad this was here - I couldn't remember the proper name of the song and have been dying to hear it again. Great memories, many of them on gone but not forgotten dance floors. The gorgeousness we're allowed to feast on in the video is an added bonus :D

  • Barely the 90s the uk version has hippychick, never trust a hippy mix, happiness is a warm hippy

  • and taxi

  • love going back to the DAY!!!

    blue

  • praised be soho, incognito, the shamen, electronic, njoy and all the other good UK dance acts of the early 90s. It was certainly a good time for dance music

  • Great song! Puts me back to the early 90s when I was 12. Very rarely played, I never knew title or artist, I've heard it recently in Netherlands at the outlet store after so many years and I googled so many times and searched in lyrics engines. But, suddenly, the text "no hip hip hip hip hip" leaded to a result.

  • Love this song takes me back when music was worth dancing too

  • I would recommend the CD called "Goddess" that the song comes from. It's still available. There are several good songs on it. Also, there's a cool song on the flip side of the cassette single. However, I bought another album by Soho and threw it out, I thought it was so bad.

  • I loved the flip side of the (US) cassete single, a track called "Taxi".

  • LOL I think I bought that same album! I got one by them, and it was the worse! I have no idea of what I did with that album.

  • I used to masturbate to this song, ty for posting!

  • ha ha ha

  • thanks 4 sharing that info CosmicMutty....this is probably the BEST use of a SAMPLING ever applied to another song.

  • I am so happy to still be a HIPPY CHICK!!!

  • Great thanks...back to the days.....!!

  • I LOVE this song so much!

  • I loved this song as a teen too. I remeber buying the 12inch about 3 times cause friends would steal it after they claimed they didnt like it!!! It took me years to find this and I just did on limewire a month ago!!WHo just died???

  • Can you put Soho's "Nuthin' On My Mind" up here?

  • Thanx sooo much for posting this! It was a song that my best friend & I would dance to back in the day... she just passed away and this is extremely special to my memories! ;)

  • I LOVE THIS SONG GIRL POWER

  • People are sooo touchy sometimes! Lighten up!

  • It's my mother, aunty and father :)

  • iTUNES doesn't even have this song : (

  • They have it now. Just down loaded it. I'm 35 years old but I can remember hearing this and jamming to it.

  • I thought that this tune came from one of Danielle Dax's albums. Does anyone remember such a song?

  • I thought a white woman sang this! Haven't heard this since I was a teengager! Thank you for uploading! I used to turn this song all the way up in my car going to a party, the good old days!

  • Actually they don't sound black or white.

  • BrooklynGeechee!Me too:)))

  • I've been looking for this song for about 15 years!!!! Thanks!!!

  • me too!

  • As gemêas do SOHO mandaram bem nas paradas de sucesso do mundo todo entrando no top ten americano..e Hippie chick foi sem dúvida uma das grandes canções que fez valer o ano musical de 1992.

  • Takes me back to when music was good - how many times have I heard that Smiths intro wishing it was going to be this song!!!

  • Excellent song, and singer. This song is timeless and classic. Glad I saw this video. I don't think it made the charts, nevertheless, still have a strong favor for the song.

  • Tell me if I'm learning something from YouTube. Is that a GOOD BASS LINE??

  • You mean at the beginning?

    It's a STOLEN bass line.

  • What does that mean? They took it from someone else?

  • it's sample from the smiths "how soon is now." they actually just put funk in it.

  • "Stolen" implies that they took it and used it without permission and / or compensation which is not the case. The Smiths (or probably more to the point, their label) give this the green light. It wasn't stolen.

  • Yes!! I used to play this with a band.

  • One time I saw them at a summer anti-racism gig in Hackney. Not sure what they did to this song, that day, but it was so hard and strident and superb!!! Nothing like recorderd versions I have ever seen/heard...

  • this is an awesome song--the groove is the best. i have it on an album!!!

  • I adored, then realized, I will always dig this tune. It was before it's time and "Soho" should be admired.

  • I actually prefer this to 'how soon is now'

  • I agree. I don't know why, but for some reason I have a strong aversion to Morrisey's voice. There are several Smith's songs that I really like until he starts singing.

  • takes me back

  • I knew neither that they were black nor English. I thought they were...well, long-haired American hippie chicks. :P When I was in high school, the internet was not around to make us aware of such things. Alas, I cannot find Radio Soul Groove anywhere.

  • I thought the exact same thing about the singers (actually I thought there was only one). Did want to point out, though, that the internet did exist. But the worldwide web did not, and the idea of sending any video over the internet was laughable.

  • Thanks for sharing this! An old favorite from long ago. :)

  • Saw them back in about 1992 supporting Jesus Jones (remember them!)in Middlesbrough and as I remember they were quite good. Thanks for this = brings back memories of the old times
