The statue of Nina is beautiful except her hair must be swept higher, like an African Queen wearing a crown, her cheeks should be a tiny bit higher and her the arch of her nose a little slender sort of sweeping up like the crown of hair. She is done so wonderfully here but it is the tiny inflections only she could do in her music that the artist must do with his scapel. She was larger than life, now go on and imagine beyond a photo, feel her like she sang the notes. She invoked beauty always.
I moved to Saluda a few years ago and have been a jazz lover forever. Hoping some of this Nina magic will rub off on me I suppose. Never knew where she was born and it is great to see Tryon the way it used to be and the way it is. Thanks for posting!
Very different interpretation from the original version. In fact, from any version. The original version sounds hopeful. Most other versions sound hopeful and/or retrospective. Nina's version sounds painful. That's Nina. A genius at interpretation.
Glad you like the video. It was my first and is yet my favorite. Hope you can see the Nina Simone sculpture by Zenos Frudakis in Tryon, NC someday, which is what has compelled most all of these videos.
I love Nina with reverance. I say her name as a prayer. The beauty and the truth of her spirit causes me to listen with my head down in respect and awe. As if to see so much at one would overwhelm me.
I had only heard George Benson's version of this song ( which is excellent as well ) up until tonight. I am a bit partial to George's version but don't really care for the scatting at the end.

As good as Nina is-- and here she is as usual oustanding, the outstanding interpretation of this song is by Sarah Vaughan
