If the Republicans manage to do well in the elections, they will claim that they have a mandate from "the American People" to end medicare. The "American People" Boehner keeps referring to are wealthy white people - (non-whites are not really the American People). The GOP HAVE NOT and WILL NOT turn their backs on Ryan's plan. They will whistle and dodge and say things to make you think they would never really end medicare - but they fully intend to.
E. Newt proposes one of the many other solutions and is politically assassinated for it by other Republicans.
Conclusion: Republicans have NOT turned their backs on Ryan's budget - given the furosity of their reaction, they are solidly behind it especially the ending medicare part. Ending medicare is their agenda and their goal, but they can't t tip their hand because it would jeopardize their electability. The need to disguise it..

If the Republicans manage to do well in the elections, they will claim that they have a mandate from "the American People" to end medicare. The "American People" Boehner keeps referring to are wealthy white people - (non-whites are not really the American People). The GOP HAVE NOT and WILL NOT turn their backs on Ryan's plan. They will whistle and dodge and say things to make you think they would never really end medicare - but they fully intend to.

the republican understands that in order to destroy popular government programs so funds from them can be diverted to their industry backers, it is not necassary to outright end them, just ruin them enough that they are no longer popular and then they can convince the people to let them kill that program. the health insurance industry wants your voucher dollars in return for a contract that will severely limit your access to care, forcing you to kill yourself off by not seeking care.

The Ryan plan has already been rejected by the people for being radical, as the GOP found out in their townhall meetings, so Newt going against it isn't exactly a brave move, but more one of expedience in an attempt to appeal to the majority (moderates & independents). What is surprising is how few GOP have followed suit, also repudiating the radical Ryan plan. Their arrogant pride keeps them from admitting that they are still committed to an obviously dead-end path.
