Archie Bunker, after all, DID change over the years: he became less racist, more friendly and a loving grandfather while the meathead became worse. Why was the meathead living in Archie's house in the first place? He could have taken a job and done evening classes. Instead of that he lived of his wife and her parents. Didn't Mike study sociology? That's not even a real science. For Mike it was his own little political hobby. Mike Stivic represents everything I detest in the baby boom generation.
@wrlord Yes, remember that one episode in "All In The Family" when there was no air conditioning in Archie's house and Gloria wore a dark brown bikini?
@wrlord Yes, remember that one episode in "All In The Family" when there was no air conditioning in Archie's house and Gloria wore a dark brown bikini? I bet she was at least a "D Cup."
@eazyegee You're so right about that, particularly since Sally's thighs & think tank butt resembled the back 1/2 of a 1956 Cadillac, I not only thought those cars were big & blobby, they all looked big enough for each & every 1 of their very own landline telephone area codes. As a kid, I'd always "Oinked-oinked!" @ each & every 1 of those cars, I thought they were just horrible. Each & every time 1 of them passed by me, I'd always gone, "Oink-oink, oink-oink, oink-oink, oink-oink!"
Think it was Sally Struthers that got me liking full figured or big women back in the 80's.Course now one out of every three women are plus sized. They should have had Meathead coming back to ask Gloria to forgive him and be part of the show
AT THE END OF THE DAY ARCHIE BUNKER WAS RIGHT BECAUSE HE ALWAYS KNEW MIKE WAS NO GOOD FROM THE BEGINNING AND LOOK IN THE STORYLINE HE ABANDONED HIS WIFE AND SON
@hunnykun101 They decided to give Gloria her own spinoff in the early 80's. It didn't last long, it only had 5 episodes I believe and Mike and Gloria divorced... Which is why Mike wasn't in this show...
This is the most god awful piece of crap ever placed on the air. I'm guessing Mike Post didn't write this kick ass theme song. La la la la. Wow that took hours to write. Ya know what Joey? Theres the unemployment line.
This show was screwed twice...first, CBS rejected the original pilot written by original AITF writers (a pilot in which Carroll O'Connor appeared) and had the WKRP/Growing Pains writers retool what wasn't broken. Then, even though the lesser quality retooling still was in tyhe Top 20 in the ratings in '82-'83, CBS pulled the plug after one season anyways.
@gtz1975 I agree with you on that one - the lady who played Carmen (Florence's replacement on "The Jeffersons") was better as Teresa the Ewing maid on "Dallas." Florence didn't have anyone to bounce off on in "Checking In" like she did with Sherman Hemsley on "The Jeffersons", as Larry Linville was no Sherman!
I heard about this All in the Family spinoff at the now defunct Jump-the-Shark website. Apparently, the Meathead divorced Gloria to live in a hippie commune and she became a single mother. Word has it the show was pretty lame and lasted only a season or so. Thanks for posting this crap-tastic gem!
It was a spin off of sorts. Mike and Gloria ended up getting divorced and Gloria was on her own. I think the show might have made it had they had her still living in Ny city and some of the characters or old neighbors from the All in the family on the show regularly.
The only similarity that I can think of is that both shows feature single mothers raising sons of about the same age. I suppose that it could be argued that although the show came out in the early 80s that it is stylistically like a show from the 70s, but that is a bit of a stretch. The dissimilarities are more striking: No ex hanging around, no live-in brother, etc. It's possible that there were other characters that were like them, but I don't remember much about this short-lived show.
It really wasn't a bad show at all. But it came on at a time when "Archie Bunkers Place" was on it's last legs and they were trying to squeeze another franchise out of it and it wasn't passing with viewers!
I think people missed "the meathead", and weren't buying that he would just pick up and leave his family to live on a commune with a hippie in California.
This actually wasn't a bad show. And it had Burgess Meredith in it: can't be bad. It did decently in the ratings for the one season it aired. Here's a couple of shows that did worse in the ratings their first seasons: M*A*S*H and Cheers. (Cheers ranked 74/74 in the ratings its first season).
Now, of course this show didn't compare to the other two. But my point is, it wasn't that bad.
WELL, All in the Family didn't do well when it first came out, it wasn't until the Summer Reruns when America Discovered Archie. AND Gloria was doomed from the get go, actually Carol O'Connor wanted Sally to use all his production team of writers and whatnots, but Sally baulked and brought in her own, and needless to say, it failed.
It was a cute show. Burgess Meredith was a veterinarian, and Gloria was his assistant. Just not good enough to last more than a season. Wow, this is the first time I've heard that "La, la, la..." theme song since the show was first on!
