Well done... camera mounted well, nice quality. Places like this are depressing. I lived in Kenai Peninsula (mostly Soldotna), Alaska for all but 2 years of my life... the only time I'm ever going back is during June-August. Very depressing there, many people can do anything outside for a good 8 months out of the year due to frigid cold (unless you like winter sports -- get's old after a while), and so they drink themselves to death.... Just sick....
Neat! Thanks for posting :) I discovered this place on Google Earth while quickly "traveling" to the North Pole. I was surprised to see people living here! I think I'd have a hard time living in darkness for so long. Do people get excited to see the sun after so long? (I would!)
wow amazing... it's impressive to see people live in such isolation. not imaginable for someone like me who lives in a big city in germany. i hope i get the chance to visit places like this in my lifetime. how long have you been living there?
The surroundings are beautiful. I'd like to visit that place in my life but for living it seems too extreme for me. I've read that average day temperature in July is 7C. And the dark winter months aren't also very attractive. But I'm sure locals have used with the tough climate there.
But still this palce is fascinating, I'm pretty sure I am going to visit Longyearbyen at some point.
in Longyearbyen the ice is the whole year and hot summers exists or not? I think is better to live in a very very small island in the middle of the mediterranean sea under sicily. at the moment we are still wearing summer clothes and in summer hot temperatures are between 30 to 40 degrees
24h dark from November to February. From February to April it gets gradualy lighter. From April to August we have the midnight sun; 24h light, the sun never goes down. And then from August to November it gets gradualy darker every day.
That's Longyearbyen?! I knew it was small but it's no bigger than the village I was brought up in, I thought I was from a rural place in southern England...
I want to study at UNIS...shame Norway is so expensive...
@GeologyRocks101 You can’t compare Longyearbyen to a town in England or Norway for that matter. It is not the same. Longyearbyen is a metropolis, an oasis, a safe haven in the middle of Arctic! 1000km away from the rest of the world.
iloveicecream719: Thats more piss than i can take without commenting. There are many bars in Longyearbyen, about 5, ranging from discos to british looking pubs. Most people are young, so yes, a lot of youths, depending on what age group you want. I'd say most people are about 20-35. If you go during the summer there will be more youths than if you go during the winter, this is due to seasonal jobs within tourism. Most people however dont work with tourism.
I actually found this place just browsing around Google Earth.... looks very sad... and somewhat familiar...

@TheQuibert No it is nothing sad about Longyearbyen. It is an arctic paradise. at least if you like wild nature, good friends, and cold weather!

DanFrederiksen 4 months ago
@DanFrederiksen Because they're born there/have moved there and it's a nice place.
allfantasticimages 3 months ago
@allfantasticimages nono, it's not a nice place : ) it's an ice desert. extremely hostile to life.
DanFrederiksen 3 months ago
@DanFrederiksen I disagree. The ice and snow are great and it's not particularly hostile.

@8Ho03EdONl1liL I think they are exicited after the long nights. They have a holiday to celebrate the start and the end of the polar nights.
