oh my gawd, soooo cute and sweet!!! poor, silly thing face planted twice <3 I think my fear of macaws has finally faded! ^^- (the best therapy is jumping right in, and I got to hold a BEAUTIFUL blue and gold several times this week!)
I'm looking to get a parrot (a Macaw, either a Harlequin hybrid or a Hyacinth) but I've never had a bird before and I want to make sure I know what I'm getting in to and I have the skills and knowledge to take proper care of one. Any ideas on where I can get materials on this sort of thing, and possibly a Macaw breeder in New England or New York, or maybe Quebec? I understand parrots and especially Macaws are a much greater responsability than a cat or dog so I want to be sure I do it correctly.
@irllcd13 A great way to get an education AND find the right bird for you is to buy a bird from a Parrot Place location - like us. Unfortunately we are in WA state and do not ship our babies. Since I don't know, specifically, where you live so if you want to give me a call I can point you in the right direction. 360.829.6643
@irllcd13 i reccommend because this is your first time owning a parrot that you should NOT rush to macaws, start off with a small or medium size bird, like cockatiels or galahs or lorikeets etc. you NEED experience. they are difficult to responsibly keep.
@irllcd13 I really don't recommend starting with a hyacinth macaw if you've never had any birds before. While I don't mean to say you aren't capable, birds can be very, very different from dogs, cats, or any other animal at all. It's good that you're seeking advice, though. The internet and books are good places to get information, just make sure you read ALOT- as much as you can. Truly though, the best teacher is hands-on experience. Macaws are friends for a lifetime.
@irllcd13 A macaw is a whole lotta bird, and a very long term commitment. They're very social animals and will need a lot of interaction with you. They're also loud, and will make the biggest mess possible out of just about anything. It's also generally harder to travel with birds than with other animals, so keep that in mind.
To be honest, for your first bird, I'd really consider going with something smaller and shorter lived, like a cockatiel or a small conure.
@irllcd13 (continued) They're very personable and fun to work with in their own right, but a bit easier to deal with, and you can get a feel for some of the issues you'll have with a bigger bird.
aaaw bless! not far off flying!!! love how the perch was going along the floor with him, just shows the power those wings can produce.....letting my macaw fly in an office full of paperwork and no paperweights....bad idea (voice of experience)
