GTI = more torque and better start.. the Civic would have caught up further down the road... I have launch control on my Civic Type R but it's still notoriously difficult to get a good launch because it doesn't have LSD... it also depends on tyres and driver reactions...

You are correct, Honda doesn't offer "launch control", however a type R with a Hondata ECU (either a k100/kpro) can have launch control - like my ep3 and the car in this vid (hence the bouncing noise)... either way, due to the lack of low down torque / no traction control / no LSD it is very difficult to get a good launch ;)

Civic being a more revier engine i expect to rev higher at launch but not bouncing it. At such a high rev u'll actually lose power in any car.

the type r will only rev to 5000rpm when in gear with the clutch down... I've got 1 and its a standard feature - what you can hear is NOT launch control and it is in fact the car bouncing of the 5000rpm limiter rather than the higher limit of around 8000rpm.. Also wouldt spin the tires from 1st to 2nd if it was on slicks unless your driving like a retard

The problem with GTIs are that they are the slowest turbos you can get not to mention the rather "mushy" handling I've experienced.The 1/4 mile difference is hardly a couple of tenths between stock manual Golf GTI,Focus ST and Civic Type R.That's why all around the world,the GTIs have to be modified to keep up with other turbo competitors.

Even at track work,the NA Type R embarrasses the GTI.

Quite frankly,the GTI is a little disappointing for a turbo hot hatch.

Civic's flexibility to go fast in real life is about 2 out of 10 among the hot hatch sector. The GTI has 280Nm, GTI edition 30 300Nm, GTI R-line and R32 320Nm, Focus ST 320Nm, and Mazda 3MPS has an insane 380Nm, twice that of the Civic. A civic type-R is frankly a fucked-up hot hatch, because people don't use it in the circuit. The new one is worse with stupid rear spoiler, and after a while in the car you'll realize that the cool-looking multiplex dashboard is as rubbish as a bad cosmetic.

One reason why the civic can never be as good as the GTi in real life is the torque. You won't push your car to the redline everytime you wanna go fast do you? The GTI can easily go fast with a slight tap on the pedal, while the Civic needs to push like crazy, even though in the end the maximum available performance of both cars are about the same. If you roll-start head to head on the highway at the same gear, with 50% more torque the GTI has already won at the moment you start the race.

Type-r's (old shape) are pretty rapid, and redline at unbelievable levels...but have F-All torque. The standard mk5 is pretty poor (old K03s turbo), but...

GTI Edition 30 = 230bhp (K04 turbo, same as S3 & Cupra-R)...Up the boost (remap) and it equals over 300bhp...for an hours work...Then it really is a matter of game over...
