I signed on to Youtube in an attempt to seek out an acoustic version of this song and I expected to find a few hacked attempts if i was lucky, not a guy who absolutely nailed it. Your feel is superb and your accuracy impeccable. I was never the biiggest fan of Bob Weirs song writting, but I'll certainly give him a "moment of genius" on this one. Do you cover "Sossity, You're a Woman" ?
Dude!!!! This is outrageous! You, sir, are one sweet guitaist -
OMG, thank you SO much!!!! And the sidebar to this - proving Bobby was one hell of a guitarist, how dare they turn him down for all those years. Once again, thank you immensely!
You have nailed this song. I've seen others try to play this online but most are all wrong. I've tried to figure this out half-heartedly over the years, maybe I'll sit down with your video and actually learn it correctly. I too do everything by ear and am disappointed with the song books there are always glaring mistakes. I've been in a few Dead tribute bands and trying to replicate Bob Weir is a daunting task. Your video is a testament of just how good a guitarist Bob is - Thanks, great video
Very, very impressive! I can only imagine how many hours it must have taken you to learn this by ear. Truly amazing.. well done! It makes me realise, though, how even more amazing it was for Bob to write such a masterpiece in the first place.
This is my favorite song, by far. You did it so well! How did you learn it? because I have been trying for a while to find tabs or chord charts that sound right and I can't pull it off yet. You clearly have found the best way to do it. whether it be reading sheet music or having an amazing ear for picking out chords.
i learned it by ear which you should always trust over what someone else has written down. I've seen published authentic transciptions (not of this song, but of others) that are chock full of errors. So always trust that ear.
I've never seen a transcription of this at all. Not sure they do 'recorded versions' song books of Dead stuff yet. Maybe some day.
@troubleclef I am a fan of the studio acoustic demo of this song and I do my best to learn everything by ear so that makes it a little more difficult to learn that particular version. Thanks for the motivation. You set the bar pretty high with this one. But now I have this video to study. Have you done "Let it Grow"? I am working on that part for now.
I can spend an entire day on your YouTube page listening to one song after another and never get bored. Your playing is inspired and beautiful, your technique is flawless. Thanks for sharing this music.
I have been messing around with playing GD stuff since around 1969 and it took me over a week to learn as far as 0:33 of this. This guy is GOOD.
Incidentally there is a really good recording of Weir doing a purely acoustic version of this as a demo, issued as an "extra" on the remastered CD of Wake of the Flood. If you are into this song, it's well worth tracking down this demo version.
sigh, Im trying to learn this.... this is great, i just wish you slow down and zoom in on each chord and hammer and slide. cuz its seems very difficult to learn.
you got it right on, fuck i wanna learn!!!!!!!!!! sounds really good tho, i like how it's just the guitar so it stays on the same super smooth plain, without kickin into the whole jam, not that that would suck lol
holy hell man. very rarely will i clap for someone while sitting in front of my computer screen. this is a beautiful version. you did fantastic. i just keep going "yup, yup, ohhhh yup! that's it!". great rendition of my fav dead tune. you are the man!
troubleclef- i've heard the Weather Report a million times before, GD and coverbands, but iyou introduce an entirely different vibe to the song IMO. Can something be folky AND jazzy, simultaneously? Evidently. Sick version bro. A number in your honor.
I'm on your level skill wise and your version is absolutely brilliant. You start to loose your strength 40% into the song as a whole but it is still a brialliant version. Don't loose your focus as the song progresses
40% ..I dont agree.. think he is right on for his own take again he is not trying to be weir... the progression of the song lends to what he is doing.....very tasty !
For a couple of years now your rendition has brought me great joy and solace. Sometimes after a long and difficult day a work, I come home, open your version of Weather Report and feel comforted.. Countless thanks for this creative and heartfelt interpretation... My life has been enriched by your music.
I came across this video a few months back and was showing my wife. Just went to several dead shows, brings back many memories, band is hot but we all miss Jerry still so much. Anyway, this is such a peaceful and beautiful version of this song that I wanted to say that it is truly inspirational the way you play it. Thanks for posting it...
Dude, I just gotta give you some respect. This is a great arrangement, and your taste is impeccable. Plus you have the guts to sing the original bossa nova tunes in portuguese. Nao ha muitos pessoas que tocam musica brasileira e as cancoes dos mortos engraciados!
Awesome, very cool. I always wondered how that was played. I thought maybe on 12 String by Doug Sahmn, do you think Weir played and composed that? Also, do you know Bear?
I learned more about the song after playing and postingit. Apparently it is Bobby playing it. He wrote it (so they tell me) as a sort of warm up, fingerstyle exercise that just evolved into the prelude to the song over time.
The somewhat recent remastered "wake" has a nice extended rehearsal track where Weir is working on this. check it out.
It's a beautiful song. One of my Dead favourites. And it's a real pleasure to watch you playing and puts another slant on it and makes me realise how complex it must be to play something like this. I can't play guitar so I'm doubly impressed. I miss the steel but it's still excellent
bravo, i am quite amazed at your timing and touch... great job.. from a former guitar player... you make me want to pick it up just to learn that song... appreciated from all musicians but dead fans can truly appreciate the time you invested in it......... thanks
hey I was wondering whether or not you figured this out by ear, or if you somehow found the tabs/ sheet music for this. I have been wanting to learn this song since I started playing...let me know
Freakin awesome! This was my favorite Dead song back in the day! you played only the prelude but I think this is way better than all the other preludes I have heard of this song! So cool on Acoustic! I am looking it up to learn right now!
Sorry, I thought that was going to add to the comment about "Wake." Most of favorite GD tunes are from that album, not that I don't care for the rest of their material, but... Eyes, Row Jimmy, and Weather on the same album... Finest stuff, They're all great songs. But to reinforce my earlier point, you rip this song like I could only hope to someday.
i've never seen anyone cover this song so smoothly as you have, its so beautiful! You've managed to make it connect in theory, sound and you emote through your playing very well! bravo! :) i love this song. Wake of the Flood is one of my favorite albums of the Dead.
That is an absolutely beautiful rendition of one of my favorite songs. It honestly brought tears to my eyes. Thank you very much, and besides that you are very talented on the guitar.
Sweet, I was just listening to this today. Your version is easily the Best I've heard apart from the Dead. Great job, do an easy lesson on this so I can play it and I'll die fulfilled!
oh and one thing, at one point (2:43), you play an e major 7 and i think you could substitute that with the E mu major chord (the steely dan chord). I know that its the first chord in let it grow, and it would sound really nice where you're playing the Emaj7. Thanks a lot for posting this, your arrangement is such a perfect tribute to the dead. Keep on making music!
Please!!! More Dead...I think you played that better than Bob...i would love to hear some St. Stephen...or Looks Like Rain...YOU ROCK!!!Peace Brother...Keep it comin'''''''''''
could you possibly tab this? I've been looking for it for ages. I can get everything from your video I suppose but I think it would be awesome if you could tab it, thanks.

how did u arrive at this arrangement?? is this derived mostly from the album version? it seems like a perfect blend of wier and garcias parts and the vocal melody
i just learned the intro part by ear and then did my typical chord/melody job on the rest. Yes, it's from listening to the studio version and hitting the stop button and the rewind button a lot.
that was supposed to be a reply from you saying you wanted to work off wake and blue but it ended up up top, but those are great fingerstyle tunes to work out
i agree. in fact i was messing around with 'crazy fingers'. the tricky bit is to keep the reggae rhythm going while playing the melody parts. but I'll get there!
Dude, you should enter this in the Dead Cover Project!

i just learned the intro part by ear and then did my typical chord/melody job on the rest. Yes, it's from listening to the studio version and hitting the stop button and the rewind button a lot.

cray fingers!! sing me back home !!
dp11issosweet 5 years ago
that was supposed to be a reply from you saying you wanted to work off wake and blue but it ended up up top, but those are great fingerstyle tunes to work out
dp11issosweet 5 years ago
i agree. in fact i was messing around with 'crazy fingers'. the tricky bit is to keep the reggae rhythm going while playing the melody parts. but I'll get there!
