  • Dude, you should enter this in the Dead Cover Project!

  • This is amazing! I've just been using my looper pedal to jam on Let it Grow, but now I think I'll go ahead and learn this part too. Thank you, sir!

  • played this along with the studio album version....insane!!! great work!!!

  • Bliss.

  • I signed on to Youtube in an attempt to seek out an acoustic version of this song and I expected to find a few hacked attempts if i was lucky, not a guy who absolutely nailed it. Your feel is superb and your accuracy impeccable. I was never the biiggest fan of Bob Weirs song writting, but I'll certainly give him a "moment of genius" on this one. Do you cover "Sossity, You're a Woman" ?

  • @LOOKN450

thanks! Ooh, yeah, Sossity is a great song but i haven't played it thus far. cheers.

  • man, that was sweet...been working on this for a while....maybe you could do a tutorial of the first 8 measures or so...thx...

  • When i see people like u playin i just put my guitar aside

  • Stunning. 13 people accidentally missed the "likes" button!

  • sweet!!!! thank you for sharing!

  • nice job

  • wow

  • Dude!!!! This is outrageous! You, sir, are one sweet guitaist -

OMG, thank you SO much!!!! And the sidebar to this - proving Bobby was one hell of a guitarist, how dare they turn him down for all those years. Once again, thank you immensely!

  • You have nailed this song. I've seen others try to play this online but most are all wrong. I've tried to figure this out half-heartedly over the years, maybe I'll sit down with your video and actually learn it correctly. I too do everything by ear and am disappointed with the song books there are always glaring mistakes. I've been in a few Dead tribute bands and trying to replicate Bob Weir is a daunting task. Your video is a testament of just how good a guitarist Bob is - Thanks, great video

  • I think bobby is one of the best . I suprised he's not more well known outside the circle. Good job man. I love this song

  • you are the man!!

  • Very, very impressive! I can only imagine how many hours it must have taken you to learn this by ear. Truly amazing.. well done! It makes me realise, though, how even more amazing it was for Bob to write such a masterpiece in the first place.

  • @74mpaul

    Bob's the man. thanks.

  • You completely nailed the intro, note for note. I love the way you worked the melody into the verses. Great job.

  • very nicely done

  • could you do a lesson on this? that would be awesome

  • Thank you for this.

  • this is such a beautiful tune good post B

  • This is my favorite song, by far. You did it so well! How did you learn it? because I have been trying for a while to find tabs or chord charts that sound right and I can't pull it off yet. You clearly have found the best way to do it. whether it be reading sheet music or having an amazing ear for picking out chords.

  • @jollyranchero

i learned it by ear which you should always trust over what someone else has written down. I've seen published authentic transciptions (not of this song, but of others) that are chock full of errors. So always trust that ear.

I've never seen a transcription of this at all. Not sure they do 'recorded versions' song books of Dead stuff yet. Maybe some day.

    thanks!

  • @troubleclef I am a fan of the studio acoustic demo of this song and I do my best to learn everything by ear so that makes it a little more difficult to learn that particular version. Thanks for the motivation. You set the bar pretty high with this one. But now I have this video to study. Have you done "Let it Grow"? I am working on that part for now.

  • Beautiful!

  • fantastic

  • this is my favorite video

  • Damn dude. amazing

  • Wow......

  • I can spend an entire day on your YouTube page listening to one song after another and never get bored. Your playing is inspired and beautiful, your technique is flawless. Thanks for sharing this music.

  • @untalentedclod

well i don't know about 'flawless'. :D but, i appreciate the vote of confidence.

  • Wow, nice arrangement.

  • @boseffis

    Bob.

    thanks

  • Ok so now when can we expect Sage & Spirit? LOL great job.

  • WOW that's it just WOW!!

  • amazing job

  • AWESOME JOB!!! Please post more...

  • How the hell is this not 5 stars?

  • Fantastic - thanks for posting. I have always loved Bobby's skills on the guitar.

  • OMG :_)

  • still my favorite after all these years...would love to hear some more dead..thanks for the music

  • this is great

  • I am in AWE! That was the most moving rendition of that song I've ever heard. It was spiritual. Thank you, you have an amazing talent!

  • thanks!

  • I have been messing around with playing GD stuff since around 1969 and it took me over a week to learn as far as 0:33 of this. This guy is GOOD.

Incidentally there is a really good recording of Weir doing a purely acoustic version of this as a demo, issued as an "extra" on the remastered CD of Wake of the Flood. If you are into this song, it's well worth tracking down this demo version.

  • Great Job!

  • i know it's complex but perhaps a few segments to get it all???

  • MANN!!!!! please please PLEASEEEEE make an instructional vid!!!!!! this is the more accurate sounding version i've found, truly beautiful

  • sigh, Im trying to learn this.... this is great, i just wish you slow down and zoom in on each chord and hammer and slide. cuz its seems very difficult to learn.

  • you got it right on, fuck i wanna learn!!!!!!!!!! sounds really good tho, i like how it's just the guitar so it stays on the same super smooth plain, without kickin into the whole jam, not that that would suck lol

  • This is my favorite song and you nailed it. Thank you.

  • I still get off on this version..Very enjoyable. Played extremely well....Thanks for posting.

  • holy hell man. very rarely will i clap for someone while sitting in front of my computer screen. this is a beautiful version. you did fantastic. i just keep going "yup, yup, ohhhh yup! that's it!". great rendition of my fav dead tune. you are the man!

  • thanks!

  • dude, do "let it grow"! i know you know that if you know this!!! please please please! :D just make it a like a 2 or 3 minute condensed!

  • troubleclef- i've heard the Weather Report a million times before, GD and coverbands, but iyou introduce an entirely different vibe to the song IMO. Can something be folky AND jazzy, simultaneously? Evidently. Sick version bro. A number in your honor.

  • What an excellent version! Nice jazzifications and classical coloring. Great touch.

  • I'm on your level skill wise and your version is absolutely brilliant. You start to loose your strength 40% into the song as a whole but it is still a brialliant version. Don't loose your focus as the song progresses

  • He who speaks without modesty will find it difficult to make his words good.

  • 40% ..I dont agree.. think he is right on for his own take again he is not trying to be weir... the progression of the song lends to what he is doing.....very tasty !

  • Sir, u did it perfect... respect.

  • Beautiful! What a great version of this sweet composition. Thanks!

  • So glad you posted this song and what a cool guitar you're playing it on, it has such a nice tone - well played.

  • thanks. yeah that guitar's a beaut.

  • Such a warm tone.

  • AAAHHH i can't stop coming back to this video...is it so bad?! :-)

  • For a couple of years now your rendition has brought me great joy and solace. Sometimes after a long and difficult day a work, I come home, open your version of Weather Report and feel comforted.. Countless thanks for this creative and heartfelt interpretation... My life has been enriched by your music.

  • I really appreciate it, rjjeffery. cheers. long live the Dead.

  • I came across this video a few months back and was showing my wife. Just went to several dead shows, brings back many memories, band is hot but we all miss Jerry still so much. Anyway, this is such a peaceful and beautiful version of this song that I wanted to say that it is truly inspirational the way you play it. Thanks for posting it...

    -C

  • thanks

  • thats really awesome man. Mad props.

  • Flawless. great song and performance.

  • Simply amazing version of a beautiful song.....

  • wow!!!!!!!!!! thanks brother

  • Dude, I just gotta give you some respect. This is a great arrangement, and your taste is impeccable. Plus you have the guts to sing the original bossa nova tunes in portuguese. Nao ha muitos pessoas que tocam musica brasileira e as cancoes dos mortos engraciados!

    Cheers to you my friend.

  • thanks, man

  • Awesome, very cool. I always wondered how that was played. I thought maybe on 12 String by Doug Sahmn, do you think Weir played and composed that? Also, do you know Bear?

  • I learned more about the song after playing and postingit. Apparently it is Bobby playing it. He wrote it (so they tell me) as a sort of warm up, fingerstyle exercise that just evolved into the prelude to the song over time.

The somewhat recent remastered "wake" has a nice extended rehearsal track where Weir is working on this. check it out.

  • It's a beautiful song. One of my Dead favourites. And it's a real pleasure to watch you playing and puts another slant on it and makes me realise how complex it must be to play something like this. I can't play guitar so I'm doubly impressed. I miss the steel but it's still excellent

  • bravo, i am quite amazed at your timing and touch... great job.. from a former guitar player... you make me want to pick it up just to learn that song... appreciated from all musicians but dead fans can truly appreciate the time you invested in it......... thanks

  • Awesome!

  • This is fantastic.

    Favorited and 5/5.

  • thanks, Rik

  • I am a fan...

  • wat kind of strings do u have I barely here any string noise wen u change frets

  • daddario phosphor bronze extra lights or custom lights on the steel.

  • hey I was wondering whether or not you figured this out by ear, or if you somehow found the tabs/ sheet music for this. I have been wanting to learn this song since I started playing...let me know

  • I learned it by ear but don't have anything written down. Cheers. thanks for watching.

  • Dip me in LSD and let me just hang out with you for a few days. haha amazing.

  • Freakin awesome! This was my favorite Dead song back in the day! you played only the prelude but I think this is way better than all the other preludes I have heard of this song! So cool on Acoustic! I am looking it up to learn right now!

  • it's not better than Bob. But i try. I wish i could do the whole thingle. pretty much my favorite dead song.

  • Sounds stunning. Great job. I love listening to the acoustic version on the remastered cd. This is just as good.

  • Sorry, I thought that was going to add to the comment about "Wake." Most of favorite GD tunes are from that album, not that I don't care for the rest of their material, but... Eyes, Row Jimmy, and Weather on the same album... Finest stuff, They're all great songs. But to reinforce my earlier point, you rip this song like I could only hope to someday.

  • and don't forget "stella blue"!

  • i've never seen anyone cover this song so smoothly as you have, its so beautiful! You've managed to make it connect in theory, sound and you emote through your playing very well! bravo! :) i love this song. Wake of the Flood is one of my favorite albums of the Dead.

  • thanks. "Wake" is my favorite GD album, by far.

  • Ditto! Great work again!

  • That is an absolutely beautiful rendition of one of my favorite songs. It honestly brought tears to my eyes. Thank you very much, and besides that you are very talented on the guitar.

  • Better than Bob!!!!!

  • well..i dunno about that. but thanks.

  • Sweet, I was just listening to this today. Your version is easily the Best I've heard apart from the Dead. Great job, do an easy lesson on this so I can play it and I'll die fulfilled!

  • Thank you for sharing your amazing gift and this beautiful arrangement. That was a moving rendition. Five stars, shared and favorited.

  • nice..still my favorite video on youtube...

  • Very nice, this is one of my favorite Dead songs.

  • Oh yes please allmighty guitarlord tab this down. I want to be able to play this for my girlfriend;)

  • oh and one thing, at one point (2:43), you play an e major 7 and i think you could substitute that with the E mu major chord (the steely dan chord). I know that its the first chord in let it grow, and it would sound really nice where you're playing the Emaj7. Thanks a lot for posting this, your arrangement is such a perfect tribute to the dead. Keep on making music!

  • so good... if you could tab this i would be forever in your debt.

  • thanks a kajillion! more dead?!

  • wow u are amazing....I love the way how u play the guitar...it´s so beautiful....AMAZINNNNNNNG....

  • Where was this internet 35 years ago when I first picked up a guitar? I just want to thank you. You don't know how many of us hack guitar players watch this stuff, get inspired, and end up playing too late into the night because someone as kind as you posted a piece. Here's to musicians that share the magic they have in their fingers with those of use who dream of the magic. Thanks again.

  • thank you. really glad you got inspired.

  • wow! your really good!

  • very nice!!

  • thats my favorite dead song and u nailed it

  • wow i like! Its so beautiful

  • Very good! You nailed it! I love that song. It's too bad the band never played it .

  • very nice :-)

  • Wow. Wish I could play the guitar. =D

  • You're amazing! That was extremely beautiful to hear. Absolutely perfect.

  • very inspirational.. thanks

  • I sure do want to thank you for posting this. I have been progressing in my playing for the past couple of years. This visual has really been helpful. Almost there...

  • how did u arrive at this arrangement?? is this derived mostly from the album version? it seems like a perfect blend of wier and garcias parts and the vocal melody

  • i just learned the intro part by ear and then did my typical chord/melody job on the rest. Yes, it's from listening to the studio version and hitting the stop button and the rewind button a lot.

  • phenomenal. dead solid perfect

  • That was very pleasing to hear. thank you.. beautiful sone and you nailed it..

  • this guy did all his homework...and then some

  • i'd like to see sage and spirit....what kind of guitar is that? sounds beautiful, looks it too.

  • Beautiful.

  • I used to think I played that pretty well. You blow me away. You are seriously good.

  • Pristine....maybe some Terrapin Station?

  • Amazing work. Love the Dead! Any chance you'll do a few more?

  • i'd like to do something else maybe from the same album, maybe something from 'blues for Allah'.

  • cray fingers!! sing me back home !!

  • that was supposed to be a reply from you saying you wanted to work off wake and blue but it ended up up top, but those are great fingerstyle tunes to work out

  • i agree. in fact i was messing around with 'crazy fingers'. the tricky bit is to keep the reggae rhythm going while playing the melody parts. but I'll get there!

  • yea youre quite talented the tricky partfor me is the whole song haha
