Remember Sobibor, interesting name. I do know know of what happened there, too few people do. Anyway, it is my understanding, not knowledge, that this song refers to the ferryman who takes one across the River Styx into the afterlife according to some mythologies, just what I've heard

I actually saw Chris Deburgh in concert soon after this song came out. If you were familiar with his work, then you would know that many of his songs are based on classic literature, fables, myths and the bible. He is an inspired song writer and a brilliant musician.
