  • Must be missing something where is Tom Baker?

That could be anyone under that hud

  • My brother sent this to me and asked if I remembered it, and it only sparked a hint of a memory. But I do love this song!

  • Lol!! Bad Fairy! ^^

  • lol

  • Cool song & Tom Baker as the Ferryman is totally awesome.

  • I like old songs but this one is just strange. Oh well it helped me with my Archetypes homework XD

  • charon the ferryman and the ricer Styx, old greek/roman legenb (thats why you put pennies on dead ppls eyes, to pay the ferryman)

  • Has anyone ever figured out what this song is about.

  • Remember Sobibor, interesting name. I do know know of what happened there, too few people do. Anyway, it is my understanding, not knowledge, that this song refers to the ferryman who takes one across the River Styx into the afterlife according to some mythologies, just what I've heard

  • The lesson of Sobibor is the power of resistence. I think this song is an allegory i don't think it's about death per se

  • At Sobibor something like 200,000 Jews were gassed. The duly elected government had decided, by law , that they had no right to Life or Liberty. 600 of them in the Labor camp chose to exercise their God-given right to defend their lives & freedom ( contrary to the law ) by killing most of their S.S. gaurds and storming the wire. Over half of them died while forcibly demanding their rights to Life and Liberty.

  • @RememberSobibor the one bright point was how the imprisoned Soviet soldiers helped the Jews, have to chalk one up for the Russians for that one.

  • BINGO!!!

  • Didn't realize all these years that this was the same guy who sings The Lady In Red.

    What a contrast of songs.

  • I personally love this song but this video is kinda cheesy and could be made better

  • He ran off with his kids nanny , the bounder

  • good song great singer...everything is on you tube even drumit1 and his or hers opinion....if it is crap to you I will be willing to bet you dont sing or play an instrument..and if you do ...I bet you dont do it this well....

  • i thought i was the only one who remembered this, absolutely love this one.

  • Tom Baker as the Ferryman made this song & video the coolest song Chris DeBurgh has ever done.

  • i LOVE this song.

i was in my dad's friends car and he had this on cassette. he gave me it as a gft. he then died two years later.

  • This song and video came out in the spring of 1983....brings back so many good memories.

  • The song came of his album The Getaway in 1982 not 1983, sorry

  • me and my mate cranked this song on the north QLD jardine river ferry. classic

  • That ferryman is a robbing slag.

  • Love The Man. Top Song

  • awesome song!!!

  • Was traveling along the St. Croix River last weekend that borders WI/MN where ferries operated in times past. Such a fitting song that is a classic.

  • It's like Cream's White Room. You wait in this place where the sun never shines, where the shadows run from themselves. Same deal, end of your life, and it sucks!! In the movie Niagara, Niagara the final scene, when Seth gets ready to jump over the falls, Robin Tunny is already dead, they play a song " not alone" by Patty Griffin, so sad but true... it makes you appreciate that TODAY, you are still alive

  • I love this song. I don't even know why, it's just great to hear it.

  • i was on his concert 4 days ago-amazing. he did'nt cange a bui, still one of the gratest. indestructable ,unforgettable :)

  • klassik 80's mtv vid .....missing the good ol days & real mtv!!!!!

  • This was the first Chris Deburgh video I ever saw and I fell in love with it. This remains my favorite Chris Deburgh song ever! It's so great to see it again. In this age when MTV doesn't play music videos anymore, it's so great to be able to come on here and see these old songs again.

  • lol this is epic, love the vocals and chessy electro tunes

  • wow this brings me back...

  • I'm going to see him next Monday, got my sister tickets for her Birthday...this reminds me of being a kid and she always had his record on.... :)

  • this song reminds me of others in its era eg moonlight shadow, they didn't mean much to me at the time , but they are timeless now , with powerful messages.

  • lol.. Close your eyes and listen!! So great! :)

  • Gives me goose bumps.

  • MY father and I love this song.. great song !!!

  • Great song!!! Have not heard in ages!!!

  • Funny thing is all Chris D.gets remember for is the song " Lady In Red " .To me this is a better song and it came out 1st.

  • listen to the story, not just the sound, its a life long lesson, that gives me goose bumps, but lady in red does too

  • omfg i love this song!!

  • No Waiiiii

  • Ahh, the kids love the Chris De Burgh...

  • if you dont pay the ferryman you will stay in limbo

  • saw him in Halifax a few years back. Missed the encore, don't pay the ferryman, because I got a call on my cell about some guy with coke bottle glasses stealing shopping carts from my mall:- Gary the mall cop

  • very mystical in ways otherworldly

  • I remember when this video came out; many a "Doctor Who " fan swore blind that the man in the cowl, whose toothy grin appears in a flash toward the end, was Tom Baker.

But of course it was Chris.

  • The ferryman is Tom Baker.

  • And to this day, folks, there are those who still hold to the notion that it was Tom Baker.

Incidentally, he will finally, after an absence of 15 years, be reprising his role of the Fourth Doctor in a brand new audio series. :-)

  • Really? That will be one to not miss! He was always my favorite Dr. Who.

  • Yours and a lot of people's. He did do some commercials in Australia as the Doctor, but those of course weren't BBC-produced.

  • brent, don't pay the ferryman "until he gets you to the other side." You didn't tell her right

  • WOW! This guy is incredible.

  • don't do it. don't do it.

  • I actually saw Chris Deburgh in concert soon after this song came out. If you were familiar with his work, then you would know that many of his songs are based on classic literature, fables, myths and the bible. He is an inspired song writer and a brilliant musician.

  • I always think of this song when my daughter was about to die and i whispered it to her...and she didnt die when she was meant too

  • that's some strong cheese. The only thing missing is some midgets trampling on the Stonehenge.

  • Comment removed

  • Looks kind of like Davy Jones. Sounds kind of like Meatloaf.

His daughter was Miss World 2003

  • awsom its amazing this guy

  • he's so funny&random..dont pay tha ferry man..rite.??

  • My first exposure to this song was a record of my older sister's. I LOVED it, and still do. There was (and still is) something so magical/mystical about the "story". A man setting out on a great adventure...It has always stuck with me.

  • MTV CLASSIC

  • kool song

  • People forget that this was his first hit not "Lady In Red"

  • touche, not many people know that.

  • Damn, I loved this song as much as I hated "Lady In Red" four years later, LOL. Who would have thought the same guy sang both songs? This is one of those great songs that has gotten forgotten along the way by most people. :-(

  • Er....um.....I have this song...... on a .45..... thats a record. That plays on a record player....nvm, most of you wont understand.

  • Ur not alone on that one, I have it on .45 also.

    Damn I feel old!!!!!!

  • I have it on 8 track. LOL

  • I have the ALBUM!!!! Kids today don't know what they're missing... ;p

  • o rly

  • yeah, de burgh is NOT the best. at all. i mean hes good but no where near the best

  • demonhunter are you a fag? The best by far ? What a tool ! Who's the best 90's band Milli Vanilli? Your a queer!

  • are you looking for a fag? You seem to very concerned with who's gay.... do you need a date for the plumber's ball?

  • Chris De Burgh is amazing.. best artist from the 80's by far!

  • Right. Much better than Metallica, Dio, Megadeth, Anthrax and Iron Maiden, all of whom are still performing and rocking harder than Thor's balls in 2009.

    Randy

  • Well, no need be be all indignant. Just opinions, right? Anywho, I like this song, but don't much care for Chris' other stuff, unfortunatly...

  • Great song. Please keep in mind, however, that while you must pay the ferryman at some point-Chuck Norris gets paid to ride the ferryman's boat!

  • Excellent!

  • At 3:19, that's Dr. Who! (Tom Baker)

  • Tom was the best Dr

  • 2.38, gettin down.

  • Thanks for posting !!! Great 80's song

  • Great video first time I saw this was in bootcamp at Lackland AFB in August 83. Also did anyone see on VH1 this weekend where they had Chris De Burgh as a one hit wonder?

  • 2 hits!

Also 'Lady in Red' I think

  • As you can see Chris De Burgh sings a lot about anything with ships or sailing. I heard he always interested in sailing or the waters

  • this song has no closure. O.K. I wont pay...now im on the other side, its time to settle up, any advice on 'tipping' the ferryman. Can i get a ferrypass so i dont need to fix a price evertime

  • LOL!

  • I haven't seen this video in YEARS! I always loved this song,

  • great song and great memorys from it. . when me and me friends had sleep overs we would sit up and watch night tracks (way better then mtv) this song always showed up, one of my fave of all time.

  • this song wasnt 1989, im sure it was more like 1982

  • I'm pretty sure it was between '82-'84. And when MTV still played music, this was one of the vids that got played over and over. But that's okay, I still love this song. And even like it better than 'lady in red'.

  • 1983.

  • No offence to Chris but I never would have guessed he sang this song after knowing him for Lady in Red,

  • I agree, I had no idea until I heard it one night on the radio on one of those 80's programs.

  • I can't believe I found this song!! I have been looking for it forever too!!

  • I've been looking for this for years! Great thanks to the uploader!

  • Anyone have the original MTV version of the video where you can hear someone reading "The Tempest" in the background?

  • WERE DID YOU GET THIS?????

  • great song

  • kick ass song

  • Check out the cover by Domain.

  • btw way what a set of lungs Chris has ;D!

  • ONE OF MY FAVE 80'S SONGS ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Sorry, but you are dead wrong. This was written by Chris de Burgh and isone of his most famous songs. Maybe you've got it mixed up with another roxy music song. Cheers

  • Teeth & Curls- That WAS Tom Baker @ the end!

  • I think you could be onto something, there is definately a likeness there... :-D

  • SILVERBACK1972..if you had any sense you would know the song was about the legand of the ferryman on the river stix in hell. and he brings people half way and then gets the money and trows them off. so no i wouldnt call that obvious would you

  • I thought I was the only person who got that, nice observation berrier

  • And when the rain came down

He heard a wild dog howl

  • Don't pay the ferryman

    Don't even fix a price

    Don't pay the ferryman

Till he takes you to the other side...

    Memories!

  • cool

  • I remember seeing him play this live on Saturday Night Live. It was great live.

  • yup

  • totally amazing - always loved Chris de Burgh, and Lady in Red may have been one of his biggest "hits" but it sure wasn't his best song! Listen to Spanish Train or A Spaceman Came Traveling... or so many others. incredible voice.
