Its interesting to see Les's development as a survivor throughout his series. This episode demonstrates his early mistakes so well. By season 2 though, he's much less accident prone. Poor guy is still pretty bad at fishing though, even at the end of the third season :-/

I've never watched this guy before, and i'm not impressed. He's either playing dumb, or he's really dumb. He makes a little bit of a shelter, runs off doing stupid shit, the sun goes down, he freezes, builds a little more shelter the next day, fucks around, freezes. Just spend 5 hours making a good shelter and you won't need as much food or firewood. His lack of knowhow is killing him. He should have experimented at home with the lily roots instead of waiting until he's in the arctic.

I don't get why he's acting like this is the worst thing that's ever happened to him. Surely he meant to get stuck. He needs a long fire parallel to his shelter, not in it and I'm not convinced his shelter is water proof and why did he sleep in the open after already getting wet? He needs to bury the roots in hot ash, rock boiling will take an age. I also didn't really need to see his arse. I think he knows more than he's letting on and I'm not convinced he's alone either, not that it matters.

While I think he is better than Grylls, I am not overly impressed. He really struggled with the bow drill. He made the shelter too close to the fire. This is the 2nd time I have seen him start his shelter on fire.

He almost crushed his fingers trying to make a figure four deadfall. Also, he would have been better off with a Pauite deadfall, there's enough natural material there for the cordage.

However, still far better than Man vs Wild; that show offers little reality.

Survivorman has said that it actually is the two daily phonecalls to his mom that keeps him alive. Somtimes his mom is calling him on the phone, and as he says thats an extra bonus and it warms my heart when she does that, but we have to be careful so the security group not will get mad at me.

Well survivorman does always carry a mobilephone or phone-radio, so he can get in touch with the security-group. It is said he actually is calling his mom on the phone every day, just so she can feel that he actually is fine. There was one day where his mom called him and the security group couldnt get in touch with him because of that, so therefore they have told him he has to make it short and only at 12.00 midday and 22.00 evening.

Oh this is the time he was talking about when he was doing Survivor Man Stranded Summer. He mentioned in that episode that he tried to roast the roots and they were terrible. Later found that boiling them was far better in Stranded Summer.
