@mikelheron20 jesus didn't actually ever talk about hell. there was no such place even conceived of in jesus time/place. the word "sheol" was mistranslated to "hell" in those verses which doesn't mean "hell" it actually means "grave." jesus was not alluding to hell he was alluding to death, or "spiritual destruction."
and indeed, if God is what is truly real then the absence of God is what is unreal, and to turn away from God is to choose spiritual destruction (back into dust.)

@mikelheron20 You must also, surely, be aware that the word Gehenna also occurs in the NT. Both Sheol and Gehenna are translated in the King James Bible as "Hell". Gehenna has the connotation of fire - Sheol is more about darkness and separation. Both, however, are about eternal punishment. The differences are academic and are incompatible with the notion of a loving God.

If you had never heard of hell and you read that passage you could interpret it in any number of ways. But having heard of the concept of hell, you fill in the blanks in your mind and assume that's what he was talking about. That's probably where the concept evolved from later, but there was no such concept in Jesus' time.

@mikelheron20 jesus didn't actually ever talk about hell. there was no such place even conceived of in jesus time/place. the word "sheol" was mistranslated to "hell" in those verses which doesn't mean "hell" it actually means "grave." jesus was not alluding to hell he was alluding to death, or "spiritual destruction."
and indeed, if God is what is truly real then the absence of God is what is unreal, and to turn away from God is to choose spiritual destruction (back into dust.)

Gehenna has the connotation of fire - Sheol is more about darkness and separation. Both, however, are about eternal punishment. The differences are academic and are incompatible with the notion of a loving God.

If you had never heard of hell and you read that passage you could interpret it in any number of ways. But having heard of the concept of hell, you fill in the blanks in your mind and assume that's what he was talking about. That's probably where the concept evolved from later, but there was no such concept in Jesus' time.

And I have no trouble understanding anything as I learn quickly and competently. Probably has something to do with my IQ.
