There's no preparing for an oral examination. The best thing to do is just play it by ear and hope for the best.

With all due respect, and I'm sure you are a teacher as well, but playing it by ear is never good advice. If I did that in a job interview I might not even remember my own name. You could argue that there's nothing to prepare there either, but practicing doing something anxiety-inducing enhances performance every time.

I'm just back from my CPE oral exam and I can tell you that there was no predicting what the topic of the interview would be. But I agree with you that some general advice can be useful, especially those related to "anxiety management", if you like. Of all the tips you give on this video, the one I think is the most important is "don't pause a lot" > It's preferable to blurt out whatever crosses you mind than pausing on every other word!

Thank you for including this! I am a certified examiner and I can tell you that pausing is actually a criteria used to score the exam! I have always felt, as a slow speaking Southern woman, that this is extremely unfair, but I have to penalize pausers because that is the rule. Yes, blurting out is annoying to me an examiner, but I must reward speakers for doing it.

On the speaking test exaniners look for grammatical mastery of a few specific forms. If the speaker has a strong accent and the examiner can't understand them, there is no way to determine the level. However, most examiners are above average in understanding accents, and proficiency in the language will be reflected in other sections.
