Love the set up! This is exactly what I want to do! I am so confused about people saying Box Turtles don't need water. So, I think they do! I rescued a Red Eared Slider and this Box Turtle (Which they said was a Tortoise). They were in the worst condition, working with shell rot on the box turtle and just got a Spiny Soft Shell ( So Cute). What did you use to separate the two sides, so the water doesn't creep over to the terrarium side?
Very nice! my box turtle loves the water...he has about 6in of water in his tank pond. he is always in there and usually all the way under. i also have fish in there that he eats. they are guppies and keep having babies so he always has food. nice job!
No there not, but I put that in my tank so they could soak and drink anytime they want instead of waiting on me there in a bigger tank now with the same concept but I put my own feeder fish in there they actually try to get them there eating them but I've never seen them.
Hi VONNYYAY, The best bedding options for box turtles are: __Sphagnum Peat Moss (from pet store NOT from garden store)__, __coconut hulls (such as bed-a-beast)__, and of course dirt, leaves and grass (easiest for outdoor enclosures though). Good luck with your turtle!
i use to put my turtle in bedding like hay bedding for rabbits...but i have a feeling it is doing no good...i rlly dont wanna lose him so can u please help me with the bedding? or give me some tips please thank u
Question: How do you keep the water clean? I can see it's set to recirculate through a filter, but box turtles make BIG messes that I'd think a regular filter couldn't handle. I'd like to set up something like this but keeping the water clean is the only thing I can't figure out yet.
DUDE! ur turtle is going to drwon look at it. BOX TURTLES ARE LAND TURTLES. That's probabaly how the other one died. Yeah they like to drink water but dint give them half a tank full.
@DBDshow12 box turtles can still swim in fact if you put them in a pool of water they float. you can give them a lot of water to swim in they just have to have a way of getting back in land like a ramp. in the wild box turtles will swim once or twice a day to get moisture on their tough skin and also to get rid of parasites.
do you need to clean out the dirt/soil you use as their land? can you use rocks or sand instead of soil for their land? how much did this whole setup cost ya? also are you using UV lighting or w/e they use? how do you keep the water warm enough? lots of questions lol
Help Me!!! My box turtle just laid eggs. Shes been stepping on them and I dont now what to do or how to?!?!? help plz. what do I do. Can i take them out?
@finbutters1 if it is under water take them to dry land, if not pretty sure you can leave where they are, inless you are attempting to get rid of them then you can take em out.
My box turtle just laid 3 eggs shes stepped on 1 already and the other one is dented. I wanna take the eggs out but I dont now what to do or how to. Please help me
man this is a NICE tank bro.....im 16 and i've wanted turtles 4 4ever but my mom doesnt let them butt ill pay 4 then with my next check and by a tank and all great video
@mheavy87 ummm they eat alot of meat such as crickets meal worms stuff like that and mine love Fruit any fruit really favorites are watermelon and strawberries i do sometimes take alot of fruit and mix it together in to kind of a blend and add a calcium supplement to help there shells and there bones
@chippythedog yeah its just a regular filter and i have the tank bulit up so the land is above the water and the water cycles and flows down the rocks and under the the land its built on egg crate
@THEMAGICMAN28 a regular water dish if fine for them to drink out of just one you can pick up at like petsmart for a red ear slider you need a full aquatic setup with a turtle landing if you get a canister filter no need to clean the water every week
i just got 2 land turtles about 3 days ago and i put them in a tank but i dont know what kinda enviroment they need to live in can u give me some advice cuz i am really new to this so i need to know plz
@ArmyxBoy well mine like anywhere from a forest setup to somehing like a sandy desert setup just make sure they have plenty of water and plenty of food
that is a red eared slider. look for long nails (male) and a males tail will be much thicker at the base and a female's tail will be shorter and smaller.
@moviephone314 that turtle is a red eared slider, and first you have to know what kind it is... now that you know you can do some recerch, red eared sliders, male and female both have the red dash on their face so you cannot tell by that.
@moviephone314 from the sound of the red color on the side of its face it sounds like a red eared slider(from what I've seen while researching tonight) not sure how to tell between a girl and boy, but if you research red eared slider and they look like your turtle I'm sure you can wikipedia it, girls are larger than boys in most turtle species(might be all not sure) but from what I read the female will grow to be 10-13 inches, and males grow to be 8-10 inches so if your turtle is grown, measure.
@moviephone314 ur turtle is called a red eared slider and the way u can tell if its a male or female is that the males ussually tend to have a bigger and thiv=cker tale as well as the feet or claws females hve smallewr
@moviephone314 theres two ways to tell , male turtles have a inward bend on the bottom part of the shell and females have a flat bottom shell and they usually have hazel eyes
@moviephone314 the most successful way to tell is the bottom of the shell. if it is flat it is a female if it is concave meaning it curves in it is a male that is because the male mounts the female. and your turtle is a red-eared slider i used to have them they are very common. fully grown a male will be about 5 inches whereas a female will be about 6-7 inches
@ReptilesForLife1 i use exo terra plantation siol along with repitle bark and samnd mixed in together find my turtles dig all though it and burry themselves alot
im sorrytht ur turtle died ......i had six turtles tht came up missing somehow so now i just got two...when one got lost i just went walking threw the woods bcause i was sad and happened to walk up on my biggst box turtle......tht was his second time to be "lost and found"
Ya acctually if the turtles are that slow theres something wrong with them

@DBDshow12 well you are half right, box urtles are not land turtles otherwize they would be called box tortoises. they live in water and land.

@DBDshow12
Actually, box turtles enjoy swimming along with just sitting in shallow water.

Hi, I was looking to buy a turtle and I saw these box turtles.
How much water do you need for a box turtle because I don't want to clean an entire tank for a RES turtle every week.
Also where are good places to buy them and how long do they live?
Thanks!
