I watched both of these speeches in their entirety when they happened and was pleased by their civility, but I was especially struck by McCain's speech, which was so radically different in tone from the fire-breathing stump speeches he gives at his rallies which all but accuse Obama of treason.

So what's the difference? Humor is one element, but I would submit that here McCain is speaking to people that he actually respects, while at his rallies he is pandering to people he looks down on.
