McCain got the nomination because Democrats and Moderates backed him in all the open primaries. There is no reason a candidate would tell an opponent to stay in the race. So I'm willing to believe Huckabee's gut feeling over McCain's denial. Not that Huckabee is a Conservative, either. They're both RINOs.
