Even if your mother was HIV+ at the time of your pregnancy,it doesn't guarantee that you contracted HIV from her. The integrated A-B-C model has been shown to be effective for unintended pregnancy and HIV prevention in diverse cultural contexts. Condoms are not always an option for poor people in rural locations (e.g. rural Mali) who can't afford them and lack cool storage for them. In such situations, abstinence and/or lower-risk sexual activities may be their ONLY options. Having sex is a CHOICE.

@SuperLessonslearned: A rapid PCR test can tell whether you contracted HIV as soon as 11 days after exposure. It's not available in all places. Go to the doctor, tell them your symptoms and risk factors, get tested for HIV, and follow the doctor's instructions including for any follow-up testing.

This is Eric. Sharing needles when injecting drugs is the single highest risk practice for HIV transmission. See our vid "Some ways you can contract HIV and the risk of each one." Some other possibilities (not a complete list): accidental needle stick for health care workers in the workplace; transfusion in developing countries where blood may not always be tested for HIV; splash of HIV+ blood in the eyes; etc. No doubt there are others.
Either you're a troll just trying to be outrageous, or you don't understand how unpleasant it can be to experience HIV infection, have to be on ARVs for the rest of your life, and have to manage ARV side effects. If you really think you want HIV, talk to someone who has been HIV+ for 10 or 15 years and ask them if you really want to have it.

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. AFAIK we have never developed a "cure" for any virus that the body doesn't rid itself of on its own. We would all like to see a cure for HIV and other serious illnesses ASAP, but that will likely require major advances in technology, genetic therapies, etc. In the meantime remember that ARVs have saved the lives of millions of people who would have otherwise already died of HIV; we can be grateful for that.
Recently, I beat up a guy who would be considered somewhat slightly unclean. Later on I heard that he got beat up badly abroad, & then I heard that he had apparently been raped. After punching him, I noticed a slight opening somewhere on my knuckle, (probably from a zip or something). I think there was a very small spatter of blood in two other places altogether on my hands. Obviously the place where I had the cut didn't cut him when it came in contact with his face.

You are correct that abstinence won't protect you from HIV if your spouse was sexually active before marriage and contracted HIV. Even if you're telling the truth, a single anecdote proves nothing about whether HIV is the cause of AIDS. You could be one of the lucky people with the CCR5 delta 32 mutation that provides significant resistance against HIV progressing to AIDS, for example. You need to balance the small number of HIV+ long-term non-progressors against the 25 million HIV+ people who have progressed to HIV and died and the 33 million HIV+ today, many of whom need ARVs to stay alive.

Intact skin is normally a barrier to exposure to HIV via blood. If her blood contacted your mucous membranes (e.g. the tip of the urethra at the end of your penis) or a genital sore, there could be a risk, so talk to a doctor and get tested and practice safer sex if you're sexually active, but personally I wouldn't lose sleep over this in the meantime.

If the home test kit was new, unopened, from a reputable company, and purchased through a professional source (like a major pharmacy), you shouldn't be able to contract any diseases by using the test kit.

I just received my HIV results and thank GOD they came out negative. Please people if you are going to engage in any form of sexual activity please, please wear a condom. You might not get a second chance in life, because once you're infected, you can't get rid of it, and then is just a matter of time before you're lying in your bed dying from AIDS.

In such situations, abstinence and/or lower-risk sexual activities may be their ONLY options. Having sex is a CHOICE.

This is Eric. Sharing needles when injecting drugs is the single highest risk practice for HIV transmission. See our vid "Some ways you can contract HIV and the risk of each one." Some other possibilities (not a complete list): accidental needle stick for health care workers in the workplace; transfusion in developing countries where blood may not always be tested for HIV; splash of HIV+ blood in the eyes; etc. No doubt there are others.

Either you're a troll just trying to be outrageous, or you don't understand how unpleasant it can be to experience HIV infection, have to be on ARVs for the rest of your life, and have to manage ARV side effects. If you really think you want HIV, talk to someone who has been HIV+ for 10 or 15 years and ask them if you really want to have it.

HIV-1 jumped to humans from the related SIV in chimpanzees, and HIV-2 jumped to humans from the related SIV in the sooty mangabey monkey. [Reeves JD, Doms RW. "Human immunodeficiency virus type 2." The Bible does not even mention HIV/AIDS. When its books were written, HIV did not yet exist. If God created HIV to reduce the gay population (which I do NOT believe!), why then are most people worldwide with HIV/AIDS heterosexual? Why does it infect infants, drug users, and medical workers stuck by accident with needles in the workplace?

If God created AIDs to kill off 'sinful' gay people, then he must also have created Meningitis C and various other nasty diseases to kill off the 'sinful' babies. Your reasoning on the causes of disease is completely medieval.
And I would like you to post the Bible and/or Qur'an passages where it states (or even implies) that God sent AIDs at all!
But if God DID send AIDS to keep the gay population down, then God is a massive failure as most people affected with AIDS/HIV are straight!

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. AFAIK we have never developed a "cure" for any virus that the body doesn't rid itself of on its own. We would all like to see a cure for HIV and other serious illnesses ASAP, but that will likely require major advances in technology, genetic therapies, etc. In the meantime remember that ARVs have saved the lives of millions of people who would have otherwise already died of HIV; we can be grateful for that.

Recently, I beat up a guy who would be considered somewhat slightly unclean. Later on I heard that he got beat up badly abroad, & then I heard that he had apparently been raped. After punching him, I noticed a slight opening somewhere on my knuckle, (probably from a zip or something). I think there was a very small spatter of blood in two other places altogether on my hands. Obviously the place where I had the cut didn't cut him when it came in contact with his face.

Here's another fact for ya....America is the most obese country in the world. That being said, we should encourage people to share needles and engage in promiscuous sex unprotected because it'll drive the aids count up in America even further and if more people get aids, eventually they lose a bunch of weight and America can work on being a less obese country again.

This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. It's true that most people don't abstain from sex until marriage, but some do. It wouldn't be appropriate to censor discussion of the abstinence option from HIV prevention education because some people don't (or don't like the idea) any more than it would be appropriate to censor discussion of condoms from HIV prevention education because some people don't use them (or don't like the idea). They are both available prevention approaches.

You are correct that abstinence won't protect you from HIV if your spouse was sexually active before marriage and contracted HIV. That's why the video says "If you or your partner were sexually active or injected drugs before marriage, a number of situations need to be discussed. One of you might be HIV positive and either know it or not."

Yes, Dr. Kuhn is an M.D. who specializes in HIV. It's not as simple or black and white as you're suggesting. According to the CDC, 97% who are infected with HIV will test HIV+ if tested with an ELISA (first test) 3 full months after they were infected. But there are some who won't seroconvert until six months after infection. In general, if you test HIV- on an ELISA at least six months after your last possible exposure, the odds of a false negative are extremely, extremely low--to the point that almost anyone will consider an HIV- on ELISA 6+ months *after last exposure* (key point) as definitive proof you're in fact HIV-.

this video is an insult to people like me who lived in perfect health with hiv for more than 22 years.
i nearly died when they put me on AZT and later Nevirapine during the ealry 90-ties. and when i asked my doctors if hiv actually causes aids they could not answer, even get upset.
so i stopped taking arv's. and here i am some 22 years later as healthy as ever, cycling some 80 km a wek to work.

Even if you're telling the truth, a single anecdote proves nothing about whether HIV is the cause of AIDS. You could be one of the lucky people with the CCR5 delta 32 mutation that provides significant resistance against HIV progressing to AIDS, for example. You need to balance the small number of HIV+ long-term non-progressors against the 25 million HIV+ people who have progressed to HIV and died and the 33 million HIV+ today, many of whom need ARVs to stay alive.

This is Eric. If you choose to be sexually active, you should make sure that both you AND your partner get tested for HIV first and also use safer sex techniques like condoms in case one of you is infected but hasn't turned seropositive (tested HIV+) yet.

@whst3: No racial epithets please. @XAaronX69: This is Eric; I'm not a doctor. You should talk to a doctor and follow their instructions. Intact skin is normally a barrier to exposure to HIV via blood. If her blood contacted your mucous membranes (e.g. the tip of the urethra at the end of your penis) or a genital sore, there could be a risk, so talk to a doctor and get tested and practice safer sex if you're sexually active, but personally I wouldn't lose sleep over this in the meantime.

They should make a fool proof way to test for HIV. If ANY person knowingly donates blood and has AIDS / HIV, by law they should be taken into a room and shot at least a dozen times. Dead.
A friend's child got AIDS (and died from it) and the school district he worked for fired him because he 'didn't wok to their potential', AKA - 'we don't want to pay for your dying son's medical bills'. The school district is Forest Grove, Oregon school district.
