@maineysanjose I was a kid then, and I loved them then as I do now. I saw them in concert for the first time a few months ago at the Cerritos Performing Arts Center and even briefly met Michelle Phillips after the show and thanked her for the Monterey Pop Festival for helping to bring Hendrix to the United States and give him the stage for about forty five historical minutes. WP did a great show and as a kid I thought they would be around forever, but, that's not the way it goes sometimes.
I don't think single version did as well as it could have because it remixed Carnie's harmony as the lead and that makes the lead vocal kind of boring, since it's actually harmonizing. Had Chynna's lead remained the lead, it might have done better on the charts.
@DDJ478 Wow! I though the was the only one who remembered this playing after the Bulls won in '91. I absolutey despise the Lakers which made a fond memory for me. You know Boston should've won last year if it werent for the crooked refs. F*CK the Lakers! You'll NEVER see a championship again.
@ debfan74 not necessarily. Janet's final single from Rhythm Nation turned out to be one of the album's biggest radio singles (7 weeks at #1 on the Radio). Mariah Carey's had a few final album singles go to #1 as well (I Don't Wanna Cry, Always Be My Baby, My All). Unless the band is a one-album fluke ;) then the last single is typically still popular (unless it's like the 7th+ single from the album)
@ji3200 No they are not triplets. Carnie Wilson, Wendy Wilson, and Chynna Phillips. Carnie, and Wendy are sisters Chynna is no relation to them. Chynna is a childhood friend of Carnie and Wendy.
Carnie and Wendy were the daughters of Brian Wilson
of the Beach Boys while Chynna is a daughter of John and Michelle
Phillips of The Mamas & The Papas.
They grew up together in Southern California in the '70s and the '80s. They shared a love of music and songwriting, and developed their own style of vocal harmonies.
it disappointed me when this song did not get as much play as the previous singles did....it always seems that any song from an album is like that , when the last single comes out, it falls by the wayside
@elmando5 My thoughts exactly. As a fat woman Carnie in her own right is one of the most attractive fat women in the world. As a skinny chick she's just another hot chick.
I've always loved Wilson PHillips, and this song. This video though, I don't know. Between Carnie's headband and Chynna's greased back hair. Not to mention Wendy's Page boy hair. Come on, director of this vid!

Chynna is the best among the three. She really beautiful she is not just a singer but can be a great actress. Unfortunately after she married to William Baldwin I have not seen any either new album or movie from her.
More than any other of Wilson Phillips songs, this song shows each one of the girls "true" singing talents. I really love how Carnie was able to provide her real range (her low to high note, just like Brian provides). Wendy is just like her Uncle Carl (so very underrated) and Chynna is just like both John and Michelle. Between the three of them, they totally make their Mamas and Papas (no pun intended) very proud.
Yes, the kids truly had respect for their parents' tradition of vocal harmonies. Seems like country music is the only place you hear it anymore, it's sad. But, nearly 20 years have gone by, it'll be exciting to hear what THEIR kids come up with!
Back in the 1900s...the time of innocence...you don't find such innocence as this in todays crappy world. I don't know about Chyanna, but Carnie and Wendy really showed the world you can have fun without being naughty. Ugh. I wish I could have seen it.
This video is proof that you can mix pop and rock together as long you do right. I think Wilson Phillips really accomplished that with this video. Their first album is my favorite pop record of all time. It has such a cool and calm feeling to it that you'll be relaxed by the time the record stops playing.
This is definitely my favorite song by Wilson Phillips. There are definitely one of the best female trios ever. All such gorgeous and hugely talented women.
Love to see the bond exudes within the trio, it relates to the song and the glimpse of their childhood makes a perfect perk . it makes me miss my dear friends more!
I love this song but I always thought it was weird that when they released the single they decided to make it a "Carnie" lead on the chorus without re-recording the track. Carnie has a beautiful voice, but she's singing harmony on the chorus and they decided to make it the lead. Musically it doesn't make sense. Great video and song though.
You got a point there. On the album version, Chyna's voice stands out on the chorus but on the remixed 7 inch version, they re-synched the voices and added some guitars to make it sound like Carnie is the lead vocalist which, in a way, sounds more balanced, but when she says the word "heart" in the chorus, Chyna is nowhere to be heard on the 7 inch radio version.
Yeah, I understand what you mean. On my cassette version (and CD version too, I believe...... ) Chynna's voice has dominance during the chorus of this song. ;-) It's almost as if they remixed it and upped the volume on Carnie's part and lowered it on Chynna's, as if to emphasize this was "Carnie's lead."
Yes, it sounds weird to hear Carnie's notes as the lead when her singing the lower notes would usually be the backup. Also notice the drums remixed, different guitars during the middle of the song when the drums stop and they harmonize, and other remixes during the song. It is known as the Q-sound remix on the original cassette singles.
Poor Wendy was barely in the song and when she was, she was singing ooh and some harmony. At some points it sounded like Chynna had laid down her own harmony track.
Yes, I agree. I think they did this as a way to give Carnie a 'lead single', because Chynna had 2 (with "Hold On" and "You're in Love") and Wendy had one (with "Impulsive"). I remember so hoping they would release "Eyes Like Twins" or "Next to You" instead, both songs which displayed Carnie's vocal range.
Annalissac, I agree. "Eyes Like Twins" was a good song and really showcased Carnie's vocal ability. "Next to You" was really good, too, but I think the "Ohhh-eee-Ohhh" looping through the song made it a hard sell in the mainstream.
I love Wilson Phillips and this is my favourite song. I notice though that you can hardly hear Wendy singing in this clip, and Carnie's voice really stands out. Even during the chorus when Carnie is not the lead vocal, you hear her more than the others. I wonder why that is? It still sounds amazing though. All 3 have amazing voices!!
Luv this song, it never got the recognition it should have when it was released, should have gone to number 1 or at least top 5, perfect closeing for the album
I agree. I think you have to go back the the fact that these girls grew up with extremely talented parents(the Mamma's and the Pappas and Brian Wilson) Is it any wonder they have mastered harmony so well??
I will never understand why "Next to You (Someday I'll Be) was not released as a single. I guess some "suit" decided they had made a killing already and why look a gift horse in the mouth. The sad thing is I am sure it would have been a big hit and more than just those who bought the album would have heard it.
Not sure if that song would've been a good single. I hear what you are saying, especially if that song is a fave, but IMO, it was not single material. B-side, yes. I love the song "Eyes Like Twins" and am glad it was never a single as it would not have cut it against the other songs. It is like my own piece of personal magic on that album that I don't have to share with anyone else :-)
OMG i so agree with you on the song "eyes like twins" it was my own personal majic too :) that song just takes me to a different time and place..Love it!! i was like 10 but i still love it to this day as much as i did then.."Ooh your Gold" is good too :)
Yup, this WAS indeed played at the end of the 1991 finals. Of the five hits from this album, this one was certainly better than "Release Me," which charted higher and got more airplay but wasn't as good. Oh well. The early 90's were the best part of the decade.
Indeed a beautiful song Carnie & Chynna looked really cute there the short hair look that Chyna had, made her look Dazzling. The song is an inspiration of how far we have overcome our heritage and that The Dream is Still Alive and well.
This was one of their better songs. I had their debut CD, and from top to bottom, it was really neat.
Here's something funny...I remember NBC playing this song while running the closing credits after game 5 of the 1991 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beat the Los Angeles Lakers.
Christina, Brittney, and the rest of the corporate poseurs have NOTHING on these talented beauties! Dream is still alive is right, baby! Sing on ladies!
quite by chance i came across wilson phillips on you tube,i goota say i've got a couple of their cd's and i can say they are and where brilliant, they speak volumes for a lot of us girls out there who hav at one time in our lives hav been hurt, gbut goes to prove we all can bounce bak, come on girl power,
u know girls are not the only gender that are hurt i can assure you of that. I went 2 years of drowning myself in tears alone in my apartment and drink myself to death hoping that i would die on the couch where i lay helplessly thinking about where i went wrong in ten years of relationship and that my brother who i gave xtra keys to wouldn't check up on me. And now i'm finally free and back on my feet thinking she ain't worth dying for
good for you mate i know it is'nt just girls that get hurt but i'm pleased you picked urself up.i'm now happily married again so it just goes to prove that life can and will get better, good luck in what ever you do,
thank you and i hope that u are happily married and whoever he is he's very lucky to have a sincere and beautiful person as well as personality like you
thankyou for your kind words,it's not just my new husband who is lucky i to am verylucky to have found him again after nearly 35 years it's a long story but we new each other many year ago and then as time went by we both drifted in differant dirrections but eventually met up up again, perhaps destiny had a hand to play who knows, good luck in what ever your life holds out for you.
I read somewhere that the blond singer Chynna is the daughter of the actor Dennis Hopper, and her Mom is Mamas and Papas singer Michelle Phillips...is this true?
By the time this song came out the "girls" were already being ignored. This was another song that could have made top five but it never got air play. From this point on they were pretty much dissed in their careers. You have to remember that this is when GRUNGE music became popular.
Sad, really... a lot of really talented people, and good musicians had their careers cut short by the Grunge craze. I turned to my own roots and started listening to Latin Music and Mexican pop groups like Mecano at that point...
Are you idiots really using this video to discuss politics? Get a life.

On the album version, Chyna's voice stands out on the chorus but on the remixed 7 inch version, they re-synched the voices and added some guitars to make it sound like Carnie is the lead vocalist which, in a way, sounds more balanced, but when she says the word "heart" in the chorus, Chyna is nowhere to be heard on the 7 inch radio version.
platanotaco 3 years ago
Yeah, I understand what you mean. On my cassette version (and CD version too, I believe...... ) Chynna's voice has dominance during the chorus of this song. ;-) It's almost as if they remixed it and upped the volume on Carnie's part and lowered it on Chynna's, as if to emphasize this was "Carnie's lead."
I don't mind at all... but... kind of odd. lol
tygersflowerz 2 years ago
though it sounds kinda better this way, cause all 3 voices can still be appreciated than the cd version.
FRANKYCG 2 years ago
Yes, it sounds weird to hear Carnie's notes as the lead when her singing the lower notes would usually be the backup. Also notice the drums remixed, different guitars during the middle of the song when the drums stop and they harmonize, and other remixes during the song. It is known as the Q-sound remix on the original cassette singles.
platanotaco 2 years ago
Poor Wendy was barely in the song and when she was, she was singing ooh and some harmony. At some points it sounded like Chynna had laid down her own harmony track.
marvelboy74 3 years ago
Yes, I agree. I think they did this as a way to give Carnie a 'lead single', because Chynna had 2 (with "Hold On" and "You're in Love") and Wendy had one (with "Impulsive"). I remember so hoping they would release "Eyes Like Twins" or "Next to You" instead, both songs which displayed Carnie's vocal range.
annalissac 3 years ago
Annalissac, I agree. "Eyes Like Twins" was a good song and really showcased Carnie's vocal ability. "Next to You" was really good, too, but I think the "Ohhh-eee-Ohhh" looping through the song made it a hard sell in the mainstream.

The current singers don't make these kind of music anymore. I can still sing along with all Wilson Phillips' songs after all these years...lol
wingbreaker 4 years ago 3
I love Wilson Phillips and this is my favourite song. I notice though that you can hardly hear Wendy singing in this clip, and Carnie's voice really stands out. Even during the chorus when Carnie is not the lead vocal, you hear her more than the others. I wonder why that is? It still sounds amazing though. All 3 have amazing voices!!

Luv this song, it never got the recognition it should have when it was released, should have gone to number 1 or at least top 5, perfect closeing for the album

Christina,Britney and most of their type in this day and age cannot be compared. But This is not Bubble Gum Pop At All.

GOD711 4 years ago
I agree that entire album was hit after hit. not since Blondie's Parallel Lines had an album with a female lead voice(s) had so many excellent cuts.

Listen to Heart's 1985 self titled album, every song on that could of been a hit! :=)

Sheeeeet. Heart can rock better than most male bands.

for me brigade is their best overall album but heart is a great album also.

Not sure if that song would've been a good single. I hear what you are saying, especially if that song is a fave, but IMO, it was not single material. B-side, yes. I love the song "Eyes Like Twins" and am glad it was never a single as it would not have cut it against the other songs. It is like my own piece of personal magic on that album that I don't have to share with anyone else :-)
kraavitz 4 years ago
OMG i so agree with you on the song "eyes like twins" it was my own personal majic too :) that song just takes me to a different time and place..Love it!! i was like 10 but i still love it to this day as much as i did then.."Ooh your Gold" is good too :)

this isnt the original version of the song, its too low. I dont know what this is. Its still good, but i want the original.
nagaem12 4 years ago
Yup, this WAS indeed played at the end of the 1991 finals. Of the five hits from this album, this one was certainly better than "Release Me," which charted higher and got more airplay but wasn't as good. Oh well. The early 90's were the best part of the decade.

Indeed a beautiful song Carnie & Chynna looked really cute there the short hair look that Chyna had, made her look Dazzling. The song is an inspiration of how far we have overcome our heritage and that The Dream is Still Alive and well.

The title "the dream is still alive" comes from a lyric in one of the Bangles' songs.

This was one of their better songs. I had their debut CD, and from top to bottom, it was really neat.
Here's something funny...I remember NBC playing this song while running the closing credits after game 5 of the 1991 NBA Finals when Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls beat the Los Angeles Lakers.

quite by chance i came across wilson phillips on you tube,i goota say i've got a couple of their cd's and i can say they are and where brilliant, they speak volumes for a lot of us girls out there who hav at one time in our lives hav been hurt, gbut goes to prove we all can bounce bak, come on girl power,
jeanniebebe123 4 years ago
u know girls are not the only gender that are hurt i can assure you of that.

I read somewhere that the blond singer Chynna is the daughter of the actor Dennis Hopper, and her Mom is Mamas and Papas singer Michelle Phillips...is this true?
hamevans01 4 years ago
No, John Phillips is the Chynna's father
zoggyzoggo 4 years ago
Actually, Chynna Phillips is the daughter of Michelle and John Phillips- both of the Mamas and the Papas.

By the time this song came out the "girls" were already being ignored. This was another song that could have made top five but it never got air play. From this point on they were pretty much dissed in their careers. You have to remember that this is when GRUNGE music became popular.
vdubmovieguy 4 years ago
Sad, really... a lot of really talented people, and good musicians had their careers cut short by the Grunge craze. I turned to my own roots and started listening to Latin Music and Mexican pop groups like Mecano at that point...
