ALMOST like a tradition. it encourages them.
It's actually pretty fun to learn. Islander blood runs deep within my veins so I felt it was very proud of myself when I learned the Haka. I felt like it brought me closer to my cultural roots =]

@tainui26 The reason is because the students who go to this high school and play on the football team have the same culture as you and come from where you are from. They taught the team this dance and everyone has been very accepting of it. That was a really long time ago when that all started. Ever since then, it has been tradition to do this dance. I understand that it is "your" dance but a lot of your people go to this school too.

This haka is npt a polynesian culture only a Nerw Zealand. Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Samoa and TGongan have completly seperate hakas which are tradition to them. This haka is npt a polynesian culture only a Nerw Zealand. Pacific Islands such as Fiji, Samoa and TGongan have completly seperate hakas which are tradition to them. Even if you do have family from NZ it gives you NO right to steal our most prided tradition and ruin it. I have family who have lived in NZ but now live over seas and they wouldn't dare perform the ahka now as they know it is soley for New Zealand citizens.

I have been to tonga, fiji,rarotonga and samoa. each specific culture claims independence from the other. where I grew up tongans and samoans for example are far from the same they mostly hate each other. thats a generalisation but hey i come from the largest polynesian country in the world. we have the largest PI city in the world (auckland) so i think it is a fair comment in saying the general opinion here is that we are not all the same!

The Haka [ ka mate ] is a Maori wardance performed to intimidate an opposing army.
The New Zealand national rugby union team (the All Blacks) perform the dance as a salute to their Maori heritage.
The Tongan equivelant is called the Kailao / Sipi Tau and is another wardance of South Pacific origin.
