This song is from the Steven Spielberg movie E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial, released in 1982.

The song was not part of the movie. It was written by Neil Diamond after he saw the movie, which makes it a great tribute song. Around the same time there was a movie called Romancing the Stone with Sharon Stone and Michael Douglas, and Eddie Money wrote a song of the same name after he saw that movie. Those are the only two movies I know of that inspired this kind of response.
