  • It is truly heart breaking but America gave japan a chance to surrender so I guess it's both of our faults.

  • The average Japanese at the time was willing to die for their emperor. Whether by bombs or bullets - I don't believe it made any difference to them. Thousands to Japanese civilians took their lives in Saipan by simply jumping off the cliff. Only the emperor's broadcast made them accept surrender. Without that, 2 nukes or not would have made little difference. The emperor's decision and his broadcast was very important key for the Japanese decision to end hostility. He was a god to them.

  • do u guys know what an american guy that was involved in making atomic bomb said about the dropping of the bomb? he said, "it was easier and quicker to destroy a city with atomic bomb than to invade" and when he visited the museum, he goes "i feel bad for them, but im not going to apologize for what i did" i was like wow...

dont get me wrong cuz i do like american and its ppl

i have many american friends so peace

  • @Brave0303Guy It had to be done. Casualties on both sides would of been much higher if an invasion was carried out on Japan.

  • and to thsoe of you who think america wasn't involved in WWII before pearl harbour, you don't know shit. they hadn't picked a side, but many infulential politicians and buisness men were proffiting from both sides, WAR PROFITEERING, it's called. Japan did what america woudl do now, if another country was doing the same thing they did.

  • i think it says a lot about the japanese people that they don't hold something like these tragedies against americans. i tell you ifa ny country dropped a nuke on america, NEVER would americans forgive them. thats straight up.

  • @RusconiDom actually both hiroshima and nagasaki were 90-95% civilians. it was a show of force of what the bomb could do so we could intimidate stalin, it had nothing to do with actually ending the war

  • Look, it doesn't matter what nationality you are, we all look at peace as something good. And FYI, the musium doesn't point fingers at all. It's just telling us how war can only hurt people, and nothing good will come from it

    Peace ;)

  • ok so we get the point ! japan killed americans amercians killed japans. but do we realy still hate them for it. its called HISTORY! you can't fix the past! its sad for both sides but can't we all just get along.

  • @AnimatorJapan101 Exactly. But this is youtube, so you can expect people to say offensive things just to start ridiculous flame wars.

  • ok so since i read coments before veiwing(bad choice) i would like to point out that just because japan attacked us at pearl harbor, and we bombed them, doesn't mean you can critiziz either side. like someone said, mistakes are made, bad choices, and its best to learn from those mistakes instead of living by them. it was a bad choice and i hope everyone has learned from it.and if you know your history, some people in japan thought it was a bad idea. everyone makes mistakes so get over it !

  • @RusconiDom In a way, yes. They could of fire bombed them, causing more casualties. Like I said before...War isn't ethical. If you start a war, expect your enemy to come back 10 fold. You don't get to pick and chose how they kick your ass :)

  • @RusconiDom Hiroshima was important to Japans war industries.Tokyo was already leveled by incendiary bombing prior to the atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. The fire storm produced by that bombing killed more people than died at Hiroshima and Nagasaki....Also American scientist needed cities that met certain conditions for a real time, real war nuclear test. The US Military/Scientific/Industrial complex needed pristine cities for bomb effects assessments.

  • @RusconiDom War isn't ethical. They wanted to nuke the people who brought them into the war...yes...Also to send a message to the world about Americas new found world dominance. Japan brought us into the war with a sneak attack, we ended it with a message.

  • How can all you guys only think about is the war? I play call of duty, and it's fun and all, but in real life war is a living hell. If nobody will forgive japan for the series of incidents, then that's just lack of maturity. Oh and awesome vid

  • i want to go to japan so badly but i have no idea how to speak the language haha does anybody have advice??

  • Yays! I'm a gaijin living in Hiroshima! Its the BEST city in Japan!! ♥ \('-^*)

  • they deserved that bomb. they were warn! the Japanese back then were vicious. that's what you get for attack America!

  • this guy looks like jason mraz hehe

  • I think this should reflect what Japanese did to the Chineses

  • Dude that's so ockwerd going there like hay don't look at me I didn't drop the bomb in your city hall bathroom haha

  • Heh....great how we make it out to be some heroic victory for the US when in truth we destroyed and killed many people and their homes...

    T-T I feel like such a dick...

    Stupid war... >=(

  • @clankbot9 I sure as hell don't.

  • Aw thats so sad but im glad that japan and america are friends again

  • @klemintine7 Well it can't be for everyone unfortunately. Personally I think Japan is amazing and I hope to travel there someday, but my grandparents still harbor negative feelings (not hatred, but still a teeny tiny something.) I can only imagine it being similar to some people there too :(

  • 日本国民全員広島、長崎で核兵器の不要さを学ぶべき!

  • Did you se the nishsin maru

  • one of my biggest dream since i was a kid was to go to Japan and go through to everything you went through and seen in japan, when i was in 5th grade in bosnia during the war, we received a presents from children of japan, and to this day i remember the kind words a little kid wrote and since that day my soul wanted to be part of japan and goodness of that people within, now i am married living in australia with two kids but im 27 y.o. and i am losing faith of ever going there, its expensive....

  • we warned them

  • YOU HAVE HAIR HERE!

  • Hiroshima happened because a japanese player called a tactical nuke during the alpha stages of modern warfare 2

  • cool vids.. you should make one of the cars out there..

  • I'd like to go to Japan in general someday, looks interesting.

  • I guess this is what happen when you do America dirty(Pearl Harbor), we make sure our payback leaves a mark that can never be forgotten(Hiroshima/Nagasaki). Karma is a bitch, isn't it?

  • @EpicFknBrutality so killing inocent women and children is alright

  • @brightonhamster I don't know, ask the Japanese who ambushed and killed innocent women and children at Pearl Harbor WITHOUT WARNING... and ask the leaders of Japan who were warned to surrender before the bombs were dropped and chose to suffer the consequences instead. Obviously the Japanese must've thought killing innocent women children was alright or they would've surrendered instead of letting them all die.

  • @EpicFknBrutality killed children you just made that up no kids died at pearl and apart from a few civilians it was a military target compared to citys full of people

  • @brightonhamster Don't forget Japanese killed millions of civilians all over the pacific.

  • @EpicFknBrutality Seriously, get your facts straight before you post, moron.

  • @EpicFknBrutality must be an ignorant fucking nigger

  • @zeppelinrules2 lol y u so proud saying the Us are the strongest??? They got their ass fucked by Iraq and ran away on the middle of the night.... And u want to make a point to not fuck with America shit they have more loses than wins on war

  • you really should not be so much welcomed there as an american, were you?

  • do not fuck with America!

  • This is very moving. The world shoud NEVER forget, so that hopefully this kind of thing NEVER, EVER HAPPENS AGAIN. Lovely video, Mate.

  • omg, u got hair

  • wow im so glaad we didn't destroy everything and glad they were able to recreate the cities and everything....

  • i;ve watched all of your vids...all great >>> 5 stars..especially the toy store visit....i have love everything japan...my mom stayed there for a while..but im stuck here in my country...anyways i have learned a lot about japan and some of it came from you...thank you....hopin someday i'll visit too....keep it up sir..!

  • As a American watching this, all I can think is ‘we did that, that’s what the country I was born and raised in thought was the right thing to do.’ It makes me so sad, so many innocent people died.

  • @mellokeehl Why would it make you sad? 200,000 died, so millions of Japanese and Americans wouldn't die during a mainland invasion...They estimated that conquering Japan would cost 1.7 to 4 million American casualties, including 400,000 to 800,000 fatalities, and five to ten million Japanese fatalities...It's a good thing we dropped the bomb...resulting in ZERO American casualties...They started the war, we ended it.

  • My favorite video out of all of them. Very interesting...I have conflicting emotions when seeing this..see my great-grandfather was a service man in wwII and some of the stories hes told me...have given me mixed feeling ....

  • This made me want to cry, hearing what you said about what happened in Hiroshima.... it's really a terrible thing, to know how the American's did this.. I remember reading about it last year in school, but actually SEEING it, and hearing what you had to say was truly devestating.. Thank you though, for sharing it with us.

  • wow, that was very moving! thankyou for sharing! hiroshima is where Perume formed! yay!! I <3 PERFUME~

  • I actually went to the atomic memorial/museum and I felt pretty sick afterwards. Pretty crazy, but it was quite an experience. Thanks for the vid!

  • we could of sent in about 200,000 us troop back then and loss about 100,000 us troop!

  • this is amazing now I REALLY want to go to japan!!

  • So like the world to forget.Time makes people forget. I am glad Japan has keep that historic place.

  • @thehellisnear well that's not entirely true, actually if you're planning to live there even for a short period of time you'll definitely need to speak a little japanese. Plus I think that's the cool part about living abroad, in trying to learn the language you unterstand better the country and its people.

  • I have heard this in school already - really interesting tough...

Ps: I liked you more when you were bald xD

  • hes bald now, this is older

  • So touching...thank you.

  • you have to tell me how ytou learned your beginning japanese. like i caught that you take courses but like... where did you learn enough to come to japan???? please lemme know.

  • This is going to be a very, very, long story but here it goes.

When I was In my 12 grade year in high school I was taking an art class. At the time me and the rest of the class where doing origami. ..........

  • Then after my teacher told the class a story about Hiroshima.

The story is about a young girl who survived the atomic bomb. She was in the hospital, and at the time she started to make cranes out of origami paper. Her family started to do this as well. The reason why she was doing this is so that she could make a wish. ........

  • But before she is able to make that wish she would need to make about 2,000 or more (i don't remember exact) cranes to make that wish. But b-4 she finished, she past away so her family decided to finish it for her. So they did and her wish was for WORLD PEACE.

This story touched my heart, I will never forget it.

  • There's a book based on it.

  • War is terrible. My great-grandfather died from starving to death, and so did my other great-grandfather. They just stopped eating so their families could eat.

  • I'm half japanese and my japanese grandmother and grandfather didn't blame the americans for this, but their emperor Hirohito. Even though my Granduncle was killed by Americans, they didn't hate them neither before or after the war. Hopefully nothing like this will happen again since the bombs today will cause a lot more damage. ps: I'm also half British.

  • wars are good for nothing...and people are not involved in...not the american people nor the japanese...only political and religious leaders are responsible of making wars.

  • @MrScarcrow : Einstein did not drop the bomb. That's like blaming McDonald's for making the customers fat.

  • Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it...

Hopefully this will remind EVERYONE (not just Americans) what kind of devastation nuclear weapons can cause, and with a little luck, hopefully they'll never be used again.

  • i knew i was gonna find stupid comments about this

  • I don't think most americas will be able to accept the inherent immorality of the bomb drops until the grandchildren of the WWII generation are past retirement.

  • that bombing really makes me sick

    very tragic

  • Excuse me but bullshit. Have you ever studied about pre-WWII japanese culture? If you have then you wouldn't be able to call them savages. Wars happen. Bad choices were made. That doesn't automatically make a cultured and intelligent race a bunch of brutal savages.

  • @shiawasecrasher Anyone in the Axis were savages. End of story.

  • In war, it cannot be decided which is right.

A winner says that they are justice.

    You are not human.

  • @jdawgisback

Actually, several of the Allied nations were far far worse than the axis powers. The soviet union murdered and starved about 50-60 million people in the last century, while estimates of China's genocides go upwards of 100 million people. That's nothing compared to Germany's 12 million.

  • @ChudFapper

Its nice to see someone that knows their facts when it comes to the truth about the soviet union..

  • @shiawasecrasher

seriouslly, sadly people follow watever the media say, hence the sad comments such as what you just retaliated against. FACT: Americans said the indigenous people were savages for "scalping" when in fact, americans did it first hence the phrase "a dollar for a scalp". Most likley the native indians saw this and also copied the action, in properganda-like retaliation. Whos the savages in that scenario? :O lemme guess, "its still the indians" lolz some people are full of shit xD

  • @xxghostxxihmxx you go to hiroshima and try saying that you little tit, what the yanks did to hiroshima and nagasaki is unforgiveable , japan had lost the war and were looking for away to give up before the americas bombed them. do you know why hiroshimi was picked ?? it was picked because of its high population and it was easly spoted form the air (a large T shaped bridge ) . the two bombings were notting more that tests for there new toys. check the facts before you open your large pie hole.

  • @xxghostxxihmxx americans are brutal savages tthe same americans that told everybody that gheisha's where prostitutes and they wheren't but the soldiers violeted there culture and trhowed shit on those centurys of traditions so think about that

  • Hope your not sterile now.

  • my grandpa was in hiroshima 45 days after the u.s droped the bomb

  • "there are always victims of war" Boiling water eyy?? That must I've been HOT

  • The dome was a freaking school

  • ..the river boiled??was A-bomb that hot..??may the history not be repeated..PEACE!!

  • bombs of the same kind these days are much much worse, that bomb would be considered peace compared to the ones of our time :p

  • Modern Hydrogen bombs actually use an atom bomb just to set them off!

  • no..i remember reading that it landed in nagasaki

  • their were 2 boms

  • I'm a Hiroshima citizen. Thank you very much for visiting to Hiroshima city. You are American, so you must have some conflicts in mind. I know there are many pros-cons opinions about the drop of A-bomb in USA. However, the biggest problem is that there are many Americans who dont know how horrible weapon A-bomb is, but you knew it by visiting here. I hope youll tell it to them.

By the way, did you eat an Okonomiyaki (Hiroshima citizens soul food) while you were in Hiroshima ?

  • @kensan0809 i agree with you. i guess in a way you can't really look at this with pros or cons. you have to look at it and hope the people of earth learned something of this and never repeat what caused such a horrid think to happen. Peace be with the world and i hope our childeren may feel the love that might flood this world.

  • @snowmonkie44 Hello ! Thank you for your comment. I really agree with you. Today (8/9) is the day A-bomb was dropped on Nagasaki city and my birthday and I'm living in Hiroshima. I hope someday the world peace summit is held here to decide on eliminating all nuclear weapons on Earth.

Have a nice day from Hiroshima city in hot summer.

  • @kensan0809 thank you for your post. it really means alot to hear from a citizen of Hiroshima

  • I really like your video´s...some of them are really funny.....What kind of school are you going too??? I´m going to Japan to learn the language next year when i´m 18 :)

  • he is an english teacher

  • man that brings back memories its such a sereal feeling knowing that the a bomb went off like just above you there has i recomend a visit. war is war and bad things happen but such a peacefull place i also advise a visit to the floating temple its awesome

  • I think americans should go there because some americas don't know how the A-bomb really effected hiroshima and nagasaki so the memorial is a reminder that this can never happen again

  • @banzaileah tell that to IRAN RUSSIA CHINA we shoud take all our bombs and give it to them?

  • @banzaileah What? of course it could happen again, but this time lets blow up the moon!

  • don´t mean to be rude or hurt anyone´s sensibility

but i think it was very imprudent of tom going there as an american, is a bit of like how people would react to a taliban taking video at ground zero... i know is not the same, but just to put a comparison to another awkward situation... no matter how long ago was people must still be in pain about what happened there... u_u,

  • I like that he went there... to learn about the past so it won't be repeated.

I'm half Japanese, born in Japan, American citizen, by the way.

  • hey im half japanese too

  • i heard that people's shadows were fused onto the ground anyways i can hear the lovely cicadas

    zreeeeee~zreeeeeeee

  • How much Kanji do you know? You seem to be pretty good at it. x_X

  • Great video...really informative.

  • I'd feel bad to be there as a Westerner.. If I were American I just wouldn't go there at all..

  • i think peace was at a cost unfortunately a great one ...but i pray that we can still keep it forever.

  • bombs are not, nor will they ever be the answer...

  • to opening tin cans

  • That was fascinating, yet heartbreaking.

  • The image put at 5:21-5:25 is excellent like the scene of the bus of supervisor Alain Rene's "Love affair of 24 hours" if it compares it.

And, the Japanese and the American might become the people opened from the ressentiment of the war for the first time in the history of mankind as a possibility.

Wonderful video where those possibilities are suggested.

  • Awesome job. What mostly impressed me was how you read that plaque right through just as I would read English. I can't help but envy your knowledge with the Japanese language good job.

  • this vid makes you stop and think. Thanks for sharing man!

  • Thanx. Some thing, though horrible, are worth thinking about.

  • i really enjoy this vid..ths for sharing..very interesting..anyway make's me sad..to remember that this things has really hapenning...

  • It is sad, but I'm glad you watched it!

    Thank you!

  • Thanks for posting this videos and others like it - I would love to be traveling and seeing these things for myself, but since I can't, I can see them through you!

  • Glad to be of service. Enjoy!

  • If you're interested in the human condition towards war check out The Most Dangerous Animal: Human Nature and the Origins of War. It deals, in essence, with what you talk about in the last few minutes of this video.

  • I love watching videos like these! Awesome

  • Very powerful video. Thanks for sharing!!!!

  • Very interesting vid Tom. Thanks!

  • this is currently my topic for my individual assignment A2 American History, perfect timing for a video, im going to do a case study discussing the build up to/motivations behind the bomb, whether it was to end world war or to warn russia from pending nuclear warfare, very interesting yet scary stuff...

  • Read "Hiroshima in History and Memory". It's a collection of essays, and deals directly with what you're doing your paper on.

    Good luck!

  • Thanks alot, i'll definitely look that up!

  • Although Einstein was initinally one of the contributers to the atomic bomb dicovery, he once said a very smart thing: "There are two things that are endless, The universe and the human stupidity - and I'm not sure about the first one".

Seeing this, and so many other horros we've cause to our fellow human beings and animals, Sometimes I can't help but wonder, Are we worthy of dwelling here?

  • I really do hope we'll reach peace in our life time.

  • The question of right or wrong was answered in Dreseden when the US decided massive civilian casualities would be an effective approach in bringing an end to the war. Atomic bombs brought in to play the issue of the effects of radition. But right or wrong the policy to target, bomb and masacre large scale numbers of civilians had been standard practice for well over a year prior to Hiroshima.

  • Actually the other approach was for a U.S. land invasion of Japan and from what I know of history Japan vowed to use civilians to fight if the U.S. planned a land invasion. The U.S. thought it would cause more civilians casulaties to do a land invasion instead of dropping the a-bomb to end the war quickly..

  • Amazing man. I was shocked when they declassified the Truman files a few years ago and read that Truman actually declined the first Japanese surrender because he didn't like the terms, which in the end weren't much different from the ones settled on after the bombs were dropped. Truman used those bombs mainly to scare the Russians. Pretty ridiculous.

  • Great vid Tom. That must have been a humbling and quite spiritual experience for you being there and seeing all that. I read a book called A Diary: Hiroshima... by Dr. Michihiko Hachiya that was amazing and quite real being written from the viewpoint of someone that survived the bombing.

  • I've been there. The Peace Park is beautiful and very depressing.

  • (con...) Sorry I didn't quite get that... either way, that came as a bit of a shock, I couldn't imagine that amount of pain...

... and the pain that was left long after.

  • Thanx for the comment. And, yes, that was the same river.

  • It is amazing to think that where you stood used to be in complete ruins, death and emptiness, and now trees are around, I can hear crickets (whatever that insect is) and its life everywhere. Life and time does move on and keeps going as they say.

I find WWII to be very interesting. Its good that you went there and thanks for sharing it with us.

The river you were referring to, is that the river you were standing in front of as you were telling us about it? (con...)

  • Same thing can be said on the concentration camps around Europe, especially Auschwich. Standing there you can't believe the horrors that people went through there, now that it's all green and lifefull...

  • Whoa.. throw this up as a response to the collab.. may it indeed prevail...

is this the same trip as the "no smorking in bed" video? haha!
