@kingnings a light machine gun as it fires an intermediate round that is also used by the assault rifle it was fielded with (AK). This is just like our SAW which is a light machine gun or squad automatic weapon that fires the same around as the m16 or m4. The PKM would be a medium machine gun, as it fires the full rifle round, the 7,62 x 54r instead of the AK round, the 7.62x39.

@kingnings It's normally used as a MMG. Most MMGs are belt fed. Magazine-fed MGs like the RPK are usually considered LMGs. Most LMGs and MMGs have the same calibre, just different feeding mechanism. For example the RPD is designed for both LMG and MMG roles, while the RPK is for shoot-and-move. HMGs are the overkill class. They mostly use .50 caliber and they are called chain guns because they use an external source of power for ammo feeding. A HMG that uses normal calibre ammo is the Minigun.

this is the best LMG out there. Accurate, minimal recoil and freekin lethal. It is also very reliable because of the simple construction (like AK-47)

the only flaw of this gun is that it is extremely heavy. I wouldnt want to carry this big boy around. Also to keep in mind, whoever is carrying the biggest stick gets focus fired first.

@guitarPwnage007 The RPD is not the best, the RPKM is. Because it is easier to load and it can use standard AK-47 magazines, the RPKM and RPK’s, in general, are more versatile and user friendly. The RPD is awkward to load with drum mags compared to the RPKM, where as it is just like loading a good old AK-47. Additionally, RPD belts and magazines are harder to come by in the Middle East than Ak-47: 30, 40, and 75 round magazines. This is the same with the RPK-74.

Nope not related at all, RPD designed in '44 AK in '47 and Vasily Degtyaryov designed the RPD while Mikhail Kalashnikov made the AK. Although they do look similar to the RPK's there are no similarities (well they shoot the same round but none other than that)

No, but there is an AKM variant machine gun called the RPK. The AKM was so popular and effective, they started modifying it for different roles. There is the Dragonuv SVD sniper rifle, (This sucked,) the PP-19 submachine gun, (Great,) and the RPK (Also great.) They even designed a shot gun based on the AKM (Saiga 12.)
