I really can not see where this story comes near to star wars...
All the similiarities are always about the characters and the airships - and these similiarities are in my eyes quite doubtable - but however, what's with the story?
What does this story has in common with Star Wars? I can not see where Square Enix has taken sth. from it. I mean, look at the whole story, not just at certain scenes.
If you only look on certain things you can always find similiarities to sth. in every game/film.
storry is ok but its to near to Star wars no one see this? Gabranth is like Darth Vader Vane like Pelpatine, on one point of the game you are on a floating island with a mine - Landis island from Star wars 5? The Bahamut with its Lazer like the Deathstar? Vader and Skywalker Father and son Gabranth and Bash Brothers. Han solo with his unhuman friend Chuwbaka Balthier and his Playboybunny friend? are you blind? ok they made Phantasy storry out of this but its Final Fantasy Starwars! Think of it
Two years ago, i had a discussion with my english teacher (i am german), about how i learned english. I said that i play a lot of english games, and she couldn't believe that this was the reason for my "good" english, since she thought all games would be about shooting and killing.
Luckily, we had a PC in every classrom and internet in the whole school, so i showed her this video. She truly was suprised that Games could contain such nice dialogues together with the very good voice acting.
Its a very good scene. Vayne exercises supreme executive power and has almost unanimous support from the judicial sector. Drace, the lone dissent is executed on the very spot and legislative senate is trembling in fear.
Oh yeah, Zargabaath is awesome as well. The best Judge, because he survives and yet, is a nice guy that cares for others. That Alexander ramming idea made my jaw drop. Also, another thing I disliked (hate is a strong word) was the language. It just felt weird after FFX anf FFVII AC with their modern language to be hearing this.
Although it is a good game, out of the main titles, it is my 4th favorite.
1. FFVII
2. FFX
3. FFIX
And out of ALL FF games, it is much further down.
My favorite FF is Crisis Core, they managed to make a rather minor character great, thanks to this game, Zack is my favorite FF character.
One of the things I hated about this game was that the characters weren't really likable... For me that is. Other than Gabranth, Basch and Balthier, I generally didn't care about or hated the others.
@TielProductions Maybe ... in my opinion she should've have more scenes. Especially since she was the only female judge - she deserved more prominence.
The Judges were all awesome characters - Drace with her morality and sense of justice, Zargabaath with his rational patience, Gabranth with his internal conflict. Bergan, cruel monster that he is, still had developed motivations beyond power-for-power's sake. Even Ghis had vestiges of complexity.
Best Final Fantasy ever made -- even if Matsuno was only there to develop it half-way. Just imagine if he was there for the entire duration! It would have easily become the best game ever.
@DShadow Mm, yes ... there were some great ideas for FF XII which never really came to be. Among them, Penelo's brother's would have been alive and members of the Dalmascan resistance ... Vaan's would have been a close friend to Ashe (ie like a brother), giving more reason for him joining the party... both Basch and Balthier were at separate points considered to be the player protagonist ... and there were meant to be interactive airship battles (like in 'Star Wars') ...
@DShadow FF XII had potential - it could've been the GREATEST FF game to date, and yet in many ways it falls flat. The ways that matter to me, especially I'll admit - the characters weren't as complex as I would've liked, there wasn't much use given to the other races (Fran was the ONLY player character who wasn't a Hume), and among other things, we didn't get to visit Rozzaria...
Good things included the battle-style, the maps (WOW!), and the grey morality given to both heroes and villains.
@AvatarWho, thanks for the info, the only things I knew for the most part, was that the main character was switched around a number of times, before SE decided to go with Vaan because of their stupid focus group. I really did enjoy the game and I would've loved it that much more if they had gone with the original vision.
Bergan, Drace, Gabranth and Zargabath... Absolutely amazing each and every one of them. Ghiz was a bit of a cunt but the rest are awesome. Gabranth, a walking paradox of conscience vs duty. Drace, Judge upholding the law without compromise. Bergan, aggressive militarist loyal to Vayne's vision and Zargabaath, dutiful and willing to do anything for what is right. That and each and every one of them had great voice actors.
@psychee1 I disliked Zargabaath. He knew what was going on was wrong but he basically shied away from any conflict, and didn't stand up for Drace at all. Yet he was the only judge to survive, which irks me
@Uktrayf What could Zargabaath do, exactly? He tried to tell Drace to keep her mouth shut and think things through instead of lashing out in the open, which isn't exactly a wise move. And if you recall he DID try and convince Vayne to spare Drace.
Zargabaath was loyal (to the Empire and its people), but was obviously out of his depth and had no love for what he did. And dislike him all you wish, but don't forget he was going to ram the Bahamut at the end, a death sentence in itself, to atone.
@AvatarWho Exactly. Zargabaath was about to lay down his life to save a city that wasn't even part of his own empire. Why? Sense of duty I'd imagine, it was the right thing to do. Hell, if it was up to him I doubt they'd have Dalmasca as the battlefield in the first place.
@Uktrayf I think the Judges are meant to show various approaches to using power and how it affects you. Zecht/Reddas didn't exactly leave the empire until after he unintentionally destroyed Nabudis, after all, something he knows he can never atone for. Zargabaath basically tried to minimise damage as best he could while in power, something he could do little of. Bergan basically worshiped Vayne for ruling iron-fisted. Ghis tried to seize power for himself when it was in his hands. Etc...
@psychee1 Ghis wanted to use the Dawn Shard to overthrow Vayne. It was pretty clear that he hated him too, so he might have been an interesting ally for the party. Of course Ghis wasn't any batter than Vayne, but he'd probably die somewhere along the way :P And you've gotta admit that death threat against Balthier after Raithwall's Tomb was pretty badass.

I do not consider this game as a Final Fantasy, because it doesn't have anything in common with the other games. As game alone, it has a lot of defects; but this is my favorite piece of the story. I really love Drace and Gabranth, even if they are secondary characters.

Great characters, all.
Ghis: A schemer, snake and careerist out for his own ends.
Drace: Lives by the law and for Larsa
Bergan: Vayne's man, wants to make the Empire even greater by any means.
Zargabaath: Dedicated to the concepts of Honour and the dream of a strong and just Archadia, not of any individual.
Gabranth. The most conflicted of them all.
