I adore this woman. We could live on this Earth for a million yrs and not once would you see someone of her caliber. She to me was the chosen true comedian of all time. I look forward to meeting her and shaking her hand and thanking her for being such a great entertainer when I die and go back Home.
The "Women from Mars" episode of "I Love Lucy" 's thired season, is not one of my favorites. My favorite episodes are in the 4th, 5th, and 6th seasons: where they're traveling and then move to Connecticutt.
She was such an A-1 class act. If you notice, whenever she was the mystery guest on WML, she would always make it a point to turn and salute the audience as she was leaving the stage. She definitely knew who she owed her fame to--her fans--and she always made them feel special!
Lucy gives a whole new meaning to the word Legend.. The audience went wild when she walked on.. Lucille Ball was one of the first True performers to be known only by their first name. Judy and Liza also are in that rare category.. Great clip!
Around 1978 I was on Beverly Blvd one evening and Lucy was standing outside Chasen's waiting for her driver. I pulled over and got out of my VW and walked back. There were about 15 people standing around the Beverly entrance, not a single person was talking, everyone who was standing there was simply looking at her and admiring her. She was standing like a queen, and we were her subjects. After a minute or two her car drove up and she got in and off she went.
Notice at the end of the clip when Lucy makes her exit how the gentlemen stand and the ladies remain seated.. These days of respectfulness towards others need to be revisited and embraced with this 'proper' behavior! This is what I remember growing up in the 60's.
@FiveStarPoolMgmtHB I've been watching a lot of these clips from this show and I've notice how everyone seems classier. They pronounce words clearly, they're well dressed but still sexy, and there's no sexual innuendo. I can't remember the last time a show on prime time didn't contain sex, drugs, and profanity. It's really irritating the more I think about it and I was born in the 90's.
Her skin is flawless and not a sag on her face to be seen. Someone said she had had a lift before this though! She does look very beautiful and natural to me though.
@calalilygirl Lucille Ball said she had a fear of surgery and didnt have a face lift. They did have little tricks like getting double sided tape to pull back the skin to make it appear smoother.. Even Lucy's children have gone on record saying that She never had Plastic surgery so what we see is the real lucy.. :)
A Lucy Memory-- I grew up in Los Angeles, and in the late '60's or early 70's, my mother was driving my friend and I through Beverly Hills in our family station wagon. Suddenly alongside us was Lucy in her Rolls Royce! My friend and I started screaming and carrying on like crazy. Lucy was obviously tickled and delighted by our reaction and smiled and gave us a wave.
People always say that Lucille Ball wasnt funny without a script (and Lucy always said this herself, mostly because of what a modest person she was... she never thought of herself as "a star", and plus she loved her writers), but I dare them to watch this and see for themselves. Some celebrities (no offense, of course) used to run from the show the moment the panel figured it out. But Lucy is just so charming and natural, and I love how the applause freaks out for her. That's why we <3 Lucy.
She always claimed that she herself wasn't funny, that it was just the writers who were funny, but I laughed out loud during this!! 'Are you a man?' 'MOOustly..no' hahaha. And how elegant is she!!! She moves like a dancer, floating. (The chiffon helps ;)) And I love how she simply signs her first name. Wonderful lady.
Stunning indeed. So tall for her generation and what a pair of legs! But she was a tough cookie, not a leggy bimbo, and so her film career probably stalled as a result. Still love her in the Marx Brothers' film Room Service.
Lucy and I have the same birthday! It's a shame she died the year before I was born. If we knew eachother, even for a little while during the 90's, we could've celebrated our birthday's together <3 I hope TCM dedicates the month of August to Lucille Ball next year (and the month of July to Ginger Rogers). They have "Star of the month" and both Lucy and Ginger would've been 100 years old next year!
It was so much better when the movie stars would dress like movie stars! Not in torn jeans and Tshirt like they do today! (At $20M a picture, they can afford it!)
I loved this clip! Who doesn't love Lucy? I was an Air Force brat and had the opportunity to meet many famous people via the USO shows. She was one star I remember meeting! I was lucky to have met many famous people. Thanks for posting this.
@markedwardindc Desi had a great line when there were questions about Lucy being a Communist (Her grandfather asked her to register as one back in the 1930s): "The only thing red about Lucy is her hair, and even that's not legitimate."
@ReadMyCommentBitch :-D :-D :-D Good answer, but the heals weren't too extreme and e.g. Bette Davis or Joan Crawford or Liz Taylor certainly had heals too and weren't so tall... but it doesn't matter, it was just a tiny notice :-)
Lucy Ball was a very beautiful woman. That fact is sometimes forgotten due to her zany performances. I wish I had the chance to meet Lucy. While a great clown, Lucy as also per this clip shows quite a Lady. A beautiful Lady. While Garbo, Stanwyck, Bette etc all were bigger movie stars it was Ms Ball not any of the golden age stars who rose to be the CEO of a great studio Desilu that produced
Mission Impossible, Star Trek, Lucy Show, Mannix and her smash hi
The Official Second Season of Lucille Ball's second series The Lucy Show, is coming to DVD on July 13, 2010! If you haven't seen the Lucy show it is so funny! And the second season co-stars Vivian Vance(Ethel)! Also it's in Color!
I've loved Lucy since I was 5 years old and now I'm 19 and I love her even more. I've read nearly all the books written about her as well as her autobiography, "Love, Lucy". I've seen ever episode of "I Love Lucy" and nearly all her other shows. I wished she was still alive. I would've loved to have met her.
Lucy was looking especially Beautiful in the episode. The last appearance was shortly after she started doing WILDCAT on B'Way. She had a face lift since then and looks sensational. These Hollywood stars today should take notice and find surgeons who will do them justice and keep their looks and not ruin them. Roseanne, Joan Rivers Joan Van Ark etc. with all their money u woudl think they woudl have found a true artist in Plastic surgery. Good Love ya Lucy! I too donate to Easter Seals too
@NFitalianGuy Interesting about the face lift remark. According to Tom Gilbert, co-author of the book, DESILU, Lucy never had any work done. Tom told me this personally.
no. the orig i love lucy came to a sreeching hault in about 1958 or so due to directly their pending divorce. after a few yrs of doing nothing. she came back with vivan vance in the lucy show.
Yes! Which is why it's best to speak in a form of standardised English so that we can comminicate with and to each other for consistancy (and to learn how to spell ) LOL), So I will say sucinkly ( see ! i told you about the spelling ) Miss francis looks both elegant and gracious and in total command of all the benefits that her many talents have afforded her. So there benet sirf. !! My elequence is slamming too ! I had to get that last bit of slang in there.!!
That was just a nice way of saying that Miss Francis no doubt received a lot of flack from people who make snide remarks about how during a time or more releaxed fashions, she always maintained the elegance of her worth. She worked hard on Broadway and in films and here on televison and was part of the arts and culture of most of the East Coast society scenes.. In short, "if you got it- wear it, and she did and she did it well. continueing up into her death.
and she didn't need a stylist or someone hired to help sell her image, she was how she presented herself, critics may have considered them affectations, but in reality she believed and lived the image that she created for herself. There were no conflicts in how she appeared. When she left the studio she was still Miss Arlene Francis. on the streets;; in a restaurant-- for an interview. there was nothing to turn off or on, no fears that something would slip.Always The Lady. the only way to live.
Lucy looks years younger here than her previous appearance on What's my Line? People don't realize. Lucy, as head of Desilu, said yes to Star Trek, whereas every other studio said no. In other words, Star Trek went into production because of Lucille Ball. One of our most gifted comediennes.

Very true. She was very classy and elegant.
I always love watching these shows because she always has the prettiest clothes. Its alittle bonus to her wonderful charm and wit!

and she didn't need a stylist or someone hired to help sell her image, she was how she presented herself, critics may have considered them affectations, but in reality she believed and lived the image that she created for herself. There were no conflicts in how she appeared. When she left the studio she was still Miss Arlene Francis. on the streets;; in a restaurant-- for an interview. there was nothing to turn off or on, no fears that something would slip.Always The Lady. the only way to live.

@CarlyIsAGangster I realize now you were likely talking about Arlene, but the comment is just as true for her as well.

Lucy looks years younger here than her previous appearance on What's my Line? People don't realize. Lucy, as head of Desilu, said yes to Star Trek, whereas every other studio said no. In other words, Star Trek went into production because of Lucille Ball. One of our most gifted comediennes.
