I ain't hatin' on this version. If any band with a female lead singer had to make a cover of Nirvana, it would have to be Evanescence. (That or One-Eyed Dool, but that's not the point!)
I'm not a big Evanescence fan, and I still think Nirvana's version of this song is better (cos Kurt Cobain had this amazing/sad power in his voice) but I do really like this cover.
Kurt's version sounds (as usual) more apathetic/suffering, Amy Lee's version feels more lonesome/mourning. Consistent with all of their music/styles; they both have plenty of emotion and hard experiences, trust me. :)

And let's be honest here, kidos, her singing is sub-par. She'd loose first round on X-Factor. She misses many of her notes with a slightly off frequency (or searches for them mid-note) and she doesn't use the tricks to enunciate words in music like a well trained artist would. A perfect example would be Alanis Morissette, who, at the beginning of her career, was also self admittedly untrained. But I'll admit that she's had a little more practice since their first album came out. it SUCKED.
Look, I don't give a crap about Cobain. Sure, this group has talent, but to be successful you have to compete with the very best. I'm afraid that they're a "B Movie" (like Nightwish) in a sea of smash hit 5 star flicks. They had one OK song and then blew away like a tumbleweed. It's not being mean. It's just life. It's not...bad. You can't really do a GREAT cover of nirvana because the original will ALWAYS blow you out of the water, and the way she plays this is rather hesitant, so it does not quite pan out as well. All in all, they don't do as badly as some and do much better than most.
The real Amy Lee was discovered by Joe Elliott of Def Leppard along with unknown Kurt Cobain in '83 at age 15. Not only does the lead singer use her name, but Amy Lynn for Pres Jimmy Carter's daughter. Kurt's friend Kathleen Hanna's band Amy Carter. Kurt would be proud! Amy loves Nirvana! And besdies, Nirvana are hard rock/grundge while Evanescence are gothic rock. They are both ROCK bands, but different types, yet both awesome. Amy wasn't trying to sing like Kurt. She isn't copying him.
I may not know the man inside-out, but if there's one thing I'm sure of about Kurt, it's that he hated macho, tough-guy bullshit. And a look through the comments of here of people claiming to be his fans...well....judge for yourself, I guess.

I love Evanescence. I think Amy Lee has an amazing voice. I think Heart Shaped Box is an amazing song, and Nirvana is the best freakin band to ever walk the planet. But... Amy's level of emotion in this song doesn't even begin to compare to the emotion Kurt put into every performance.

And let's be honest here, kidos, her singing is sub-par. She'd loose first round on X-Factor. She misses many of her notes with a slightly off frequency (or searches for them mid-note) and she doesn't use the tricks to enunciate words in music like a well trained artist would. A perfect example would be Alanis Morissette, who, at the beginning of her career, was also self admittedly untrained. But I'll admit that she's had a little more practice since their first album came out. it SUCKED.

This is a beautiful cover. Every artist knows when you cover someone elses work the original will always be 1#.
Amy Lee's vocals mixed with these deep lyrics are really powerful, but it will always stay a Nirvana classic.

It's not...bad. You can't really do a GREAT cover of nirvana because the original will ALWAYS blow you out of the water, and the way she plays this is rather hesitant, so it does not quite pan out as well. All in all, they don't do as badly as some and do much better than most.

I love Evanescence. I think Amy Lee has an amazing voice. I think Heart Shaped Box is an amazing song, and Nirvana is the best freakin band to ever walk the planet. But... Amy's level of emotion in this song doesn't even begin to compare to the emotion Kurt put into every performance.
