For those of us that have this kind of insanity inside us already, this song is anything but maddening. Rather, it's cathartic. Just for the trivia, it's often the sweet, innocent types who have that mind-boggling capacity for the bizzarre... and conversely, the people we think are freaks are often the gentle souls. Love you, Kate.
My friend and I were blasting this in her car on Halloween on our way to a Haunted House...best day ever. Everyone on the street looked horrified. Amazing. (sigh) I love Kate Bush. : )
What an awesome way to finish an album. When I listen to Kate's music I get really happy and proud of myself, because I could have been listening to crap radio music... but instead of that I'm listening to art... real music.
According to what Kate said, this is basically a song about someone so scared of life and love to lock everything out of himself:
"No stranger's feet
Will enter me
I wash the panes
I clean the stains away"
The only solution is facing the enemy and this is the meaning of the "Hee-haw" at the end of the song (which was actually inspired by the scene of Pinocchio turning into a donkey)
very tori amos,or vica versa. was there an acoustic version of this song on the radio in about '94. the lyrics sound familiar,if any 1 knows, please do tell. there were no donkey sounds in that song though.
Tori straight up ripped off Kate. I know, that sounds harsh, but millions of people agree. There are some songs that are almost note for note Kate songs. Kate was far ahead of her time and only now, are many people discovering her. Sad, as I have been a devotee for 30 years. She is by far in large, the best songwriter of our time.... in my opinion.
Back when the song came out i understood it was about being a prisoner in your house, domestic violence and the hauntings that we place upon ourselves... there for interpreting.... but lyrics and music still capture me....as far as the "braying" of mules men are jackasses...
I used to assume this song was about domestic violence and I was disappointed when I realized it really was just about ghosts and people turning into donkeys.
How could you be disappointed? What do you expect from Kate Bush? Mundane domestic violence? Give me ghosts and people turning into donkeys any day and keep the trash of domestic violence in the trailer park.
Kate once said the mule was a reference to the "bad boys" of Pinocchio being turned into mules, which she found to be pretty terrifying in the Disney film. It's more of that "house is alive/humans turn in to beasts to get away/Tamerlane" thing that informs the entire song.
@Yetaxa According to what KB said, basically it's a song about someone so scared of live and love to lock himself in, closing everybody "out of the door":
No stranger's feet
will enter me
I'll wash the panes
I'll clean the stains away
The image of a house like a human being was actually inspired by The Shining (the book, not the movie)
my dance show audition song w/ mix up of other house songs but not like cheerleading style..... still i never saw anyone do an audtion like what i planned to do but i'll never do it.........
@iloveeveryoneontv maybe nobody else will do an audition the way you planned because they too planned to do it but never did. Maybe you should go out and audition with that in mind.
This reminds me of me and another friend! Great photo's! Thankyou for sharing this! <3 <3

This song exemplifies Kates ability to come up with music that is surprising & highly original.
I've lost count of how many songs she has written that no-one else would ever get near composing.

stop comparing people... i'm so sick of that crap..
yes tori amos sounds SOMEWHAT similar to kate bush.. because they have similar taste in chord progressions. That doesn't mean they ripped them off.
Anyways, I love this song. Thank you Kate Bush for doing your thing and not holding back!!
