I biked there today and luckily there was 1 parking spot left in the small parking lot before the gated entrance. For future reference, does anybody know where else we can park? Residential maybe?
i admire you bro, you live life how it should be lived. You show that mountain biking is an art; the swift, sharp turns, to the technical creek sections. Get dirty... Ride on...
What a great post! Thank you. I used to ride this trail monthly for 3-4 years in medical school, now I can only reminisce on the good times. Trail looks like it's a bit run down, and the rock gardens are more pronounced but great shots. Any posts from the Ken Burton trail? That one is equally challenging if not more! -Putang
This is how we do it, since we ride the trails and other mtbrs folks we leave a note so that we all can pitch in and bring shovels and we fix the trails while riding specially when it rains there's about 15 to 20 of us in our group. That's my best advices!
looking 4 a group to ride with', im new here in LA, more on downhill . and im in my late 40's. i want to join any group here in san fernando valley,LA. .....
Just attepted to ride this trail on Sunday the 13th 2009. The rain has created a giant river that ran completely through the trail, and completely wiped out about 60% of the trail. All we have now is this great video that reminds us how great this trail was. Thanks for posting two years ago.
Just rode El "P" and it was sad to see the devastation that this fire caused. Singletrack is still there but a few sections have been washed out by debri and sand. Most of it is burned and I noticed an eerie orange glow on rocks from fire retardant that was dropped from the air. It has to be a health hazard. Hope El Prieto returns to us soon. Godspeed.
Burt to a crisp.....so much ash that it becomes a health hazard if any wind comes along. I tried it the other day, and had to hike back out from all the ash in the air. All of Brown is charred beyond recognition. Sad
I just rode this trail today, since the big station fire. Brown mountain is completely burned. Everything was unrecognizable. It looked like a dessert wasteland. El Prieto was burned about 90 %. The trail is still there and somewhat rideable. Alot of erosion was observed, blocking the fireroads and the trail. No tree's, srubs, or anything. Just a bunch of burned soil. Everything was completely burned. Saw alot of dead rabbits, and rats burned to death. It was quite depressing.
This is a fun after work trail if you ride it as often as I do, it gets old after a few rides -just like anything I guess- regardless it a bit technical and the conditions now are a bit dry, the river is starting to die out??? I wonder if someone built a damn or something? Anyway want to kick it up a notch? keep going up Brown and jump into the Ken Burton trail that will put a hair or two on your chest haha.
I did it last Sunday solo and I didn't see one snake, lizzard or mtn Lion but I'm sure there somewhere. The veggies are abundant thats true but very manageable I think they make the trail more adventurous if anything. word of advice the trail might have thinned out a few inches so stay away from the edges, cover up your legs and arms just in case your allergic to plants and falling on to rocks. have fun.
im doing this ride LA marathon weekend for my 2nd time'lol'first time I was scared because of the canyons or drops but now im going to ignore them,,good trail!
If you're a hiker, best to stay away from these trails. Lots of speeding bicycles here both on trail and paved road and I've had numerous close calls with my kids getting hit. A handful of cyclist are truly rude and obnoxious while a majority are friendly and courteous. Please report any close calls you encounter with the

crazy thing we were gonna ride some where else but becasue of the weather we ended up there today that is the trail i was today LOL man first time trail there
there was a man that said to ride the obsticales and not go around them casue it mess up the trail the water stopers i guess people ride around and widen the trail the things in the trail like steps or whatever prevent ruts from forming i always learn something
That switchback of death at 5:30 was impressive, good riding! I have yet to try that spot, too unforgiving to me as you can see the tree tops below on the turn.

Usually a trail bike with 4-6" of travel will do. Even at 5" is an overkill. I ride my all mountain bike as a trail bike too (AC1) and it is a bit more than you need. Once in a while I ride my hardtail there too.
You know you're riding the illegal short cut in that video.... those cuts have been made by people who didn't want to do the short climbs on the original trail. One of my faves, and I'm there at least once a week.
GREAT job at capturing the "El Prieto Experience"! It's been one of my favorite singletracks since 1995, and it's only 6 miles from my house! BTW, what filming equipment did you use? It did a terrific job for you. Thanks for posting this. I'm forwarding it to another buddy to give him a sense of what it's like to descend El Prieto.
Thanks, I tried to fit the entire trail in so that people can get an idea of how it is. I used a bullet cam that connects into the inputs of a Canon miniDV camera that I have in my bag.
dude! i rode this thing for the first time about 3 weeks ago! its a sick ass single track! and was a bit technical but my nrs 3 handled it pretty well might i say
Great video. This is an awesome, quick trail. Been there many times, very technical. I was just there today (hot!), but I decided to take the back fireroad down the mountain due to my friend's equipment problem on his bike.
Tommorow morning I'm going to go to the top of Brown Mountain, but debating whether or not to come back on El Prieto and risk the poison oak (I'm super allergic).
On a related note, have you ridden the Ken Burton trail? How is that one?
Just went last weekend, it's very dry. Didn't pay close attention to the poison oak, but usually it is bad. Stream crossings are dried out. Trail is clear so you won't rub up against any. You should be fine.
