What is even more amazing is EVERY SINGLE person was perfect for the role on TNG. If they had chosen anyone else to play any one role(especially Picard and Data) the show could have quite possibly failed. Everyone from Picard to Chief O'Brien to Guinen to Q was played by the perfect actor. It was a flawless series. I somehow hope one more movie is made.
Star Trek TNG was such an amazing series. It reached out to the "next generation" to love Star Trek not growing up with the original. I grew up with TNG, the first episode coming out when I was 5 and was hooked. It has always been a huge part of my life, fueling my love for space when I was a child.
I love this show. In retrospect, I can see how it seemed very odd to have a new crew and a new ship. But overall, what made this show work so well was that it was just plain fun. I also loved the ship, it looked very comfortable.
Every new Star Trek has a new crew that you have to get used to. But as long as the characters are interesting, and the stories are compelling, that's all that matters.
@sammycut1 I agree. Star Trek has such a vast and interesting concept that if the storytelling had always been limited to just to one crew, i.e. Kirk & Spock's crew, it would have been a huge waste.
@sammycut1 i havent seen anything beyond TNG. im too attached to the characters and maybe thats why i dont feel drawn to DS9 or any of the others. Are there any good episodes in the other series that would get me interested ?
The first season was bad for three huge reasons- 1. They had 9 primaries, TOS had 7, 8 counting Chapel occasionally, so too many, Yar had to go, Worf just was the better, more interesting choice, and fit the role more 2. They were trying to be the 1960s Trek in the 1980s, and whereas TOS is STILL beloved for being campy and brilliant, being campy in 1987 is... sad and 3. They had BIG shoes to fill. Season 2- better
By Season 3, fully filled, and they WERE TNG, to be legends in their own right.
I really liked Yar and thought that she would have gotten better as the series went on (like all of the other characters did). Ironically, though DC was only a regular for the first 22 or so eps., her character made the most impact in the history of the show ("Yesterday's Enterprise", the existence of Sela, etc.).
@YouTracy For me I think its good now in retrospect, but not so much on its own. I love to go back and watch it, but I don't know if I would love it on its own.
Is this not a direct blow to the Star Trek vs Star Wars feud.....George Lucas' company does the special effects for Star Trek....what's next Picard turns out to be a Jedi???
ILM did the effects for ST II; III; IV; VI; Generations; First Contact; and Star Trek '09 in addition to the pilot episode of TNG.
Nothing to earth shattering here. ILM has had a long history with Trek as well as Star Wars. I don't know why people can't just love both franchises. Sigh.
I know its shocking, but there was a time when people were Sci-Fi fans, not just Star Trek or Star Wars fans. People enjoyed both. This 'feud' is like listening to someone argue about the difference between lasagna and pizza; They're both made out of the same basic ingrediants. Shit.
@sondano Yes yes we all know-a black knight, a boy with a magic sword, and old wizard, and rescuing the princess before destroying the black knight's castle=Star Wars. I'm just saying that the two 'franchises' are like two sides of the same coin, and you're a fool for only liking one without the other.
@CanadianRedNeck1 ILM made SFX for ST since TMP. But it's not those effects that make ST what it is and way superior to Star Wars. It's the vision the stories the brilliant writing the characters and the cast. Star Trek does not need fancy SFX to be good. Star Wars by contrast would be toast without them as the story is pretty dumb the writing is mediocre the cast is adequate at best.
Making Picard french was a odd choice, Especially since Patrick Stewart has a thick english accent , He could have easily been written as a British character and it would have made no difference.
They should've brought back the original cast instead. I heard that that was actually being considered initially, and the original actors (and fans of the original series) were sorely disappointed.
The first 3 seasons would've gone much more smoothly, I'd bet.
Bringing the original cast back to TV was never considered in the 1980s. The original cast weren't disappointed that they didn't get asked, but some of them may have been a little jealous. And most fans of the original cast watched The Next Generation either from the beginning or gradually started watching it when they heard how good it was. Also, it's generally accepted that Season 3 was the season the show really hit its stride, although the first two seasons were pretty good, too.
You're close, but your facts are a little off. In the late 1970s, the original cast was going to come back to TV in a show called Star Trek: Phase II. However, before production began, the studio decided to make The Motion Picture instead. Then, in the mid 1980s, The Next Generation was created. And just as I said above, no consideration was ever given to bringing the original cast back to TV during this time, or any time since, for that matter.
One the biggest mistakes made on the effects front was shooting everything on video. It was quicker and cheaper but shortsighted since the visuals from the first two seasons looked dated.
Oh yeah! I keep telling folks, this "Star Trek vs. Star Wars" nonsense is played out. ILM also did the effects for the Star Trek movies. It was the success of Star Wars in '77 that made Paramount get to work on STar Trek: The Motion picture in '79. In the reverse, George Lucas has said that it was the Original STar Trek that helped his love of science-fiction and thus, helped him make Star Wars.
@StarshipMaxima Star Trek and Star Wars are too very different animals there is very very little similarity between them and it was not SW that made Para get to work on TMP but the success of Close encounters of the third kind. That was the one that convinced Para that SW's success was not just an anomaly and there was a big market for science fiction movies --- not that SW is science fiction but nevermind.
God I miss John Tesh. He was the only reason I watch ET b/c he's so professional and down-to-earth as an anchorman. One of my fondest memories was the Star Trek make-up effects crew transforming John as a Klingon Warrior. Those were good times.
I miss John Tesh on ET, too. It seems that there's been a revolving door of male co-hosts for Mary Hart since then, but none of them have been as good as Tesh. I think Bob Goen was the first one after Tesh, and he probably just got the job for being a Tesh lookalike, what with the big forehead and all. (Which was also good for putting Klingon makeup on!)
No, the producers knew about her nude pics in Playboy before she was even cast. She left the show on her own late in the first season to pursue other interests. In other words, because of sheer stupidity.
YouTracy, if you're saying Crosby's departure as her fault then you're wrong. The writers are to blame. They didn't give Denise enough flavor to dwell more into her Lt. Yar character. She kept asking them to, but they kept beating her around the bush and she got tired of it and there you go.
No, I'm not wrong. She told them she wanted more to do but didn't get it, so she quit. She didn't get fired. That makes it HER fault. They may not have given her a lot to do that season, but the cast consisted of NINE people that year, which meant that not everyone was going to have a chance to shine. Eventually she would have been given more screen time, but she was just too damn impatient.
I'll have to logically agree with you on that one. Yes, Crosby should've hanged in there for the next few seasons so future writers such as Ron D. Moore, Robert H. Wolffe, Jeri Taylor, and others would've granted her wish just like they gave Marina Sirtis hers.
Exactly. Gene was so miffed about it that he insisted that Yar die a death that was completely without purpose (to mirror Crosby's leaving the show for no apparent reason). He wasn't going to give her a heroic way out if she was going to jump ship so early.
Ironically, her leaving made for some great dramatic episodes for the rest of the crew revolving around losing Tasha.
Cool! That was some old memories. I had graduated High School in 1987. I remember hating the candy cane looking deflector on the Enterprise D. And I hated the shape, but I got used to it.
