ok to comment on onegin65 you never show distaste for the masters. Weak voice not her prime but a fantastic preformance as only the worlds greatest Norma to date can perforem. Its not always about a pitch or a note
did she sing this roll in b.a. before she lost weight? her voice sounds different than her later recordings.still the unmistakable callas but somehow changed.
She was must been about 26 years old but what depth and richness and pathos already in her voice. Then she was just a sad angel and had yet become a goddess.. Thanks!
Agreed. Barenboim fell in love with the cellist not the woman. Sad. Du Pre should have stuck with Richard Goode, a much finer pianist and human. Can you imagine the music they would have made together?
From a near barbarian in the ranks of opera, literally, I stopped what I was doing when I heard this. I've heard many versions of the aria, including those of Callas. It brought tears to my eyes.
I have only heard that her voice declined as years passed, but never knew that I would actually be able to hear a difference. This is the voice I've never heard from a mere human. Absolute extraordinary.
Maria Callas, you always the best, when your time the recording and other sound system is not as good as in now but You could show your capability that you are pure Soprano or Opera Singer incomparable through The simple equipment. Many people lost you so much.Actually They are longing to see you because you are not in this world again some people must be seeing other opera singer that proof not like you their performance,Yoa are still far away the best ,best, best than them.
The sound of the radio broadcast is so good for that year! Incredible to be able to hear that and so interesting to compare to what she would keep and let with the following years. The voice is thicker and creamy, with so many colours and intentions...and so flexible at the time. Thank you!!!
Maria Callas was the greatest soprano of the 20th century. Her Norma is unrivaled. I loved hearing this radio broadcast from Argentina in 1949. Callas was not yet slim diva she became in the 50's and 60's, this is why her voice sounds different. When she lost weight, her voice changed. This was marvelous! The only problem I have is the announcer pronounced her name as if Callas was a Spanish last name. It should sound like this: KA-LAS
Gondorado, informate.
It is certainly not from her 40ths or het 50ths. Listen to her beginning word "Casta".... She sings "Custu". Indeed, where is her beautiful open and clear aaaaaa , like in her 50ths recordings? She does'nt open her mouth anymore. No, this is certainly Maria in het 70ths. And in a for that time a bad recording. Where is your good taste ?
@qklq42 Perhaps the poor quality of the recording, but this in 1949 from Buenos Aires. Maria Callas could not sing Casta Diva this way in the 60 and 70
I listen to all the Casta Divas - by all the divas! - but I keep coming back to Callas. And for you younger fans - she was, during her lifetime, always confronted by critics who said she owed her successful career to being a good 'singing actress' with an adequate voice. I like to think she is somewhere above us - as she always was - knowing that it is her voice that continues to inspire and delight. So little of her art was caught on film, but the voice is there for all time.
I will never console for the tragic end of such a unique being. I cannot understand all the musicians and all the people who knew Callas personly how could they let her have such a tragic end.
@gaugin1903 Gaugin - This tragic end was to a large degree her own doing. I've watched the documentaries and read Menighini's biography, Maria Callas Mia Moglie. It's very sad. Zeffirelli speaks about her later years and has made a - not so very good film, too personally involved - about the end of Callas. It's called Callas Forever and imagines what he might have done for her these last years. Jeremy Irons plays the role of Zeffirelli himself. The film is in Italian.
do you think they loved her? People that talented are never loved, they are envied to death. Dont you know the story of Jacqueline Du Pre? the greatest cellist of the 20th century? when she was struck by multiple sclerosis her husband Daniel Barenboim deserted her. That is why it is called Tragic - the Tragic Fate has been described by the Tragedians 3000 years ago ;)
@LohengrinT : I had the privilege of seeing Jacqueline du Pre in concert.. devastatingly powerful and moving.. and that was only her music. There was a movie/documentary of her life, and, as far as I recall, it appears she wasnt that easy a person. As for Callas, no matter what, she owns that aria ad infinitum, saecula saeculorum, forever & ever. How can anyone keep singing while expressing such tremendous grief, & doing so so profoundly? I know I cdn't, thats why I didn't make singing my career.
@espinaca79 You're not the only one who asks this question. Having grown up in the US in the 60-70's and seen the documentaries about Callas, I think she admired Onassis because she was an American of Greek descent and was always searching for social acceptance. There are some very fine video documentaries on her life and do try to find them. I bet most of them can be seen in small segments on youtube, but do make the effort to order them . It is a tragic and fascinating life history.
Imagine being a Diva and 99 out of 100 men that approach you are gays! The 1 that is straight is too intimidated by you and is afraid to approach you. Onassis was Artistically Blind - he wasnt able to see the Diva - he was treating Callas the way a man treats a woman - they played the Love Game, it was true and passionate and had all of the consequences - if she had married a refined Gay man (like Sutherland did) she would have never experienced Love!
@espinaca79 He was a bad boy and very often women, particularly women who have led a quiet life, who have been nice girls, are attracted to bad boys! I never found him attractive, the say the least, but I also know that you cannot always judge people on their appearance!
@espinaca79 -Not always people get in love with the right and good people but with the persons they need. I think she wanted good sex, that `s why she fell in love with Onasis.
@espinaca79 I guess he had charisma and some type of manly sex appeal that was lacking with her husband Meneghini. Maybe she wasn't use to a man trying to woo her Onassis did in the beginning.
What a pity that precious recordings of Calls in her prime are such poor quality!!
In those glorious 5 years (1947-52) her voice lacked all flaws that attracted later criticism and she truly was the world's best singer, matching superb acting skills with powerful voice and technical perfection
She made me cry at the end... I find her singing so enigmatic because her voice was not that good but the way she sang was mindblowing with so much character, presence, feeling and depth. WHOA!
@espinaca79 So right in your analysis. Tosca in the 50'a and 50's just listen. the voice technically perhaps not the very best biut you will never hear what Puccini meant in Tosca's character sung so faithfully and realistically by anybody else at that time, now, nor probably ever again.
@espinaca79 By good do you mean "beautiful?" I forget who the singer was (might have been Wilhelmine Schröder-Devrient) about whom Wagner said, "Her voice was better than beautiful." Some of the worlds most beautiful and moving singing is done by voices that are not terribly pretty. Ethan Mordden said it well when he wrote Callas "sang as if she had the most beautiful voice in the world, and sang so beautifully she might have as well had such a voice. "
@Shahrdad It depends on your concept of beauty. Her drama, her depth and passion are characteristics that do not have anything to do with a more lyric, ear-friendly melodic kind of singing style which is considered to be more "beautiful". Serafin described her voice as "a big voice" and he never described her singing as "beautiful". Callas found truth in the music and sang it with more drama and passion than anybody else.
@espinaca79 I think we're saying the same thing. To some, all beautiful singing means is someone making pretty sounds; to others, it's the music that the voice creates, regardless of the beauty of the voice itself. Serafin actually described Callas' voice as "Una grande vociaccia," which translates as "An ugly voice, but also a great voice." Whether or not one likes the pure sound of the Callas voice, the music that is created is often breathtakingly beautiful in and of itself.
@Shahrdad Yes, I understand what you mean. What a gift Maria gave the world. I mean, it's so difficult to find unique interpretations like hers. Serafin knew he was working with some one special, wasn't he? Thanks for responding.
yes Monsieur jacquesurlus, you are absolutely right, I love your choice of words: CALLAS was the INCARNATION OF ALL OPERA. There never has, nor there ever will be someone like her. She was an always will be a phenomena!

I think I have probably heard all her recordings of Casta Diva. This one, to my mind, is the best (and there are no bad ones!). Many, many thanks for this gem.

Nice comment. Maria Callas is indeed the biggest diva of all time! It was an extraordinary interpreter and a fabulous tragedian!
