Love this car. I am 22 and it has always been a dream of mine to own one. My aunt used to have one until sadly my cousin got in a car accident and totaled it. I hopefully will get one someday. I have a question.
Does it run smooth, Do you have to take it in often?
@EmbraceLife89 Hey I am only 19 but i have a 75 camper these bus's are easy to keep up,learn how to work on them and it will be really cost effective. Taking them to shop's is really unnecessary they are as simple as they get, heck right now i am almost done rebuilding my engine.
@maximadog yes, me my wife and both my son and daughter. my daughter sleeps in her bed at night surrounded by various stuffed herbie the love bugs.. :-)
why oh why did i watch this....brings back memories of my dad and i working on vws when i was still in diapers up to about 8 years ago...over 40 years (for me)....he loves them - i hate them - all but the beatle convertible....there isn't much we didn't put them through or do to them (including sand and street buggies)...as well as a move from s.cal to texas in one very similar to pickles...thanks for the nitemares - lol j/k - nice restore job....
We travelled around the US, Canada and Mexico in one JUST like this in '81! My parents bought it then sold it in Anaheim after 3 months touring. It was a big deal for us Australian kids to have a holiday like this. Wish my folks had taken more pictures of it! We now have a '76 Dormobile conversion, nearly perfect condition (only 40,000 original miles).
@orchidkombi awesome! I love hearing about people preserving these oldie but goodies. i have a 1974 non-westy bus that I keep in storage to protect it from the horrendous heat and rain down here in south louisiana. You can see it in my other videos--it's orange.
I had a 77, yellow and white, with the HUGE sunroof. What great memories traveling up and down PCH with the surfboards strapped on top and the kids in the back. Nice little memory maker, that bus was. . .
what a beautiful bus, of all the vw colours i always loved that green, I have a 72 westfalia its pumpkin orange . these vans are getting rare in central british columbia . but can always find the parts for another summer of vw freedom!!
When that little boy grows up, the trips with the family in the bus is what he is going to remember--sleeping in the bunk as you roll down the highway , waking up somewhere new the next morning, not the video games you bought him or the Nikes
@SelbstProduktion Well, this one is gone. We sold it last early last year to a couple in Florida. However, we keep our orange 1974 bus named "Kombia" and I'm sure he or his sister will inherit Kombia one day. Look at my other videos to see Kombia for yourself. Thanks.
we got one in the same coulour (taiga green) and as camper with westfalia roof we did many trips with it (france, croatia, italy) its got 240000 km but its still runs very good i came back from the trip with the bus to italy today ....please response ....ps.wich engine do you got in that bus???
sk88ball, the engine was indeed a 2.0L ( 2000cc ) aircooled engine. I no longer have Sweet Pickles anymore unfortunately, so still have Kombia -- our 1974 standard bus.
@starbucksmunky We sold Sweet Pickles because I had four air cooled VWs and two other cars. I wanted to get another ( a 1981 Vanagon ) and my wife has set a limit for me of no more than six cars at a time. :)
They are still making them in south America, and they still make what they call the cousin of the bus, the new Routan. Rear engine busses were not up to par with USA's new safety ratings and regulations, even with the protection they already had. A 1973 > bus can withstand a pretty hefty blow.
Volkswagen made Vanagons after busses, but those too, were rear engined. Safer by miles though.
They pretty much stopped making busses because they didn't have 40 airbags and 5* crash test.
Well pretty much because people can't drive for shit anymore. They rely upon technology to save them the burden of paying attention behind the wheel. Have you heard of the new Volvo "safety feature" that stops the car if you fail to stop and saves you from crashing?
Seriously, put down the cell phone, tell your kids to shut the fuck up, roll down the window, slow down and pay attention. Just enjoy the ride.
I had a VW camper back in the day. Bought it for £90 as a non runner. Spent all summer & a £1000 fixing it up. New interior, paint, several new panels & dissy. Sounded, looked & run sweet after i'd finished. Good old days.
Wow memories. I had a 77 same color and everything inside and out. I really miss her but had no choice. She started to rust underneath from rarely being driven and sitting outside :(
Before i was born my dad had one of these 10 years older in red and yellow. It looked like superman! He used to live in it with my older brother. He slept in the trunk. Lol....
Thanks for the amazing posting. It brought back wonderful memories. I had a 76 Westy that I restored to original. It took 1st Place at several Central FL VW shows back in 1991 The music is perfect. We had every option except AC. We even had the huge side tent that made our camping trips so much fun. Longest Road trip was 1989 and 1990 when we went 2400 miles round trip to Michigan and back and a 10 day 10 state road trip. Ours had a 2.0 Porsche engine and an original Borg Warner Auto Tranny.
We haven't taken a trip that long yet, but then my work doesn't allow me to be gone very long. For now, we just go day camping at parks near where we live and hope that one day, if I can retire before I'm 90, we will be able to roam the country in Kombi!
I could not agree more. It amazes me how efficiently designed and well engineered these machines were. However, it amazes me even more how, as a society, have traded this simplicity for huge debt heaps in order to "look cooler." I think coming generations realize that being drowned in debt actually looks stupid!
I bought Kombi for $4500 cash. Kombi had a fairly new engine, but still needs some rust work around the window sills. Kombi also needs a little brake work done, but he's a great bus and a lot of fun to take out and drive around and do "day camping" at the park with the kids!
Awesome! My parents used to have a '71 camper in white we drove down to Baja in the 70s. Does yours have the "bed" that stretches across the front seats and steering wheel? That's where I always ended up (and kept honking the horn). Happy Traveling!
A couple of very lucky kids :) I'd give anything to have grown up with an old VW in the fam
