Great tip, but author doesn't seem to know the difference between OK and Apply.  OK makes a setting permanent (aka after XYZ program is closed that preference will remain). Apply makes a setting temporary. In other words if you're pressing OK, Apply has no function. If you did press apply, you'd need to press cancel to get out of the dialog.
