This class had the possibility to use the diesel engines thanks to the schnorchel. That way, they were able to cover thousands of km without needing to surface.

@sajuuk212 they were not one unit, when running silent, they would have used the electric motor and could not have been picked up on sonar, but the commander had obviously made the call to not use the much slower electric motor...
