Mitch Espe use to be Benise' so called duo, but i guess Roni's head got too big and pushed Mitch away...SAD!! Because Mitch can play circles around Ron!!
Each Benise performance is an amazing, inspired superlative production. He brings in richly gifted talent and showcases the true beauty of the music, the musicians, and the dancers. The whole is a transcendent experience to witness and celebrate.
this guy is nothing but mediocre, a rock guitarist who tried to learn spanish style without the effort of learning it right. A pick? what a joke. his chords and melodies are novice and cleche. using a pick to play fast rock leads. cant even play tremelo
anyone who thinks hes great obviously knows nothing about guitar. NO!!!! true flamenco-classical-spanish guitarist would EVER use a pick. if u want to see real spanish players check out vicente amigo, paco de lucia, jeronimo maya you
I've noticed that people who speak as critically & gracelessly as you have here often either don't feel good about their own skills, or don't have any themselves. And interestingly enough, armed with no ability & merely some untested knowledge ABOUT technique, they even set themselves up as snooty subject matter experts, assuming their own ability to judge both the skill level & artistic taste of others. Oh the irony. Speaking of novice & cliche...
@Zaaxun I have to agree.. I had never seen him play and then tuned into his pbs special.. same ol licks over and over and over to adnausium.. BUT,, he is a showman and there is alot of room out there in the world for showman.. You gotta hand it to him, he has marketed hiimself very well.. But yeah, as far as a great spanish guitarist,, nope.. totally agree..Simon would say, self indulgent act.. lol. 35 year pro guitarist here speaking, so not just an uneducated opinion.
@Zaaxun Whilst I agree with you about Benise being a mediocre failed rock guitarist and that his ability leaves much to be desired, I think your dogmatic statement that no TRUE flamenco-classical-spanish guitarist would use a pick is ridiculous. I have studied classical guitar and can play fingerstyle competently but also choose to use a pick when playing Spanish for many reasons not least it gives greater speed and control and.......well I like the sound of a pick better then fingers!
.......and to continue, there are some exceptional players who I know have mastered both disciplines but choose to use a pick......such as Jorge Strunz. Are you telling me he isn't a real guitarist? The players you have named are all flamenco players so of course the don't use a pick.........but nuevo flamenco and world fusion players often do. it's not a sin! but what is wrong is the recognition Benise seems to be getting for his second rate, badly executed and poorly phrased fodder!
I remember this show, I was there that night, only not in any of the seats. I was working as a volunteer usher there, got to see it for free and got really close to the stage, too. The feeling of being in that theatre when he was there is unrilaled, I haven't felt anything like it since, and you can really tell he loves the music. I knew there was a meet and greet too, but it was only those who paid a little extra. I was at the signing though, at the end of the vid, but you can't see me, sadly.
He is so sweet. I went to his concert in Oakland, he talked to us and let me take his picture up close. It still reminds me of that wonderful concert.
