I'm not Jewish but I believe the correct spelling is 'schlemazl' not 'schlemozzle.' The distinction has been given a psychoanalytic twist by Eric Berne I believe. The schlemeil is passive aggressive; he expresses his hostility by spilling the soup and then apologizing. Or else, his goal is forgiveness: he spills the soup in order to be forgiven, using the other person as a tool in this maneuver. The schemazl can be seen as a masochist, wanting to punish himself or feel sorry for himself.
@dcspaced Actually I think we are both wrong. It should be schlemazel; the mazel being the same word as in mazel tov. I will change the title. This has been here for 5 years without attracting much attention, and suddenly two comments in a couple of days.
