In the movie, it's very easy to indict Erik or Christine. But Christine's had a rough life, the Phantom has an unreal amount of control over her and so on. She's torn between two people she truly loves. And Erik, he was mentally abused, a recluse, and probably a little unstable before that. How do we expect him to have acquired social skills and recognize he can't control people? That is what people did to him, and that's what he learned to do rather than be controlled. It makes sense, sadly....
This is Minnie Driver (Carlotta). She had her voice dubbed because she couldn't do the opera singing of her character, but she did sing this song for the credits.
You know, if I saw Erik wondering the streets of London, where I live, without his mask on, I would assume he was a victim of a housefire or something and look away in order to try not to be rude by looking at him with a pitying face.
@meghanml723 It never says his name in the movie. In the book how ever it breaks down his life bit by bit. His name was Erik Muliah (although that was the name the man gave himself not his Christan name) He was a real man who lived and stalked in the Opera P. Christine Dia and Raoul were real too. Roul and his brother the Patron wer found dead in the river. Christine, Erik, Antoinette G. were never found.
@iceybloodspell The book never gives him a last name. Just finished reading it. The inspiration may have been an Erik Muliah, but Leroux's original text never gives a surname
@QingwenNaWei It's kind of like the Phantom's story and how he's going to have to go through life without love. The person who sings the song is Minnie Driver who plays Charlotta in the movie. I mean any young girl would be flattered if they had two men chasing them, you'd have to make some tough decisions but yes you would be a little bit flattered XD
I dont like Christine in this movie because she is so unnessecarily cruel to Erik. Geez girl, make up your mind and quit torturing Erik. I you want your childhood sweetheart, take him! @sarahsoflyassaphire actually erik says "christine i love you" right before she gives him the ring at the end of the movie :) i think its reallly sweet because he's really the only one who says it
Many think that Christine should have gone with Erik. Yes, I think that too, but I think that Erik needed some time without her, so then he really knows how much he loves her, and she needed time on her own, to realize that it was Erik and not Rauol that she loved. Like in Love Never Dies. Erik became -how can I say this- perhaps a little more kind. His personality improves. And Christine, due to the fact that Rauol is a complete idiot, realizes she has loved Erik all this time.
@SongsJerome Yes, I believe she does. All I know is that he thinks about her and he even sings a song, that to hm means he really can't live without her . And she loved Erik, take Gustave for example, Rauol thinks that Gustave is his child, but wait is there something she has not told him? But yet when Gustave sees Erik's face he screams, even though, he is Erik's son. Sad, but my point is that Christine should have realized that Rauol, someday, wouldn't care for her like he once did.
@angelskiss1001 Me too the entire ending scene i just can't stop crying. Cristine was the only thing that gave him life and she ripped it away from him.
this movie is so tragic & moves me in different places. something so beautiful & unique, something that u must treasure & understand in order to believe. im only 11 & im so in luv with this movie. i feel so different when i watch this movie. haif the world doesnt knows this movie exsists, which iratates me. & another thing which iratates me is that they didnt put the part "no one would listen" in it. such a beautiful movie, & such a beautiful phantom. he was just so alone & wanted to be loved!
I don't know what guy I would pick, in the book the phantom is sort of creepy like just some of the things he says and does to Christine....at one point in the book he ties her up to keep her from killing herself. But throughout the book, even though you find him REALLY CREEPY you still feel sorry for him. But in the book Raoul is kind a gerk to Christine, but he does go through A LOT of trouble to save her.
In Love Never Dies, Christine goes back to the Phantom, because she can't stay away from him. They sleep together the night before her wedding day. BAM. If that's not proof...
@emnem57 Love Never Dies is a musical, not a movie, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber that debuted in England in 2010. Look up the synopsis for it on google. Its shocking!
She loves both of them. She loves Raoul, because of their past. He is said SAFE choice. She loves the Phantom, because of the music and passion he olds. He is the DANGEROUS choice. Christine, in the novel, is very weak and innocent. She choose Raoul, because she needed to go back to the surface and live her life. However, a part of her will always love and be haunted by Erik.
If you look at it, Christine is in a constant struggle with herself. She's at the coming of age point, and she's on that fine line between wanting to maintain her innocence, and wanting to become a woman. To her, Raoul represents innocence, familiarity, and light. On the other hand, Erik represents darkness, mystery, sexuality...So it really could have gone either way. I think Erik really did love her, but because of his past, he didn't really know how to show it in an effective way.
But honestly, could the phantom get another woman? No. Could Raol? Yes. That's why I think Christine should stay with the phantom. She might not be in love with him but she is totally attracted to him and besides, she doesn't really know anything about him so maybe if she got to know him she would fall in love with him...
But honestly, could the phantom find another woman? No. Could Raol? Yes. That's why I think Christine should stay with the phantom. And she might not LOVE him but she is totally attracted to him. Besides who has ever really experienced love at first sight? She could get to know him and then she might love him. Who knows?

@sexslave20 LUCKY! You can sing?! I wish I could. Oh well. Learn 2 sing a little bit, and get on pointe and maybe I can be Meg. I'll take what I can get.
@Llama1077 technically she did. Or did you not see her give the ring to the phntom get in the boat with Raoul and sai away? I'm not talking about her choosing Erik in LND Im talking about her choosing the fop in POTO
@ladidacow1 the first second is a picture of the younger eric in a cage, the part from the movie is when they were exploring his past. The last 2 seconds were older phantom stepping out of the light in the top of the stage..
To all of the people who think Christine should have gotten together with the Phantom: Yes the Phantom loved her for 10 years but she had spent all of that time thinking he was the Angel of Music or a spirit of her father, she was never in love with him. Raoul on the other hand was her childhood sweetheart whom she did look upon in a romantic way. The Phantom was a stalker with a crush. Why do people always forget that Raoul was in her life BEFORE the Phantom ever saw her?
@sarahsoflyassaphire In case you have forgotten, the Phantom MADE Christine for what she was. So she was thankful to him for that. Both Raoul and the Phantom were part of Christine, Raoul was her protector and so was the Phantom but there was a blend of romantic love and childhood memories with Raoul and the Phantom was her tutor, her voice and her guardian. Seriously you're missing the plotline of the story. Both characters were part of Christine's life.
You had a childhood sweetheart? I had one. And if i meet him now, would be awesome, but i doubt that i'll fall in love with him. Because was wonderful when we were children, but now we are different people. I don't know him.
Christine choses Raoul because he is handsome, young and rich, and he's a peerage. While the phantom is older, disfigured, and like i read somewhere, a tortured mentally ill man in real pain. She takes the easy choice.
@sarahsoflyassaphire Not to mention the fact that the Phantom is crazy. We can understand the root of his insanity, pity his experience, and mourn for the actual people who had similar experiences, but would we really wish marriage to a crazy man on our sisters, daughters, friends, and selves? I know that I wouldn't.
@sarahsoflyassaphire Because the Phantom is absolutely seductive, mysterious, charming and a fucking GENIUS. And because he really loves her after all.
It's how they sometimes say: looks aint everything, right? Personality really matters...
bulls**t
PS. Raul didn't grow up with her. He sees her and wonders if Christine remembers him. The Phantom was with her all this time
@but you know. childhood romance doesn't mean a match made in heaven...christine should have seen through the scar. i mean--she should have seen what kind of man the phantom is and what he can be. besides...raoul didn't notice it was christine until she had the lead act and sang "think of me" that was just lame.
@sarahsoflyassaphire True as that may be (I wish she would have gotten together with the Phantom, and I agree with you completely) it just seems like the Phantom would do anything for her...and it would almost be a Beauty and the Beast moment because she'd love him for who he was rather than what he looked like....it just looks cooler with the Phantom and Christine together instead of Raoul and Christine....but you're right....and it would have ruined the storyline
@sarahsoflyassaphire That's not all he was. The movie reduced the entire story and made it something the Musical did not show. Nor did the book(s). She did love the Phantom, but she could not get past her revulsion and desire to have a life beyond the opera and be safe. She learned from Eric and stayed with him in his sanctum. He trained and loved her as no one else could or would and she turned her back on him...as all women say they would not, but still do.
@sarahsoflyassaphire Did you notice that i love you was not said one time? none of the characters said they loved each other.... Just strange thats all.... How do we know who loved who? I love erik he is more deserving of the love from christine than raoul who came from wealth...
@ummmokaywhatever Raoul and Christine said they loved each other during the All I Ask of You scene. And why can't rich people have "one love, one lifetime" too? Erik chose to do horrible things with his life such as manipulate Christine, kill people in order to promote her, and pretend to be her father when she was very vulnerable. He was in no way deserving of Christine's love. Erik's story is tragic, yes, but his only redemption was when he let her go at the end.
@sarahsoflyassaphire Well said. I'm with you on this one. If the people on here were in her position, you know good and well they would choose the good looking, rich, loving man as opposed to the man who tried to KILL the other man. Erik had good intentions (kind of) but was doomed from the start. Pity comes too late, as he says. By the time someones in a position needing that much pity, how much hope is there to change them?
@sarahsoflyassaphire When I was a bit obsessed with this movie and the Phantom I read a lot about it. In the plot Christine, once the Phantom reveals himself to her, is drawn to him in a somewhat sexual desire. While Raoul is her childhood sweetheart and represents innocent love, the Phantom represents a dark passionate temptation so to speak. There is a love triangle. Christine might not "love" the Phantom as he loves her, but she does have an attachment. I do think she was sadistic to come ...
@PeaceRocker01 cont. back at the end just to give him the ring. That was totally unnecessary. She gave the poor thing false hope. If she didn't want to be with him she could have just left with Raoul like the Phantom asked at the end. I despise the character Christine for that reason. Yes, this is just a movie, but I love it lol and I side with the Phantom.
Phantom is so romantic!Yeah he maybe a stalker but he's a romantic one.(unlike mine) In the movie when The Phantom was trying to kill Raoul (About 3 times) I was like "DIE DIE DIE DIE DIE PHANTOM KILL RAOUL PHANTOM RULES!" Raoul lives"DAMN IT!" Anyway the Phantom is awesome! Christine was one in a million who cared and loved him! Raoul could have found someoen else. Christine proves she loves the Phantom when she jumps in to give the Phantom a kiss, and not jumping in to save her "lover"
@popellie26 you might be interested to hear that it has been decided by psychologists that the phantom probably had Aspergers syndrome which causes the sufferer to be inept in social situations i.e love and causes them to be highly intelligent with high IQs and gives them unnatural ability in the arts such as poetry music and drawing, and also causes them to be outcasts from society and be beaten down for it (deformity or not) i know beacuse i have it and have been doing research on it
@GuitarRocker2008 Um I'm sorry, but the Phantom does not have Aspergers syndrome. I know many people with it including my Ex. I also know a man who was born deformed, incredibly talented and lived a life very freaking close to Erik's and he does not have Aspergers syndrome and probably would be pissed for people labeling him, he had enough problems so did Erik. Just cause you have something doesn't mean Erik did. He suffered trauma not from a brain chemical problem.
@SylentPhantom to be fair im basiny evidence off an article in a psychology journal i read once, and similarities i personally found between rics behaviour and the syndrome thogh to be fair ill admit it is a theory however if you did live with people with aspergers im suprised you didt notice the savant complex as it is a major aspect though not necessarily music also i beleive aspergers is brain shape and functon notchemical based otherwise there would be a cure which there isnt
@popellie26 Ummm how you interpret the kiss is fine..many people feel she loved the Phantom in her way but.....her primary reason for doing it was to save Raouls life. Not to get it on with the Phantom. I do think she had feelings for both but...her main reason WAS for Raoul
@popellie26 im sure the difference between a romantic stalker and a unromantic stalker is the looks. i think that if you actually took your time to look into your stalkers background he may not be as strange as he looked. although i am just assuming he isnt some sort of crazy rapist. but my point is, dont be so quick to judging others.
imagine what will happen if you combine the Phantom with Batman, I mean, you'll have the perfect character! he's borned with a deformation, but his rich parents are murdered and he ends up in a circus, he's beaten by the crew, then he escapes under the city and tries to take back all the things society stole from him, so he becomes a crimefighter and later on, a superhero! how about that? lol
this is sad.christean loved the phantom he loved her when she came to the opera house then roul came along and didnt even see her at first then she falls in love with the phantom and then she falls in love with roul and then later on in the movie the phantom messes up one time she cant see that he has been in hole all by him self and was beat when he was a kid so he dont know how to love and forcing her to love him was a way he said i love you.but he lived his life alone cause she didnt see that
I CAN IDENTIFY WITH HIS OASSION AND HIS PAIN. NO ONE TREATS HIM WITH RESPECT- THEY THINK HE'S A MONSTER. HE WASN'T HE WAS JUST UNLUCKY. BUT THE ONES WHO HATE HIM ARE A MONSTER NOT HIM.
Christine is such a bitch! She toys with Erik the entire time. She pretends to feel pity for him, than plans to elope with Raoul right in front of him. She kisses him, to save Raoul. She makes a point to return his ring then rather loudly sings love songs to Raoul. No way that punk Raoul deserved her. Eriks life had been hell, she's his final chance to love, and she rips it away from him
@balletluve As much as I would love to see Erik with Christine, there is no story in that, The Phantom is a victim , you can see that in the end, its a tragedy, if you make Christine choose Erik instead of Raoul, it would be like making Romeo and Juliet live happily ever after, sorry but it is a tragedy, no way thats going to happend cause THERE IS NO STORY IN THAT.....
@UrukHai695 She kissed him cause he never had one before. What had she done to deserve for him to lock her up in a cave, and he knows it. If you love something, let it go. Thats what makes the story so tragic.
SPOILER** Anyway it seems this song is a joke! "Life can be loved alone"...At the very end of the novel the phantom killed himself just because he doesn't want to be lonely anymore .-.
this video and movie reflects about my life. Thats why I feel the phantom is such an iconical charcater he represents those who grew up alone.

@emnem57 Love Never Dies is a musical, not a movie, written by Andrew Lloyd Webber that debuted in England in 2010. Look up the synopsis for it on google. Its shocking!
disney43075 1 year ago

Why do people always forget that Raoul was in her life BEFORE the Phantom ever saw her?
sarahsoflyassaphire 1 year ago 92
@sarahsoflyassaphire In case you have forgotten, the Phantom MADE Christine for what she was. So she was thankful to him for that. Both Raoul and the Phantom were part of Christine, Raoul was her protector and so was the Phantom but there was a blend of romantic love and childhood memories with Raoul and the Phantom was her tutor, her voice and her guardian. Seriously you're missing the plotline of the story. Both characters were part of Christine's life.

@sarahsoflyassaphire
AlaniaB 1 year ago 3
@sarahsoflyassaphire Not to mention the fact that the Phantom is crazy. We can understand the root of his insanity, pity his experience, and mourn for the actual people who had similar experiences, but would we really wish marriage to a crazy man on our sisters, daughters, friends, and selves? I know that I wouldn't.
KGS1188 1 year ago 3

@sarahsoflyassaphire not to mention, The Phantom was manipulative and a killer.
VictorianRomantic 1 year ago
@sarahsoflyassaphire Because the Phantom is absolutely seductive, mysterious, charming and a fucking GENIUS. And because he really loves her after all.
It's how they sometimes say: looks aint everything, right? Personality really matters...
bulls**t
PS. Raul didn't grow up with her. He sees her and wonders if Christine remembers him. The Phantom was with her all this time
SajukkTheEternal 1 year ago
@SajukkTheEternal
They were childhood friends at least, however. He was in the picture until she went into the operahouse, at which point Erik was there.
SvenXIIIfromSteam 1 year ago
@but you know. childhood romance doesn't mean a match made in heaven...christine should have seen through the scar. i mean--she should have seen what kind of man the phantom is and what he can be. besides...raoul didn't notice it was christine until she had the lead act and sang "think of me" that was just lame.
nikorudied 1 year ago
@sarahsoflyassaphire True as that may be (I wish she would have gotten together with the Phantom, and I agree with you completely) it just seems like the Phantom would do anything for her...and it would almost be a Beauty and the Beast moment because she'd love him for who he was rather than what he looked like....it just looks cooler with the Phantom and Christine together instead of Raoul and Christine....but you're right....and it would have ruined the storyline
smalltowngirl2013kw 11 months ago
@sarahsoflyassaphire That's not all he was. The movie reduced the entire story and made it something the Musical did not show. Nor did the book(s). She did love the Phantom, but she could not get past her revulsion and desire to have a life beyond the opera and be safe. She learned from Eric and stayed with him in his sanctum. He trained and loved her as no one else could or would and she turned her back on him...as all women say they would not, but still do.
MageIanBorthwick 11 months ago
@sarahsoflyassaphire Did you notice that i love you was not said one time? none of the characters said they loved each other.... Just strange thats all.... How do we know who loved who? I love erik he is more deserving of the love from christine than raoul who came from wealth...
ummmokaywhatever 11 months ago
@ummmokaywhatever Raoul and Christine said they loved each other during the All I Ask of You scene. And why can't rich people have "one love, one lifetime" too? Erik chose to do horrible things with his life such as manipulate Christine, kill people in order to promote her, and pretend to be her father when she was very vulnerable. He was in no way deserving of Christine's love. Erik's story is tragic, yes, but his only redemption was when he let her go at the end.
sarahsoflyassaphire 11 months ago 2

PeaceRocker01 9 months ago

@popellie26 you might be interested to hear that it has been decided by psychologists that the phantom probably had Aspergers syndrome which causes the sufferer to be inept in social situations i.e love and causes them to be highly intelligent with high IQs and gives them unnatural ability in the arts such as poetry music and drawing, and also causes them to be outcasts from society and be beaten down for it (deformity or not) i know beacuse i have it and have been doing research on it
GuitarRocker2008 6 months ago
@GuitarRocker2008 Um I'm sorry, but the Phantom does not have Aspergers syndrome. I know many people with it including my Ex. I also know a man who was born deformed, incredibly talented and lived a life very freaking close to Erik's and he does not have Aspergers syndrome and probably would be pissed for people labeling him, he had enough problems so did Erik. Just cause you have something doesn't mean Erik did. He suffered trauma not from a brain chemical problem.
SylentPhantom 6 months ago 3
@SylentPhantom to be fair im basiny evidence off an article in a psychology journal i read once, and similarities i personally found between rics behaviour and the syndrome thogh to be fair ill admit it is a theory however if you did live with people with aspergers im suprised you didt notice the savant complex as it is a major aspect though not necessarily music also i beleive aspergers is brain shape and functon notchemical based otherwise there would be a cure which there isnt
GuitarRocker2008 6 months ago
@popellie26 Ummm how you interpret the kiss is fine..many people feel she loved the Phantom in her way but.....her primary reason for doing it was to save Raouls life. Not to get it on with the Phantom. I do think she had feelings for both but...her main reason WAS for Raoul
neverlandbrats 6 months ago
@popellie26 im sure the difference between a romantic stalker and a unromantic stalker is the looks. i think that if you actually took your time to look into your stalkers background he may not be as strange as he looked. although i am just assuming he isnt some sort of crazy rapist. but my point is, dont be so quick to judging others.
Brutaxilos 4 months ago
imagine what will happen if you combine the Phantom with Batman, I mean, you'll have the perfect character! he's borned with a deformation, but his rich parents are murdered and he ends up in a circus, he's beaten by the crew, then he escapes under the city and tries to take back all the things society stole from him, so he becomes a crimefighter and later on, a superhero! how about that? lol

this is sad.christean loved the phantom he loved her when she came to the opera house then roul came along and didnt even see her at first then she falls in love with the phantom and then she falls in love with roul and then later on in the movie the phantom messes up one time she cant see that he has been in hole all by him self and was beat when he was a kid so he dont know how to love and forcing her to love him was a way he said i love you.but he lived his life alone cause she didnt see that

@UrukHai695 She kissed him cause he never had one before. What had she done to deserve for him to lock her up in a cave, and he knows it. If you love something, let it go. Thats what makes the story so tragic.
