it would suck having to hide inside an alter for most of your life and not be able to go around as your true self in your day to day existance. This is a manifestation of that battle inside superman.
I wonder if they were hinting that Superman may feel that CK is holding him back somehow, & he actually dislikes / hates him ? This was perhaps the only GOOD scene in Superman 3, equivalent to Luke meeting the illusory Darth Vader in " Empire ". The rest of Superman 3 was a steaming pile of dog dung.
@knoxvilleguy2 Superman actually says, while beating Clark with a car bumper: "C'mon, chicken! You've been on my nerves a long time!" In the novelization, author William Kotzwinkle wrote, "How long can you eat humble pie?"
@ignoranceandwant - This is the most psychologically loaded - possibly the ONLY such - scene in that entire pointless mess of a movie. Superman & Clark = Like Dr. Jekyll & Mr Hyde. Does Supes actually secretly HATE the meek, soft - spoken perpetual nice - guy Clark Kent ?
@knoxvilleguy2 Fight club expanded on this idea, probably independently. I like to think Superman is fighting himself in this scene. possibly totally in his head. Or physically hitting himself.
He would definitely resent having to act like an idiot most of his life, and at times hate his Clark Kent persona.
I definitely think that there might be a mutual dislike between the almost infinitely - powerful Superman, last survivor of an advanced technologically - superior civilization & Clark Kent, the humble Middle - American farm boy. Definitely like Dr. Jekyl & Mr. Hyde, or maybe even the divide between Mr. Spock & his human heritage that was shown in the original ST series. Anyway, this scene was perhaps the only good in that entire largely - forgettable movie.
