  • My school is doing this show. Today I found out I got Sarah Brown!!

  • I'm playing the dame in our panto and I have to sing this song. Can't wait!

  • Comment removed

  • A true classic of poetry, music & performance.

  • I love this video those 7 dislikes are haters! This is one awsome classic :-D

  • terrible voice, but really cute staging and acting!

  • @DancingElegua She's supposed to be drunk.

  • LOL. Apart from the fact that it sounds like them, why would the studio dub people who don't sing great with other people who don't sing great? Some people are just daft.

  • my school is doing guys and dolls for our spring musical. i am dying to play the part of sarah brown. i already know this song by heart and will be posting a video of me singing it and if u guys could check out my channel soon and let me know what u think it would be great!

  • @ AuronFTW I second that!

  • shes such an amazing singer. I cant stop singing this. even when sober .. I break out in song :)

  • MARLON BRANDO & JEAN SIMMONS, RIP. this movie is now a fave of mine! I had seen bits & pieces thru the years. But am seeing it now and Marlon Brando was even more gifted than I knew. Its a shame that he never did more musicals!

  • Chemistry fuck yeah.

  • @AuronFtw AMEN BROTHER!

  • i was going to sing this song for my singing preformance before i left school :) but lovee this!

  • my favorite song from the movie

  • @samdean2005 mine too! I've known it for years. Petula Clark also did it on one of her albums.

  • @leoray1234 she was supposed to sing like that she was drunk

  • I love it

  • I did this production at my high school and I began dating a fellow actor during rehearsals. I remember when we were alone in the auditorium and we shared our first great kiss, I began to sing this song. It's one of my favorite memories. We aren't dating anymore (naturally) but I will never forget that production.

  • @cmillercaesar123 Nice story. But why do you say 'naturally' when you say you aren't dating anymore?

  • @leoray1234 Well, I did start dating this kid during rehearsals and sometimes in a high school theatre environment, actions and feelings are spontaneous and experiences are almost surreal. So after a play is finished with and you're back in the real world, you're not the same person you were during the show and those feelings you had either vanish or are forced to come to an end.

  • Great!, what a doll...

  • Jean was a babe.

  • i hav to do this, be the drink nun, lol yayyyy haha actually its the funnest bit in the part, i wish i was adelaide :(

  • Im playing Sarah Brown in our Production..But this song has been cut :( Sad times...I was really looking forward to singing this. I will NEVER be able to play her like the Gorgeous Jean Simmons but I'll do my best :)

  • I feel like this scene completely outlines why drinking is fun hahaa

    my favorite scene! <3

  • My favorite scene!

  • is she meant to sound and look drunk?

  • @Gleek227 ;lol yes, shes smashed :)

  • I'm 17 and I LOVE this musical

  • This song turns me on in the most decent way possible---or better put, the least indecent way possible. XD

Seeing the uppity Sarah Brown completely let loose and express her love is just so hilariously unfitting and at the same time...it just makes you genuinely happy. I can't decide whether I like the music (including the tune) or the lyrics better.

  • When I first saw this song, it was in a school performance. Now, in the performance I saw, you could get that she was drunk and in love. This just makes her look UTTERLY INSANE!!! Oh Sarah... classic!

  • Marlon you make me melt...

  • @CursiveType Brando IS still my celeb crush. <3

  • I can't stop looking at Brando's expressions ♥_♥

  • I can't stop smiling after watching this scene. I love it SO much.

  • LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Well sir...if Jean Simmons were draped over me like that, I'd be in danger of splashing my dressing for sure.

  • my school is preforming guys and dolls, and i've been called back for sara. i have a lot to live up to, she's amazing. :D

  • i feel like audrey hepburn would be great performing this song!

  • Sounds like "bye bye birdie"

  • this IS jean. you can tell in her voice, i don't know what you're thinking. hping for Sarah in school play!

  • im doing this for my skool play wish me luck at auditions

  • @ThespazTV my too, im going for sky. i hope i get it.

  • @ThespazTV do you live in Massachusetts?

  • 1:49 - The cutest move ever :D

  • My favorite part:

    1:35

"...From this chemistry lesson I'm learning!"

    "Chemistry?"

    "Yeah, chemistry!"

  • Simmons is fantastic in this part, but I also think all wannabe Sky's should watch Brando. He is tender, protective and amused by her actions. A lot of versions I've seen, Sky acts like he's annoyed or embarrassed by Sarah. Brando plays this perfectly. Love it.

  • Oh baby, this is romance. Why can't things be like this again?

  • i met my fiance bc we were both in the musical she was sarah and i was sky

  • @spong11234 aww!how cute!i only hope you two dont wait 14 years to get married like nathan and adelaide!best of luck!

  • @speedracer1216 lol thank you nah we are getting married in may

  • @spong11234 just making sure lol!

  • "If I were a salad, I know I'd be splashing my dressing..."

The dirtiest line in Golden Age History! Hahaha

  • @Villie1 I lold every time it was sung when I was in crew for this play.

  • EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS IS SO ROMANTIC. THE AESTHETICS ARE FIRST RATE. GOD I MISS THE HOLLYWOOD STUDIO MACHINE

  • No dubbing at all in this movie. And this is Jean, a distinguished actress but never a singer, giving this number her all and putting it over better than any professional vocalist ever could.

  • @PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB Sorry you're wrong, it IS Jean singing :)

  • @tristansladyhawk Really? My theatre teacher said she was the only one not singing. I feel deceived. :[

  • @PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB - " The couple (Brando & Simmons) became good friends, and the following year their rapport was even more apparent in the screen version of the stage musical, Guys and Dolls. Producer Sam Goldwyn, recognising the spark they generated, decided against his original plan to have the pair's singing dubbed, and let them sing for themselves." - Jean Simmons Obituary in The Independent UK online, 26 January 2010

The plan was for both to be dubbed, teacher was partially right.

  • @mjwdmc NO, neither her nor Marlon were dubbed - the voices you hear are their's and their's alone.

  • @tristansladyhawk Brando and Simmons both did their own singing in this movie. Neither of them were dubbed.

  • @giveitsomepizazz - LOL! I know they did!! - Why do some people on here still insist that they didnt? It's a well known fact that although neither are singers the studio decided to run with their own voices - that's what makes their performances so utterly charming. :D

  • @tristansladyhawk Cos folk can't handle the truth!? :P I love them singing, cos they're so perfectly imprefect... there's no way that this performance was done by a professional singer! It's rough and lovely.

  • @tristansladyhawk i think i agree with you that they both really sang on this movie, but the clip of jean simmons singing 'i'll know' sounds different than her singing voice here on 'if i were a bell'...head scratcher...

  • @giveitsomepizazz are you sure about that? i'd like to agree, but if you listen to jean simmons singing 'i'll know' from guys and dolls, it sounds like her voice shifts...

  • @leoray1234 It's one of those well known hollywood stories. They definitely did their own singing.

  • @PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB in fact jean and marlon sung their songs on set without dubbing

  • @PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB that is her singing have you not heard it in the movie?

  • @PHANTOMDEPPSPONGEBOB Yeh ..who the hell told you that?? She was on "Whats My line" in the 50's and spoke about the singing then!

  • they don't make 'em like this anymore.

Gotta love the two of them.

  • he's so hot it's distracting (and it's not just because of the looks, he's constantly reacting to her, and it's all very real and charming), and she manages to make some of the cheesy lyrics (salad splashing my dressing!!) sound completely natural.

  • i find it amazing that this isn't ghost dubbed. she's singing every word live. and they don't make them like marlon anymore.

  • Im auditioning for this show tomorrow in manchester :) the palace theatre are doing it for a two week course in the summer for 11-21 year olds :D

  • i'm singing this in my chorus class :D

  • i got the part of sarah in my school's production of guys and dolls

this is a great video to prepare for that part i've never acted drunk before and i don't really know how

  • This song (and the whole movie) never fails to cheer me up when I've had a bad day. Love the playfulness they both bring to it. Jean & Marlon, you are sorely missed!!

  • R.I.P. Jean Simmons

  • <333333

  • YEAH, CHEMISTRY!!!

  • I love her!

  • This is our musical, im using this video to practice for Sarah.

  • I just got Sarah Brown in my acting groups production of Guys and Dolls, I'm so excited! :)

  • Marlon Brando sure let himself go as he got older. Here he is very handsome and looking fit. Sad we all have to get older.

  • @ 1:48 he looks so nervous... it's adorable!

  • Is it me, or is the sound a little weird on this? I don't remember this song sounding so "chipmunk-like" and I absolutely love Jean Simmons in this role!

  • @gingergirard423 Haha I just went through a Guys and Dolls phase and watched the film maybe...seven or eight times XD It sounds pretty much like this ^^ But I agree completely about Jean Simmons. She just glows here :D

  • Farewell, sweet and lovely Jean

  • R.I.P

  • i really like the choreography here. its very well done.

  • RIP Jean Simmons: one of the screen's greatest - and most underrated - actresses (All the Way Home).

  • Sarah's so cute when she's drunk!! :P

  • she's really sassy brassy here...love it. thanks.

  • why does this clip not play for me??????

  • R.I.P. jean simmons u rocked in this movie!!!

  • I don't mind admitting; I was always a little bit jealous of Jean Simmons... snuggling up to Marlon like this...!

She was a wonderful presence in this movie, and many many others. A beautiful, talented and genteel actress. Rest in Peace Jean.

  • Sad day, lovely woman.

  • Rest in peace, Jean Simmons! I always loved you in this film and many others. You and your adorable presence will be VERY dearly missed. :(

  • i luv this song!!!!!!!! =)

  • i'm trying out to be Sarah in my school play, and im trying so hard XD im such a horrible singer=P at least i think....

Yes, i love Sky's reactions to everything XD!! I fell in love with Sky the first time I saw him=P

  • ohhh thnk god i finally found the rite video!!!! i'm singing dis song for da part of sarah & i wanna b itt. bt this lil cheerleader wanna b itt 2, soo i gtta bring itt if i wanna beat her!!!

  • sounds like u dont care for her tht much...

  • i am singing this for a competition, its really hard!!!!!!

  • I love this song I am singing it for a audition!!! :)

  • fuck. yeah. best musical ever. no seriously.

  • Can anyone tell me what key this is in? This is lower than the usual sheet music.

  • in the stage production, sarah is usually a soprano but jean is an alto (i think) so they transposed it. that's my guess.

  • This scene is great. I love Sky's reactions to everything Sarah throws at him. Especially at 1:20. They are so cute.

  • Yeah, or 2:20

  • eck, her voice annoys me.

  • LOL, correct me if I'm wrong, but- isn't Sarah drunk in this number? Because that's what I was told.

  • Yeah she is...haha!!! :)

  • That explains the way she's acting, haha. I love the youthful, childlike feeling she brings to the lyrics.

  • @xxliew

    LOL,same here :)

  • It's such a pity that this song is often stage-performed with the actress merely appearing to be drunk and disoriented - it doesn't live up to Simmons' fantastically joyful, triumphant delivery. When performed like this, it becomes a very feminist song - a chance for a female character to express her feelings of love in a loud, full-of-life way, as opposed to, say, the quiet meekness of Cosette in Les Miserables.

  • I agree with your comment aside from the critique of Cosette.

  • Not to be too contentious, but what exactly does Cosette have to promote the character? Aside from being merely a walking example of mistreated children, her main function is as a motivation for Fantine, Jean Valjean and Marius. What else is there to her?

  • @Salierethefish drunk women are the shit.

  • @TheLolophile not always

  • @Salierethefish feminist? really? easy, tiger...just because she's belting doesn't make it feminist.

  • @Salierethefish Brilliant observation!

  • @Salierethefish ~ Of course, Simmons was a SUPERB actress!

  • Im gettin ready for auditions for this at my school I plan on singing this for my audition

  • I just finished playing Sarah at my camp

  • Oh man. Marlon Brando looks utterly....hot.

If he wasn't dead (and I was 16 in 1955) he'd totally be my celeb crush.

I love Jean Simmons, as well. She's so beautiful.

  • Jean Simmons is one of the most underated actresses of all time. It is almost a pity that she is so beautiful. Too lovely for her talent, in many regards. She was exceptional as Estella in "Great Expectations" (rent it, if you can). The real pity is that probably none of you have seen her in "Home Before Dark". It is not available on DVD and unquestionably her best performance. Truly exceptional.

  • If you listen to the other songs she sings on this movie her voice is actually quite nice ("I'll know" with Marlon Brando is especially good). In this song her character's drunk, which may account for her singing off key

  • you dont get it.

  • I ♥ This musical and song =D

    Hes one handsome man lol

  • we are doing this play next year at our school. I am expecting to get a principal part (8th grd) and i really want to get mrs. adelaide. although, the directors know me for my innocence and voice similar to sarahs. the audition only allows you to sing happy birthday. how can i show that i can play ms. adelaide??? Help!

  • have you seen this entire movie? well there is the "pet me poppa" scene. I would sing happy birthday with a marilyn monroe twist. sort of pouty, and cute. Being in 8th grade that's even more difficult. hmmm. say the words with the quirky accent, and sort of lost kitten love. hope this helps a little.

  • thanks! i'll definatley try that.

  • BroadwayGal, at the audition, are you singing unaccompanied? If so, you have more freedom to express

Look up Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday to pres. Kennedy in 1961 - she did NOT sound innocent.

For the range needed for Adelaide, you'll have to sing it in a higher key than Miss Monroe did.

  • yes we are singing unnacompanied. thanks so much for the advice!

  • I'm playing sarah in this production, man this song is fun!

  • love this song!

  • I can't believe I can buy the dvd of this masterpiece for just a few quid. I bought quite a few and gave all my friends a copy .

  • im daein this for my skewl show

  • i want to do this musical so badly!

  • im doing it at my school i hope i get the lead

  • im doing it at a camp :)

  • lol me too! Starts tomorrow :)

  • this is my favorite song!

    :) love it!

  • a soloist sang this at my choir consort

  • should i be afraid that i have this as a solo???

    o.0

...I don't know how to act drunk!

  • why should anyone be worried about solos? they are great opportunities to show off your talent!

just relax when u are trying to act drunk, exaggerate your actions and maybe try to act like a little kid seeking attention. Well maybe you should try to get drunk in a Friday night party b4 your show haha

  • This is great!

I love this film, it is one of my faves! I am Sky in my School's production and Sarah is double-cast between 2 fabulous girls. They both bring something different to the character of Sarah and are both great xxx

  • Hii,,,,,Imm Purrinn Onn A Showw Ov Guyss And Dollls And I Am Playinn Dahh Partt Ovv Sarahh,,,,Diss Iss Dahh Bestt Songg,,,,Soo Gladd Ittss Mahh Solo Perfomance xx

  • this is my favorite song in the whole movie?

  • Chemistry??

    Yeah Chemistry!!!

they dont make em like this anymore :)

  • Wow this is great. I'm learning this song (just for my own jazz repertoire). My teacher makes me learn and sing all the lyrics to the songs I learn (which is very good), so this helps a lot!

  • Have you heard the version with Josie de Guzman? She played Sarah in the '92 Broadway revival. Personally, I like her version better.

  • Marlin Brando i great in this!

  • Jean is very funny in this scene !

  • im auditioning to this song today

  • omg, so am i!!!

    what are you auditioning for?

  • We're doing Guys and Dolls for our school play!! :D I dont play Sarah but I still love to sing this song!!

  • Man, we did this musical at my school not too long ago. It is freakin' amazing.

We're doing Oklahoma this year, and in my opinion, it isn't half as good. Different kind of musical, I know, but to me, this style is way more appealing.

  • haha, i play her in our school playy:)

  • Im doing this for your school play !!

    Cnt w8 :D

  • lol. yep, bacardi.

  • good song. doing the musical this year at bradshaw. Trying for the lead.

  • Excessive sentimentality unleashed. :D

  • I love this song. Jean and Brando so great togather. Marlon is gorgeous here.

  • OMG! Marlon Brando is GORGEOUS!!!!!!

  • yep, and he was bisexual too!

  • guys and dolls is going to be my schools musical. i cant wait!

  • God. That little gesture he does at 1:49....Smexi as hell...

  • i know, right?(:

  • uuuummmm... if u say so, i guess... its not if u pause it on 1:49 but i suppose it is a bit in the running movie.

that comment made more sense in my head, believe me! :P

  • They were both so great. He was smoking hot, and she was adorable.

  • ACK so jealous of Jean Simmons. what i wouldn't give to make out with THAT.
