We played this one night at a bar gig late in the set. Much longer solo section of course. People loved it. Doubt they heard the lyrics though. Probably thought it was just some hard blues song.
Of course it's ZZ Top~ Sesame Street was brilliant in their time...my sisters and I loved having this show for our young kids to watch...what was really cool is all the stuff that only the adults would catch!
The pupeteers IMHO had to have at least some knowledge of musical instruments. Love how the bass player really thumps in rhythm, stops correctly when the music stops, and the chords and solo playing by the guitarist look very nice. A less detail-observant crew would just had strummed both instruments without any musical resemblance. This show was simply awesome and educational.
These guys kind of resemble the Country Trio from The Muppet Show, in that they bare some sort of resemblance to their performers. The lead singer looks a bit like Jerry Nelson, in addition to being performed by him. I don't know who puppeteered the other two, but if they had had any lines, I can easily hear Jim Henson doing the second guitarist and Frank Oz doing the drummer.
So this band is called Over the Top. Did ZZ Blues ever do a song called Over the Blues by any chance?
i remember being scared of this for some reason.. especially the giant 'z' that comes at you. and i also remember thinking that the zipper was a 'y'. haha
Oh my god. I remember this song from. . . god knows how far back--before I had any idea who ZZ Top were. How in the world I remember the words, I have no idea. This is great!
Regarding the line "It's time to write a song about Zanzibar," 15 years after this first aired, Jerry did just that.

"It's time to write a song about Zanzibar."
If you're aware of Jerry Nelson's Truro Daydreams album, this line seems a little Hilarious In Hindsight.

@SapphireSphere Yes
Oldiesmann 1 year ago
@SapphireSphere I'm not sure it's a parody of any specific song as much as a parody of the band and their music in general.
@joeywormer - ZZ Top didn't write it. It was written by Christopher Cerf (music) and Sarah Durkee (lyrics)
