To me, it is this program that really makes this team a WOW team. That and their Nagano FD. This was stunning - O could watch them stroke for hours. I love modern ice dance (Virtue/Moir are one of my all time favourites) but this is definitely sublime.
Grishuk and Platov are my favourite! I really enjoy their style, elegancy, creativity, all the very hard job they both do on ice, not mentioned such fast speed that even now nobody can come a little bit close to them. Just watching them you could learn a lot from them: never give up what you can do the best in life, contunie to promote sport at the level beyond your understanding and you can achieve a lot. Some people can critisize you but it just shows some degree of jealousy.

if you want to see perfection check out Torvilla and Dean's Bolero..straight 6.0 across the board..or Torvill and Dean's Barnum..straight 6.0 across the board..never equalled before or since
Fantastic ! I couldn't look at anything else during the entire program, this is an incredible demonstration of passion, technique, energy, sensuality, technical virtuosity ! This is a classic, anyone who use that piece of music has to have this dance in reference.
I'm afraid they're not..you see Grischuk and Platov never achieved perfection unlike Torvill and Dean..and alas nobody outside the Ice Skating world knows who they are..they are unknown..and you can't say the same about Torvill and Dean..a true sign of greatness is being bale to break away from your sport and enter into general public knowledge..Torvill and Dean did that, Grischuk and Platov did not
The true sign of greatness isn't necessarily public recognition. In fact, many great athletes never achieve widespread fame -- in any sport. Any many of the top athletes in niche sports are unknown outside of their sport -- even if they're the greatest at it. Tell me who the best female high jumper in the world is right now without looking it up. You can't. But she's a legend in her sport and has been for years.
Blanka Vlasic-I saw her win the Worlds live in Berlin in the Summer...bet you weren't expecting that answer :-)
I'm sorry but you're contradicting yourself. I'm fully aware that there are many top athletes who are unknown outside of their sport..BUT that just goes to emphasise the phenomen of Torvill and Dean..how did they become household names throughout the world? What was so amazing about them that they achieved this feat? G and P will be remembered only in the world of IS, T&D in both
If you look at my original email I said G&P were better. As in better on the ice. I didn't say anything about people transcending their sport.
T&D probably resonate with more people on a human level -- sure. That doesn't make them better skaters.
If the two had competed G&P would win. Oh wait -- they did, and G&P won the gold.
To me T&D are boring. Bolero -- boring. Others can feel otherwise -- doesn't change my original statement that G&P are better -- and they proved it themselves.
oh you poor love..we all know what happened in 1994 ( and let's remember that was 10 years after Torvill and Dean had initially retired..and i think they beat G&P in the Europeans, did they not?)..T&D were robbed at the Olympics..most people accept that..the sport couldn't have people returning after 10 years to win Gold..it wouldn't have looked very good.
T&D aren't better skaters because G&P are unknown outside of skating..they're just better skaters!
@steps1 I personally pick T&D over G&P but just a few points.
-94 was not really T&D 10 years too old. They were in their mid 30s, most dance teams compete until atleast their early 30s. They stunned most people by turning pro in only their mid 20s.
-G&P started their primes in 1995. They were still developing in 94 as show by their never having beaten a non legendary team like Usova & Zhulin before that season (and might not have that season too had U&Z not had their marital problems).
@steps1 Torvill and Dean were good...... in their time. If they did their Bolero program in competition against this however, they wouldn't even come close. And, the music in this program is incredible, even more trance like than Torvill and Dean's Bolero. Of course skating is only going to keep progressing over the years, so it's understandable that Torvill and Dean's programs wouldn't hold-up against some programs now.
Torvill and Dean weren't good in their time..they were perfection! And if I remember correctly they beat Grischuk and Platov at the Europeans..in THEIR time!! 10 years away from the sport..win the Europeans..Bronze at the Olympics and there are plenty of people who query that decision..Torvill and Dean broke out of the sport into the conscience of the general public..we'll never see their like again!
@steps1 Well what about Bourne and Kraatz? They were pretty amazing too, and they broke out of the typical style of skating in Ice Dancing and came out with more progressive routines.... they even used Trance as one style of music for one of their programs! I loved it! The unfortunate thing with Bourne and Kraatz however, was that they were always so unfairly judged. I don't know if they were the best of their time, but they certianly deserved better than what they got.
@steps1 yeah they did beat g/p at euros in 1994 but that was as much because of the convoluted judging system of the time as it was about what actually happened on the ice. g/p beat them in the free dance at euros but finished 1st overall because they had more second place ordinals that usova/zhulin.

That was truly amazing! Those marks were so well deserved! I think that these two programs "The Feeling Begins" and "Memorial" were their best ever. So much better than the Rock n'Roll that won them Olympic gold back in 1994!
Amazing. Back in 1997, I was jumping up n dowm in front of the tv when they got those sixes. I have searched for this performance everywhere. Thanks so much for posting.
Seeing this again reminds me why I used to love ice dancing so much.

If this was C.O.P, she'd get negative GOE on everything for that disgraceful Dye job!!
Apart from that, this is 90's dance at it's finest! Swoon.

And to say that T&D are better skaters than G&D because more people know about them is absurd.
That's like saying Britney Spears is a better singer than Karen O because more people know about her. All that says is more people have shitty taste.
